Aibu for being frustrated with a colleague

So, we had lunch delivered yesterday and it’s a rare treat for us at work to get this. It was sushi and wraps and cakes.

A colleague of mine, who is somewhat greedy I feel. Took one of the boxes that things were delivered in and says to me “I’m going to take some of this home for tea” she took 12 wraps so 6 full ones, 10 sushi and a few cakes.

I ended up telling my team leader but didn’t want to be horrible about it but it was sort of greedy in my opinion to take that much when it was supposed to be for our spread today. I would understand if it was a case of food poverty or something, but the issue is she goes for regular dinners that are pricey and gets regular take outs.

AIBU for being annoyed here.

You told your team leader? What an immature, spiteful thing to do.

graceinspace999 · 07/09/2024 10:29

Doesn’t everyone share leftovers rather than waste them?

Telling tales on her brought shame on you OP

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 07/09/2024 10:32

She took the leftovers - after everyone had gone?

If it see what the problem is?

MountainChalet · 07/09/2024 10:36

This doesn't make any sense.
If it was leftovers, don't see the problem. You can't keep sushi for the next day.

SoTired12 · 07/09/2024 10:36

Reported for taking home leftovers 😭 good luck in the office with that one OP

PrincessScarlett · 07/09/2024 10:38

So was it leftovers then? Not a problem at all taking leftovers.

hepsitemiz · 07/09/2024 10:51

YABU, OP.

She prevented food waste. By the sounds of your OP and updates, the food would have been binned.

Good on your colleague, I say.

SummerFade · 07/09/2024 10:57

So basically took the leftovers?
Nothing wrong with that and better than throwing it in the bin.

You sound like you’ve got issues around food calling someone greedy. That’s a very judgmental and unpleasant trait.

ranchdressing · 07/09/2024 11:10

If she did this after lunch at the end of the work day then this is totally fair game. It'll only get binned otherwise - who wants day old sushi and wraps??

ranchdressing · 07/09/2024 11:11

Our office manager practically begs us to take leftover home food when its ordered in for meetings. This is quite common I think.

Hankunamatata · 07/09/2024 11:12

She took left overs. Wise up op

Monkeysatonthewall · 07/09/2024 11:20

😮😮 wow...

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 07/09/2024 11:45

Was it left overs at the end of the week so wouldn’t be good to eat by Monday anyway? If so then fair dos, as preventing waste. Maybe you should have all shared it out to prevent waste.

ForOliveShaker · 03/09/2024 12:15

I told my team leader in the morning bc she left and was packing the box when everyone has gone home and didn’t realise I was still there.

She was packing the box when everyone had gone home? Well done to her for not wasting food. The wraps would not have been nice over a day old.

NonsuchCastle · 07/09/2024 10:24

Because effectively stealing before anyone had actual eaten was perfectly acceptable?

If it was left over after everyone had eaten then it's fine for someone to take it imo.

Zombie thread, no 3 this morning. Very weird.

It isn't a Zombie thread - the OP started it on 03/09/2024.

Bodeganights · 07/09/2024 08:53

My bad, read the date wrong.

Do you need your eyesight checked @Bodeganights? This is the second thread I've read where you've called "ZOMBIE", for something that is 3 or 4 days old!

The way you wrote this, they were leftovers and you're sticking your beak in when colleague is taking food which would otherwise have gone to waste, presumably.

YABU.

I would love to know what the team leader said to you. We'll never know what she thought but didn't vocalise.

In future it might be a good idea for the team leader to say people are welcome to take things home that are leftovers from the lunch, just to be clear. A lot of people won't bother but it is good if someone does use it, better than wasting.

Monkeysatonthewall · 07/09/2024 12:26

After reading the original post I thought the colleague basically came in and packed lots of stuff while people were finishing to eat.

Now it sounds like she took stuff that would've gone off by Monday had she not taken it home.

For some reason, some OPs like to drip feed.

ManchesterLu · 07/09/2024 12:32

It's fair game if people are boxing up leftovers, as it's better than food going to waste, but only if it's finished with by the people it was actually meant for, and even then, everyone still left in the office should be given a fair share, if they want it.

burnoutbabe · 07/09/2024 12:33

Wouldn't the key thing here be

Was the food just left out after lunch? ie no one had cleared it away already - its very rude to just leave it for the cleaners to deal with. At our place one would either encourage people to take stuff home OR say "lets wrap this up for storage to eat tomorrow lunchtime" - ie get some new cling film or an air tight box.

if you can't keep it safe overnight, then its binned after ensuring no one wants to take it home.

UserNameOfShame · 07/09/2024 12:33

Well, thanks for coming back and clearing that up for us OP 🙄

Clear as mud.

what was going to happen to the left overs ?

LookItsMeAgain · 07/09/2024 12:50

@ForOliveShaker - when during the day did your colleague take the food?

Was it shortly after it was delivered (before anyone else had an opportunity to select from the offerings)?
Was it at lunchtime as others were selecting and they were taking a box full for their dinner at that point leaving less for others to select from?
Was it after lunchtime, when what was left would be considered 'left overs' and might possibly have either gone in the bin or back in the fridge for the day after??

Timing of when this happened is actually important to whether you were the CF here or your colleague was.
