To think Veganism has eclipsed Vegetarian?

SnufkinsSpiritAnimal · 04/09/2024 20:45

With all respect to actual vegans.

I googled how to stay healthy when going vegetarian, as I am considering the switch. My attached image shows the first bunch of replies.
I have noticed this with veggie recipes, all presume that I want it to be vegan.
If I search for food on supermarket sites I often get mostly vegan results.

This is great for vegans but not for me, as the addition of dairy products in my own diet would make for some very different foods and recipes.
It is as if search engines simply rearrange my words into vegan.

All of the health advice presumes I am vegan so only chatters on about B vitamins that I need to replace as I give up dairy Confused
Surely it isn't just me who is noticing this.
Are there any decent vegetarian sources of info now?

To think Veganism has eclipsed Vegetarian?

I agree. Because every vegan dish is technically vegetarian many restaurants and pubs are lazy when it comes to catering for non-meat eaters.

bakewellbride · 04/09/2024 22:03

@SnufkinsSpiritAnimal but surely my screenshot proves that it is in fact quite easy to Google search vegetarianism? It's so easy to find out so much on the subject, I don't understand. It took me 2 seconds.

Auburngal · 04/09/2024 22:03

Think vegan is less popular than it was. As a code checker - going through foods and, frequently reduce vegan foods such as burgers, pastry (though that is also gluten free), ready meals. See these vegan products in reduced sections in other supermarkets as well.

Sheeparelooseagain · 04/09/2024 21:46

We often buy vegan food because Ds is milk intolerant.

Be careful with 'plant based'. It can contain dairy.

Auburngal · 04/09/2024 22:09

There is an Italian restaurant where I live and they will accommodate vegetarians, vegans and GF as options for using of vegan cheese and GF pizza bases and pasta.

You can order a meat pizza with vegan cheese for example as could be lactose intolerant

henlake7 · 04/09/2024 22:10

I think there was a big swing towards veganism for trendy reasons in recent years and loads of companies jumped on the bandwagon with processed crap.
Now the trend has died down and the products aren't selling (probably because most long standing vegans don't really eat a lot of processed foods!).

Not sure what the OPs problem is though. I just Googled vegetarianism and that was all that came up....no mention of vegans.
As to why it's more commonly mentioned in restaurants, food labels, etc it's probably because it's harder to tell if things are vegan as they seem to put milk powder in everything!

I think it's a good thing.

I wish I would still be alive when vegan eclipses meat eating too.

Well for me where I might eat vegetarian I will now eat meat .. so you are driving people in the opposite direction too

JWhipple · 04/09/2024 22:18

NeverEnoughPants · 04/09/2024 21:21

It's not always as simple as that.

McDonald's, for example, refuse to add non vegan cheese to the mcplant burger - the theory is that's in case someone complains that they got dairy in what is advertised as a vegan product.

They could get round this by having a cheeseburger for sale that you could modify to a mcplant patty, but I don't think they'll do that.

That's one example, from a huge worldwide company which probably has to have such ridiculous things in place to prevent lawsuits. I'm struggling to think of anywhere else that would refuse to add dairy cheese to a vegan burger.

Most places I got to eat at, over half of the non-meat options are vegetarian with no option of making them vegan, the rest are vegan.

Honestly, surely having more non-meat options is better for vegetarians, and more importantly, for the animals.

Anxioustealady · 04/09/2024 22:18

Yes, I long for the days of a vegetarian lasagne and garlic bread in pubs. That sounds sarcastic but it's not lol. I also really miss vegetable or bean burgers, now it's just beyond meat crap.

Are you a vegan, vegetarian or meat eater?

Yep. same for me. I was vegetarian for 20 years and then started having chicken occasionally, but would still opt for vegetarian over chicken when eating out.
I know find myself ordering chicken dishes more regularly as vegetarian dishes are becoming vegan and are full of processed crap.
We regularly frequent a pub that did a gorgeous vegetarian risotto that has now become vegan and is horrible.
I so rarely eat chicken at home I would happily go back to being a vegetarian but with so few tasty vegetarian options available now I’m eating more chicken that I really want to.

I eat vegan probably twice a week at home, made with fresh vegetables, pulses, I despise fake meat and dairy products, and would never order anything made with meat or dairy substitutes.

Auburngal · 04/09/2024 22:34

Don’t start on Veganuary. We get more vegan stuff in and more stuff is reduced.

If people want to try a different diet then they should not need a campaign to do it.

I don’t do Veganuary or Dry January as it’s my birthday then.

I do have meat free days - not planned but it’s just fancy something.

theeyeofdoe · 04/09/2024 22:37

Woollypullover · 04/09/2024 21:52

Utterly untrue.

