To not want blasphemy laws in the UK?

https://www.yourlocalguardian.co.uk/news/24516089.sutton-man-61-chanted-who-f-allah-jailed/

Thug sentenced for violent disorder and threatening police, all good.

But the chanting? Maybe I’ve got the wrong end of the stick but I thought criticising religion, even crudely, is permitted in the UK and not a crime so long as it doesn’t stray into harassment or incitement of another crime.

Labour are allegedly considering new legislation around the extent to which people can criticise Islam.

AIBU to think people should have the right to criticise religion (even crudely), and that we should not revert to having blasphemy laws in the UK? I apply this to all religions, including my own, and not just Islam.

Sutton man, 61, who chanted ‘who the f*** is Allah’ is jailed for 18 months

David Spring made threatening gestures at police and chanted “who the f*** is Allah” during large-scale disorder in Whitehall.

So a t wo tier law ! Heaven forbid you criticise Islam but say what you like about Christianity and all is well. Screwed up Government. No wonder Starmer doesn't have to pay for his own glasses.

You're making stuff up in your head and then getting angry about it. That's not healthy.

AnywhereAnyoneAnyTime · 04/09/2024 17:59

This thread is Islamophobic in itself.

That screenshot doesn't say anything about Spring chanting anything.
It talks about someone else called Notley who got 20 months for violent disorder...and a separate £100 fine for islamophobic chanting

I think the issue is your comprehension skills, not anything that Labour are doing!

Oooh aren’t you a lovely person..not.
I didn’t say anything about Labour my lovely. You need to look at your own skills before you judge others 👍

Thank you.

That still makes no reference to Mr Spring calling the police officer a "cunt", neither does it reference his comments about Allah. Neither does it say these were aggravating factors which increased his sentencing.

So when you said "it says this on the CPS website", and the OP is claiming Mr Spring was jailed because of his comments, it doesn't really stand up does it.

Still stands that Mr Spring was jailed for violent disorder. Not Islamophobia but I think the OP was saying that if someone had shouted ‘who TF is Jesus’ it possibly would not have attracted the same custodial sentence

"Labour are allegedly considering new legislation around the extent to which people can criticise Islam."

Just Islam? Seriously?

I think everything, everyone and anything should be open to considered criticism. So I wouldn't want curbs like that.
There are already plenty of laws for dealing with obnoxious pricks.

It's always Islam.

This. It wouldn’t be considered aggravating in any way. Why not?

I can’t answer the poll because I actually think you’re being disingenuous rather than unreasonable.

This. Dogwhistle Islamophobia which has already been responded to by the RW doggies.

All of it. The disingenuous "oh, I'm so concerned about Islam getting special treatment" line.
It's the twin to " immigrants are first in the housing queue "

You are wasting your energy on this site OP.
I understand where you are coming from but you will only be wasting your breath and getting insulted for your views. Ironic really but that’s life at the moment.
Perfectly ok to called a middle aged woman a Karen but heaven forbid you call a copper a cunt 🤷‍♀️ Cuts just the same for the recipient of the slur

RainintheDesert · 04/09/2024 18:50

England & Wales repealed their blasphemy laws in 2008. But this buzzword, "hate crime" came in and unfortunately in some circles that basically replaced them.

Labour either want to bring blasphemy laws back for ALL religions or not at all. No singling out one religion over all others. There's no religious hierarchy, or at least there shouldn't be. I can't see how these ideas correlate with the Equality Act 2010, to be honest.

Jjiillkkf · 04/09/2024 18:51

Whatever you do don't call them a c* and then comfort them

Disingenuous because OP has a viewpoint that doesn’t match yours?
OP can have whatever view they want. Doesn’t make it inherently racist/Islamophobic/hate speech.
That’s the whole point of free speech and it’s being eroded.
Posters on this site feel it’s their right to call others names but it’s not all equal is it?

Around 80% of thread viewers are broadly in agreement with me, so I think there’s a silent majority on here. The problem is people are scared to stand up for their beliefs - whereas clearly others aren’t. It’s not shameful to force a teacher into hiding over querying religious doctrine and there are no repercussions over that (have there been prosecutions?), but suggesting Islam should be subject to the same scrutiny and freedom of speech as any other religion is ‘far right’.

🤷‍♀️

This isn't about the comments the man made about Allah though. The OP has used this man's disgraceful comments to pretend that they're the reason he's in trouble with the police, rather than the actual facts which are he's in trouble for violent disorder, not for mentioning Allah.

The whole original post is completely disingenuous but I guess it got OP the discussion she wanted. It would just have made a lot more sense to share an article that's actually about these supposed blasphemy laws rather than sharing an article about something completely different in an attempt to stir up fear among those who can't be bothered to do any fact-checking but who are very willing to believe anything as long as it's negative about Islam.

The riots started out as a protest. A few knob heads caused issues.
Whether you’re saying Allah or a policeman is a cunt doesn’t deserve a custodial sentence.
Personally I think all religions are bollocks and some police are cunts. Should I be imprisoned for saying this?
OP quoted a newspaper article. If you believe it isn’t factual then you are free to take it with a pinch of salt.
Also, a poster has already corrected the OP about blasphemy law so that’s a moot point now.

But his comments aren't the reason for his custodial sentence, that's the whole point! It's because of violent disorder which he already pleaded guilty to.

OP should have gone to greater lengths to understand the article before creating a fear-mongering thread about it. She made the article out to be about something it isn't just to suit her own narrative. It's not ok.

So what was he actually sent down for? What was the ‘violent disorder’ if it was more than his choice of vocabulary?

You chose the wrong article to make that point. The article has nothing to do with

You are allowed a problem with Islam. It's possible to argue aspects of Islam without being completely dismissive of the whole religion though. You should try to make intelligent points about it rather than general statements.

Anyway, thanks for in a roundabout way finally confirming that your original post was completely disingenuous and it's actually Islam as a whole you take issue with.
