Aibu for being frustrated with a colleague

So, we had lunch delivered yesterday and it’s a rare treat for us at work to get this. It was sushi and wraps and cakes.

A colleague of mine, who is somewhat greedy I feel. Took one of the boxes that things were delivered in and says to me “I’m going to take some of this home for tea” she took 12 wraps so 6 full ones, 10 sushi and a few cakes.

I ended up telling my team leader but didn’t want to be horrible about it but it was sort of greedy in my opinion to take that much when it was supposed to be for our spread today. I would understand if it was a case of food poverty or something, but the issue is she goes for regular dinners that are pricey and gets regular take outs.

AIBU for being annoyed here.

Surely leftovers are fair game and would have otherwise have been binned?

She's a bit of a CF if she took it before everyone in the office had their lunch, but if she took it at the end of the day (as it seems) then I don't see the problem tbh.

I wouldn't do it personally, because left over cakes, wraps and sushi that had been out since lunchtime wouldn't be appealing to me, but if she's happy to eat it, then surely it's better than it going to waste?

cosyleafcafe · 03/09/2024 12:56

MartinCrieffsLemon · 03/09/2024 12:53

But it sounds like everyone had gone home

So it was left to presumably just go in the bin when the cleaners came in?

Well I think @ForOliveShaker needs to clarify whether it would have gone in the bin if this person didn't take it.

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 03/09/2024 12:56

Re your suggestion of a spread today... Were you planning to refrigerate the leftovers? I'm not sure I'd touch a two-day old wrap. Certainly wouldn't eat the sushi. The cakes if properly stored should have been alright, she shouldn't have taken those home if the plan was to eat those today.

ActualChips · 03/09/2024 12:58

OP wrote that the leftovers were meant for a spread today.@cosyleafcafe @mrsm43s

Two days old sushi, soggy wraps and stale cake.

This is why we need clarification on the timeline

Was it:

  1. Food delivered last night for today? (Gross if it was sitting out all night as it sounds)
  2. Food delivered yesterday and eaten yesterday and then just left on the side to be binned by the cleaners?
  3. Food delivered yesterday and consumed yesterday but OP was expecting leftovers to be used again today after they'd been left on the side? (Gross again)
  4. Food delivered yesterday for yesterday that colleague boxed up whilst everyone was out but BEFORE they ate?
GaryLurcher19 · 03/09/2024 16:21

We all need OP to give us that timeline! We can't know how cheeky the CF is without the details. 😄

Scandie · 07/09/2024 07:41

Does she go out though? Or is it smth she says?
Was there enough for all to have something there?
I AM thinking food poverty - and stories of dinners out, takeout etc masking and creating a narrative of being okay?
Did YOU have what you needed to eat?
you said everyone else had gone so I presume so, in which case: who cares? She may have had her reasons. She may just be a CF. But so what if it’s the latter?
I’d rather she WAS a CF and NOT potentially masking a sad situation.

Civilservant · 07/09/2024 07:45

YABU for unclear information!

I told my team leader in the morning bc she left and was packing the box when everyone has gone home and didn’t realise I was still there.

It was leftovers would you have preferred for it to go in the bin.? You made yourself look silly there complaining OP.

If this was before/ during lunch then fair enough to complain but leftovers...no.

Absolutely this!! I don't think I'd want day old sushi that had been left out!

Maireadh · 07/09/2024 07:54

So was it delivered on Tuesday and refrigerated, untouched, for a party on Wednesday? If so the colleague was greedy to take some of it home on Tuesday night.

But if you’d put it out for lunch on Tuesday then all gone home and it was leftovers, I don’t see why the colleague couldn’t take it.

The food was delivered on Monday for Tuesdays lunch but on Monday night before the food was due to be put out the next day, she filled a box for herself and took it home when she thought everyone had left for the night leaving less food for her colleagues on Tuesday?

If so, what happened on Tuesday? Did your boss say anything? I'm guessing the food was refrigerated on arrival on Monday?

If she was taking ut when everyone has gone home it must gavd been left over after lunch. In which case you are a tell-tale. You are sticking your nose in where you shouldn't.

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 07/09/2024 08:11

You must be the office busy body and martyr.

Jdh172 · 07/09/2024 08:11

If its leftovers then it's fine

Civilservant · 07/09/2024 08:14

If it was refrigerated the day before to eat the next day then taking food wasn’t ‘greedy’ it was theft IMO! Way beyond a faux pas.

hopeishere · 07/09/2024 08:15

Leftovers fine-ish. Unless it could reasonably have been kept in the fridge for the next day.

Before people have had any - no.

We have leftovers sometimes and everyone is happy if it gets taken home as it would be chucked otherwise.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 07/09/2024 08:16

Timing is everything. Was it before everyone had a chance to get some food? Or was it leftovers at the end of the day?

Diedrewasthereyeah · 07/09/2024 08:25

Who cares about leftovers. So you watched her and you secretly call her greedy in general. Aren’t you nice. If you wanted some you can use the power of communication and say hey Julie Id like some but or be mean spirited, make a post calling her greedy.

12 wraps "so 6 full ones" - what are "6 full ones"?

So you mean she did this at the end of the day, everyone else had left and she took leftovers that would otherwise have been binned? I think that's fine. We'd do the same in my place of work, although we always make an effort to share things out fairly.

viques · 07/09/2024 08:35

Would you eat sushi that had been breathed over at lunchtime by goodness knows how many people then stored in an office fridge overnight? Even if it was non fish sushi I think it would be grim, badly stored cooked rice is a well known vector for food poisoning for a start.

I think the OP has realised that there is a difference between swooping down on food before anyone has had a chance to share it and taking home leftovers that can’t be kept safely.

Bodeganights · 07/09/2024 08:36

Zombie thread, no 3 this morning. Very weird.

Usually wraps are cut in half if they are made commercially.

If it was sushi one would hope so. Eating sushi that’s been left out overnight is not a good idea 😂
