To think Veganism has eclipsed Vegetarian?

SnufkinsSpiritAnimal · 04/09/2024 20:45

With all respect to actual vegans.

I googled how to stay healthy when going vegetarian, as I am considering the switch. My attached image shows the first bunch of replies.
I have noticed this with veggie recipes, all presume that I want it to be vegan.
If I search for food on supermarket sites I often get mostly vegan results.

This is great for vegans but not for me, as the addition of dairy products in my own diet would make for some very different foods and recipes.
It is as if search engines simply rearrange my words into vegan.

All of the health advice presumes I am vegan so only chatters on about B vitamins that I need to replace as I give up dairy Confused
Surely it isn't just me who is noticing this.
Are there any decent vegetarian sources of info now?

I have tried a few vegan things from the supermarket , they seem so much drier . I might eat vegetarian but avoid things that are vegan.

Goballistic · 04/09/2024 21:14

Yes restaurants do it too, they will have vegan options but not veggie it's annoying, I like cheese

Adapting vegan to veggie is much easier than the other way around.
It’s not that hard to say “vegan burger please but with dairy cheese”
It’s easier than saying “is the veggie burger vegan? Do the bun, patty or condiments contain any milk or eggs? Please can you go and make the chef check?”

macaroniandcheeze · 04/09/2024 21:18

OP, you should probably check out the Vegetarian Society website

It's not always as simple as that.

McDonald's, for example, refuse to add non vegan cheese to the mcplant burger - the theory is that's in case someone complains that they got dairy in what is advertised as a vegan product.

They could get round this by having a cheeseburger for sale that you could modify to a mcplant patty, but I don't think they'll do that.

As a veggie in a family of veggies, we are finding it very frustrating.
I am a vegetarian.. ( as it happens I don't have milk or cream as lactose intolerant but I can and do eat hard cheeses) and I do NOT only want vegan recipes, or vegan offerings in restaurants.

A lot of plant based stuff is highly processed and frankly crap, and vegan cheese is grim.

Let me be a vegetarian in peace Grin

Dragonfly909 · 04/09/2024 21:29

Just to offer the alternative perspective, I have been vegetarian since the late 90s and remember have very limited food choices in some places, often having to just have a salad or plate of chips. So I appreciate that menus have a lot more veggie/vegan choices now and don't mind a lack of cheese (I eat enough at home!). Also labelling used to not really be a thing, just had to read the ingredients list (as the type of vegetarian who avoids gelatine, rennet etc, not everyone does). Very happy that most things are labelled vegetarian or vegan now, or even 'not suitable for vegetarians'!
However still a lot of places offering a 'veggie' option that contains parmasan or pesto 🤦‍♀️

Tiredofallthis101 · 04/09/2024 21:35

Yes and it is seriously annoying. I don't want some cruddy sun dried tomatoes tart with horrible dry pastry. Milk, eggs, and butter are used in Michelin Star restaurants for a reason. Of course top chefs can find ways around those things to make delicious vegan things but your average pub can't and shouldn't try. Agree with a pp that I don't want highly processed vegan junk either - I've no problem with vegan food done right with lots of fresh vegetables, lentils, seeds etc. But what's on offer in most places - no.

Completely agree. I have been a veggie since a very young child and get so annoyed when veggie options are replaced with vegan. I have seen many veggie options be replaced this way. Also when vegetable and bean burgers are replaced by quorn burgers. No thanks!

Woollypullover · 04/09/2024 21:37

I think it's a good thing.

I wish I would still be alive when vegan eclipses meat eating too.

