Duvet cover and bottom sheet together or separately?!

OP posts:
DailyDitties · 03/09/2024 11:27

OP I do it together.

I have a normal double bed and what I consider nice sheets (400tc john lewis cotton). So they're heavier/thicker sheets than some, but not as heavy as truly posh people's sheets!

My understanding is you'd be extremely unlikely to damage your washing machine with one set of sheets. I have a 7kg washing machine and put in my duvet cover, base and pillows. I separately do pillow protectors and mattress protector together as they are not 100% cotton, they absorb a lot of water and I think it would be too much for my machine as you'd need to ram them in to get it all in.

In terms of tangling - I often do up the duvet before putting it in so things don't get inside. I have also learnt it's good to do same sheets as they will discolour together evenly (even whites over years change colour very very slightly), and if they're cotton it's good to keep separate from sythentics as they will get bobbly more quickly that way.

Don't worry though, I'm sure you're doing great. You hear of people abusing their machines all the time but I think a standard bed set is fine :)

southpawsofthenorth · 03/09/2024 11:31

Separately, but only because I have no washing line so can only dry one sheet at a time.

Demonhunter · 03/09/2024 11:31

If you're not overfilling the drum I can't see the issue. Colour separation like everything else and the appropriate drum fill.
How very odd.

AsYouWiiiiiiiiiiiiish · 03/09/2024 11:32

Always washed the entire bedding set together.
Mine only get tangled when in the dryer, so sometimes I dry them separately.

Actually I do bottom sheet and pillow cases every week and duvet cover every other week - but when I do the lot they go in at the same time.

I think this echoes my DM's routine really. Back in the 1960s and 70s, before the days of duvets and fitted sheets, we would have a bottom sheet, a top sheet then blankets, ordinary quilts and couterpanes. On bedding change day my DM would remove the bottom sheets and pillow cases to go in to the wash. Then the top sheet would be moved to replace the bottom sheet and a clean sheet used for the new top sheet. Hence each sheet did a week as a top sheet followed by a week as a bottom sheet.

same here😁

iNoticed · 03/09/2024 11:35

We have a King Size bed and Super King duvet and a mattress protector.

A bedding wash is two washes as there’s too much volume to do in one was, but the bottom sheet either goes in with the duvet or the mattress protector without any rhyme or reason. In fact it probably would be better just doing with the mattress protector as it does get a bit knotted in the dryer with the duvet cover. Nothing a couple of shakes doesn’t fix though.

ApolloandDaphne · 03/09/2024 11:38

I've washed them all together for around 40 years now and I've never found an issue. I don't tumble them together though as they end up in lump and don't dry properly. I only do this if the weather is bad though.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 03/09/2024 11:25

I was at uni in the 1980s and that is what they in halls too. But a lot of people, like me, had duvets by then so just changed the bottom sheets.

I was speaking to someone from Aus and they said that they always use a top sheet under the duvet cover so that they only have to wash the top sheet and bottom sheet and not the duvet cover.

yep.

To desperately ask…Do you wash….

@ManchesterLu bit harsh.. I have no money so very worried about damaging the machine!

Always close up the duvet cover before putting it in the wash. I find everything else finds it's way in there during the wash and it can cause uneven spinning which the machine doesn't like.

I usually wash duvet cover, 4 pillow cases, bottom sheet, two towels and maybe some tea towels together and don't have a problem.

You won't break you're machine.

Benshawsberries · 03/09/2024 11:45

Depends on the colour

Desperate because I’ve just been told that they don’t wash properly when in together and it can also damage the machine as they get wound round together !

Oh come on, no one washes one item at a time exclusively. Yes the washing machine is capable of washing both at the same time

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 03/09/2024 11:51

I have a 6kg machine and prefer to do the cover and some pillowcases and t-shirts, and the sheet in another wash. You're right to not overload the machine.

Marinel · 03/09/2024 11:52

Separately, because the duvet cover is king size so it won't all fit in together without overloading the machine. Duvet cover on its own, pillowcases and sheet together, usually with a hand towel or two.

FatOaf · 03/09/2024 11:56

I wash the bottom sheet with other white stuff; duvet cover (fastened closed) with other coloured stuff.

ilovesushi · 03/09/2024 11:56

Of course you can wash them together unless you have a teeny weeny drum in the washing machine. If they both fit in easily with a little additional space, then they are good to go together. If you are forcing them in then they may not wash or rinse thoroughly. Not issue for the machine though!

amoreoamicizia · 03/09/2024 10:00

Separately because my sheets are white but my duvet covers are coloured.

This.

Mattress protectors either get washed separately every now and again or with a sheet or 2, just depends what fits.

Marinel · 03/09/2024 12:04

That's not quite right. Overloading can damage the machine

Who told you that? It depends on the capacity of your machine as to how big a load it can handle.

ichundich · 03/09/2024 12:10

If they are different colour, yes.

TodayThisName · 03/09/2024 12:12

Could you pop the sheet inside one of the pillowcases if you're worried about them tangling? No idea if this would make a difference. I do mine together usually - never thought about it really.

I’ve been washing bedding for well over 50 years. Just chuck it all in together, duvet cover closed so other stuff doesn’t get inside it. All comes out clean and how on earth can your laundry damage a washing machine? It’s exactly what they’re built for.

unsync · 03/09/2024 12:20

The drum should only be half full. So whatever quantity of bedding fills to that level for your machine. People on here will have different sized drums and bedding. For instance, I have a Samsung ecobubble, I put the bottom sheet and pillow cases (superking) in one load and the duvet cover in another load.

No one is talking about overloading! We’re obviously talking about machines that have the capacity to wash the load. If the machine didn’t have the capacity, common sense would dictate not to keep loading it with more items… lol

viques · 03/09/2024 12:23

I use a top and a bottom sheet, so the sheets and pillow cases get washed more often than the duvet cover, all my bed linen is white so I don’t worry about matching. When the duvet cover eventually gets washed they all go in together.