It's not though. You're completely deluding yourself that it is.

Just google the nutrient + sources + absorption + abstract and you'll see lots of peer reviewed data.

Oh and you can also look at the ingredient list for vegan cheese/fish fingers/etc

GreatMistakes · 04/09/2024 22:41

What adaptations do you need? Vegan recipes mostly use alternative butters and egg replacers. Just swap the egg replacer for egg, non dairy milk for dairy or buy a vegetarian cookbook. I always adapt meat and traditional baking recipes to be vegan, it's very easy now.

Why are you fine with adapting meat recipes to be veggie but cross about adapting vegan ones to be veggie? Both are adaptations.

GreatMistakes · 04/09/2024 22:44

SnufkinsSpiritAnimal · 04/09/2024 22:01

My point still stands, that simple searches, practically anywhere now, presume vegetarians don't eat dairy.
Recipes are a fucking mess.

And another scourge currently online is observing kindly vegetarians and people cutting down meat getting hammered by rude, sanctimonious vegans. They take over every single damn discussion about food.

I thoroughly admire the choice and practice, just not the attitude.

Oh, I see. This is a thinly disguised vegan bashing thread. Nice.

GreatMistakes · 04/09/2024 22:46

bakewellbride · 04/09/2024 21:57

I'm really confused by what your problem is op. Out of curiosity I googled how to be healthy as a vegetarian and this was what came up. All to do with vegetarianism and not much veganism as you can see in the screen shot.

Then there's the vegetarian society and probably all sorts of different books on the subject.

Before becoming vegan I was a vegetarian for many, many years and never had any trouble finding stuff out about it or anything. I'm a bit confused tbh.

OP has started a vegan bashing thread. See how op cleverly cropped her image to omit that the search was actually for vegan but is pretending it ws for vegetarian. Clever 👏

Pleiades2020 · 04/09/2024 22:51

I typed exactly the same into Google and only got vegetarian results. Anyway there aren't many health concerns with going veggie, the main one would probably be certain vitamins.and minerals.

IchWill · 04/09/2024 22:59

OP, why are you getting so arsey in your replies? You literally posted a question on AIBU and encouraged replies, they won't all match your opinion.

Personally, I'm all in favour of more vegan choices, it caters for omnis, pescis, veggies, vegans and those with dairy and egg allergies. Obviously, a HUGE demographic.

I went veggie in 1992 and I remember how hard it was to get food from supermarkets and restaurants were even worse.

Seven years ago, I had my eyes opened (by vegans) into the horrors of the dairy and egg industry and I became vegan.

I'm incredibly grateful that veganism has become more mainstream and I hope it leads to more people reducing their animal consumption.

Abcdefg22220 · 04/09/2024 23:05

Completely agree op. It is infuriating.

Sunnysundayicecream · 04/09/2024 23:06

I've been veggie for 30 years. I went out for a meal the other day and ordered a pizza. It came with vegan cheese, it was the saddest pizza I've ever had, bring back real cheese for veggie 🧀!

Gothamcity · 04/09/2024 23:08

Yep, it's so annoying especially when eating out most places. It used to be hard years ago to get many veggie options, but gradullay got to a point where there was usually a really good selection on most menus, but now most places the veggie stuff is now non existent and it's all vegan instead. One of my kids is veggie, and we cook mostly vegetarian as I'm not cooking separate meals, but when we go out as a treat, and we all get to have what we want, I always feel bad for dd, as her options are so limited. It's literally tomato pasta or if she's lucky, pizza. Sometimes she doesn't even get a choice and just has to have the only vegetarian option available, where as 5 years ago there was much more veggie options, that didn't involve a bloody "vegan spiced chickpea burger" that most 10 year olds wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

Mikunia · 04/09/2024 23:08

Tharshe · 04/09/2024 21:43

Completely agree. I've been veggie for over 40 years and just as pubs and cafes were getting a little bit better and more adventurous with veggie food, they've now swapped the veggie choice to vegan. My biggest gripe is often there's no thought to nutrition at all and it's basically a side dish containing just veg and no protein. It really frustrates me because both veggie and vegan food is fantastic, exciting and delicious, but businesses just can't be arsed to invest a little bit of time or thought into their menu

This frustrates me as a vegan too. I want protein and I don't want a bloody vegan burger!

I would like to see 2-3 options each for veggies and vegans in each section of the menu: starters, mains, sides, desserts.

There are always so many Omni versions they could easily replace a few with veggie and vegan options with protein in.

Not a chance. You eat what you please. And we will too.