AceOfCups · 04/09/2024 21:40

I was just ranting about this to my friend the other day when we were looking for somewhere to eat but all the menus we looked at had a vegan option but not a vegetarian option.

i don’t want to eat fake cheese or “vegan bacon”. I just want nice vegetarian recipes made with eggs and butter and real cheese

Tharshe · 04/09/2024 21:43

Completely agree. I've been veggie for over 40 years and just as pubs and cafes were getting a little bit better and more adventurous with veggie food, they've now swapped the veggie choice to vegan. My biggest gripe is often there's no thought to nutrition at all and it's basically a side dish containing just veg and no protein. It really frustrates me because both veggie and vegan food is fantastic, exciting and delicious, but businesses just can't be arsed to invest a little bit of time or thought into their menu

Totally agree, it's so much better now. It used to be the only veggie option in a fancy place would be mushroom risotto if you were lucky, chips if not, although we went to France last year and I think all I ate was still salad and chips as still no options. When I was at uni there I had a veggie friend who used to buy the sandwich jambon fromage and just bin the jambon as there was nothing else for her to eat.
I'm lactose intolerant so I don't eat cheese but I don't struggle too much with the processed stuff - there are still plenty of vegetables to eat and they make so much more appearances on menus than before. Plus the chef is more likely to say what you can have now and not just treat you like you are weird and if you have nothing to eat it's your own stupid fault.

Sheeparelooseagain · 04/09/2024 21:46

We often buy vegan food because Ds is milk intolerant.

Livinginaclock · 04/09/2024 21:46

Yes, and it's annoying, I also hate the fake meat that seems to be everywhere.
I just want vegetables/something made from vegetables and possibly with cheese.

theeyeofdoe · 04/09/2024 21:47

You simply cannot get some of the nutrients t’s you need from a vegan diet. Little b12, iron is absorbed less less from plant sources. Calcium is difficult to get in sufficient quantities and most of the substitutes are UPF.

It will go full circle…

Utterly untrue.

bakewellbride · 04/09/2024 21:53

@theeyeofdoe that's just not true. I've been vegan for nearly a year now and blood tests confirm my iron levels are high (higher than when I was a vegetarian funnily enough). There have been experiments where they've done blood tests on people before going vegan and after and their nutrient levels are the exact same after as back when they ate meat ('veganise me').

If you don't like veganism then that's absolutely fair enough and your right but please don't spread lies about it. It's perfectly possible to get all the nutrients needed as confirmed by the world health organisation.

wadeinthewater · 04/09/2024 21:53

Yanbu. I was considered weird in primary school for not eating meat, the vegans have absolutely surpassed me now!
Never thought I'd see the day where I'd have to ask for a veggie burger with real cheese instead of vegan cheese but here we are.

No, it really isn't a good thing.

It is rude and shows an incredible lack of empathy towards those of us, who for various reasons, often health reasons, can not and do not wish to go vegan.
You are not my doctor.

It does nothing for the vegan cause to treat vegetarians and pescatarians in this school-marmish way.

Respect everyones choice with humility, that is my own method. I would prefer we cleaned up our ethics towards animals (vastly improved treatment and care) and farming rather than talk down to meat eaters for the rest of eternity.

I'm really confused by what your problem is op. Out of curiosity I googled how to be healthy as a vegetarian and this was what came up. All to do with vegetarianism and not much veganism as you can see in the screen shot.

Then there's the vegetarian society and probably all sorts of different books on the subject.

Before becoming vegan I was a vegetarian for many, many years and never had any trouble finding stuff out about it or anything. I'm a bit confused tbh.

80smonster · 04/09/2024 21:59

Vegetarianism has been cancelled by veganism. Restaurants can’t be bothered to cater for both, so vegan options are offered to vegetarians. Very upsetting.

MagentaRavioli · 04/09/2024 21:59

I know what you mean OP - I have been veggie for years and suddenly everything seems to be labelled vegan or not vegan. It annoys me when the only veggie option in a restaurant is vegan and ultra processed.

Blackcats7 · 04/09/2024 22:00

Veganism was made fashionable in a way vegetarianism never was so gets far more attention.
I am another vegetarian sick to the back teeth of only vegan options.

My point still stands, that simple searches, practically anywhere now, presume vegetarians don't eat dairy.
Recipes are a fucking mess.

And another scourge currently online is observing kindly vegetarians and people cutting down meat getting hammered by rude, sanctimonious vegans. They take over every single damn discussion about food.

I thoroughly admire the choice and practice, just not the attitude.
