Aibu for being frustrated with a colleague

So, we had lunch delivered yesterday and it’s a rare treat for us at work to get this. It was sushi and wraps and cakes.

A colleague of mine, who is somewhat greedy I feel. Took one of the boxes that things were delivered in and says to me “I’m going to take some of this home for tea” she took 12 wraps so 6 full ones, 10 sushi and a few cakes.

I ended up telling my team leader but didn’t want to be horrible about it but it was sort of greedy in my opinion to take that much when it was supposed to be for our spread today. I would understand if it was a case of food poverty or something, but the issue is she goes for regular dinners that are pricey and gets regular take outs.

AIBU for being annoyed here.

Zombie thread, no 3 this morning. Very weird.

Only just a zombie, it’s nearly as fresh as the five day old sushi!

It was started 4 days ago. How is that s zombie?

Whaleandsnail6 · 07/09/2024 08:45

Definitely needs more clarity...

We often have buffets at work. Nice bread, sandwich fillers, cakes and biscuits ect. These can last us 2-3 days stored in the fridge and noone would even take home unless it was coming to the weekend or couldnt be saved for next day. If thats the case, she's greedy and cheeky...that food was for everyone at work

If everyone had had their fill for the day and it would have been destined for the bin or couldnt safely save then nothing wrong with taking home for tea...save it going to waste

TokyoSushi · 07/09/2024 08:51

I suspect the OP isn't coming back...

If she was taking the stuff after everybody had gone home, then that would seem that they're leftovers, and by everybody going home the indication was that they didn't want any... so therefore fine.

Surely a buffet wouldn't be out the night before for the next day, that would be really weird.

TokyoSushi · 07/09/2024 08:52

If they'd gone back in the fridge to be used again, then CF, but if just out and waiting for the bin, then fair game.

My bad, read the date wrong.

EI12 · 07/09/2024 08:54

It is because of people like her that we don't have a high trust society anymore.

I told my team leader in the morning bc she left and was packing the box when everyone has gone home and didn’t realise I was still there.

I think this was important info to have included in your original post… if it was the end of the day and food was left over I don’t think it’s a big issue for her to have taken leftovers? Better they get eaten than wasted surely? I can’t imagine there would be many takers clamouring for 2 day old sushi the following lunchtime 🤢

Rosscameasdoody · 07/09/2024 09:21

SallyWD · 03/09/2024 12:17

That's bad! We only ever rate food home if there are leftovers that will be binned. Very cheeky.

From what OP said upthread about everyone having left, l suspect it was exactly that.

LBFseBrom · 07/09/2024 09:28

If it was leftovers I don't see a problem, it would only go to waste otherwise. You could have spoken to the woman about it, op, rather than go to your team leader, said something like, "Others may want some so please don't take too much". We don't know how big the box was, there could have been a lot left over for people to share. and, let's face it, some will not have wanted to bother.

If she was doing it before the lunch that would be very unfair of her but I still consider speaking to her personally to be preferable to reporting her, which amounts to 'grassing'; not a very friendly thing to do to a colleague unless they are bullying or something similar. After all, nobody died.

Always be courteously and discreetly straightforward with colleagues.

She didn't realise you were still there? That makes you even more of a sneaky grass. I wouldn't like to work with you.

Dpresst · 07/09/2024 09:36

YANBU it’s rude, grabby and cringe!

ViciousCurrentBun · 07/09/2024 09:36

We had loads of buffets at work, huge dept and multiple meetings , conferences and visitors. My mate and I would ring each other if we knew one was over in case there were leftovers. It was in house catering and due to health and safety was officially not allowed to be kept overnight.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/09/2024 09:38

If it was supposed to be for your lunch the day after, why on earth didn’t anyone say anything? I’m assuming there was a fridge to keep it all in - personally I wouldn’t want sushi that had been left unrefrigerated overnight.

ClairDeLaLune · 07/09/2024 09:46

So it was leftovers left out on a desk to go off overnight? That’s good she took it so it wouldn’t go to waste, especially if she tough everyone had gone home.

You’re a grass OP!

AhBiscuits · 07/09/2024 09:47

We're never going to find out if it was leftovers are we 😞

I am going to hazard a wild guess that the only leftover sushi was in @ForOliveShaker 's imagination.

But as school term has started now hopefully they are back in lessons and not making up rubbish on MN.

If you ARE still here then next time @ForOliveShaker get your "facts" right - in the first post she told you she was taking it home as she was packing it up, in your last post you said she "didn't realise" you were still there

Your post is really confusing, this makes it sound as though your colleague took home leftovers after everyone had gone home. If so, she’s definitely not a CF. She’s only cheeky if she had first dibs and there wasn’t enough to go round.

CasaBianca · 07/09/2024 09:59

I can’t believe you have reported a colleague for taking leftovers after people have left the office - clearly not intending on taking these themselves.
What do you think should have happen with the food remaining?

reluctantbrit · 07/09/2024 10:03

We get lunch every Thursday and it's always the case that leftovers are free to be taken home. During the last couple of months we always had sandwiches/wraps and they don't really last well into the next day so they would be binned.

I often take a bit of cake or biscuits home for DD to enjoy as well - at the end of the day when it's clear that they are left behind, not before everyone else had their chance to eat them obviously.

Gettingbysomehow · 07/09/2024 10:04

She's got a damned nerve. I'd have said there are other people here you know.
This is the problem with work, you are forced to work with people you wouldn't ever want to be with outside work.

TooTired2024 · 07/09/2024 10:13

Timing's everything! If she was packing it up at the end of the day, I'd be fine with it, esp sushi as it doesn't last well. Was anyone else going to take it that day? No? Then she'd be welcome to it. I'd have more problems with the cakes, as they'd still be OK for the next day, but if everyone had had some then I'd find it difficult to get het up about it tbh

It sounds like she was hoovering the leftovers up after everyone had finished and left, in which case, she's just preventing waste.

Did YOU pack a doggy bag for later? Are you just narked you didn't have the same idea?
