Duvet cover and bottom sheet together or separately?!

OP posts:
HowAmITheCatsGranny · 03/09/2024 10:23

Each bed set (duvet cover / bottom sheet / pillow cases) goes in as its own wash. I don’t generally mix clothes and bedding (just habit more than anything). I think older washing machines maybe had less capacity? As my dm always split a double or king size set into two loads.

EBearhug · 03/09/2024 10:24

Separately because white bottom sheet and dark duvet cover, but they are changed at the same time - though occasionally the bottom sheet is changed more often because of flooding peri period. But I have enough spares to deal with this without immediate laundry (or at least without immediate drying; I try not to let stains set.)

If everything was the same colour, I'd chuck them all in together. I've not heard about things knotting up together - the only times I've had problems like that has been with things like tights and dressing gown belts, and thry were easy to pull apart.

Unless you're actually experiencing issues with things coming out unwashed, I'd just carry on.

Growlybear83 · 03/09/2024 10:24

It depends. I often use a navy sheet with a pale coloured duvet cover, so would wash them separately, but if everything is a similar colour, I wash them together.

Babychewtoy · 03/09/2024 10:25

You need to close the duvet cover buttons so the sheet doesn’t end up in a ball inside it. Still won’t damage the machine though… that’s literally what the machine has been designed for.

JustAnInnocentQuestion · 03/09/2024 10:25

Yes, of course I wash!

GRex · 03/09/2024 10:26

Depends on colour. We have a great 11kg machine though, if you have a little crap 7kg machine and a king size duvet cover then I guess that might cause issues.

MassiveOvaryaction · 03/09/2024 10:26

Depends on the size of the machine surely?

And usually cover/pillow cases/sheet together, unless we've been using the dark cover/pillow cases, then they go separately to the cream sheet.

Not quite sure why it's so urgent today though @hejsl as presumably your machine is still ok even if you're 'supposed' to do it separately?

longtompot · 03/09/2024 10:28

I used to wash them together but have found the sheet doesn't always wash properly so now I wash the duvet cover and pillow cases together and the bottom sheet on its own. They are king size and despite my machine being a large capacity drum it doesn't seem to wash them well when together.

GLC789 · 03/09/2024 10:33

Together. But I always do the poppers/buttons up on the duvet cover before putting it in.. That stops all the rest of the wash infuriatingly getting stuck inside the duvet cover 😂😂😂.

I bought all white bedding too so it's easy one white wash and happy days! X

quantumbutterfly · 03/09/2024 10:33

Together at 60 degrees, they bundle up a bit when the drum tumbles but as long as the soap distributes in the water I figure the water will penetrate the fabric enough for cleaning & rinsing.

A launderette man once advised me to zig zag large items like duvets into the drum rather than bundle them in as it helps to prevent them rolling into a ball during the cycle. Same for tumble dryers.

I'm too invested in this subject.

Greyoutside · 03/09/2024 09:45

Together plus pillow cases, why wouldn't you?

This

ComeTheFckOnBridget · 03/09/2024 10:38

Love a laundry thread lol

I wash all my bedding together (except for silk pillowcases) because they're all cotton or linen and all white.

I would only wash a duvet cover separately if it's colour didn't match the sheet or if it couldn't go on a hot wash.

TonTonMacoute · 03/09/2024 10:38

Separately for double bed sheets, together for single.

The duvet covers are heavy cotton so it would be a squeeze to fit them all in my machine at one time. They definitely wouldn't wash properly if they were too tightly packed.

Noodlehen · 03/09/2024 10:39

YABVU for this post.

Same here, but I do sheet and pillow case together and duvet cover on its own!

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/09/2024 10:39

Unless bedding is actually soiled I can't see hygiene being an issue anyway. If an item was soiled I'd wash it separately.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 03/09/2024 10:40

Duvet cover and pillowcase in one wash, bottom sheets in a different wash but only because I separate whites (the sheets) and colours (the duvet set).

TheNuthatch · 03/09/2024 10:41

Just shove them all in together unless they are very different colours. Whoever told you that is spouting nonsense.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/09/2024 10:42

A super king, bottom sheet and pillowcases all go in together. Plus maybe e.g. the odd hand towel. And I don’t have an extra large capacity machine.

Topseyt123 · 03/09/2024 10:43

Together. Why the hell not? Just fasten up the duvet cover so that other items don't end up inside it and unbalance the drum.

Someone has been talking a load of bollocks to you.

AlwaysConfuseddd · 03/09/2024 10:45

Wash them together, dry them separately as they get balled up and don't dry properly

Whoowhoopitstbesoundofthedapolice · 03/09/2024 10:45

Usually, separate. The sheet is white and the duvet cover is coloured.

However, after a few uses I usually bung them in together - or if I'm rage cleaning/distracted it happens too. Never heard that about them breaking the machine, but I have heard if you over fill it stuff doesn't clean as well as it should

SphinxOfBlackQuartz · 03/09/2024 10:46

I have washed them together pretty much all my adult life and they have never been ruined and never damaged the machine...

TorroFerney · 03/09/2024 10:47

5128gap · 03/09/2024 09:59

No one should make you feel 'desperate' by criticising the way you do the washing OP. So if someone is overlooking you and had this level of influence that's another issue. If the desperation to be perfectly clean is coming from you, that's something else to address, maybe? Meanwhile, if you're worried do them separately. Though together is of course fine too.

Agree although i took it to reflect that she’s watching them go round waiting to see if the machine goes kaput.

Blueballetpumps · 03/09/2024 10:48

hejsl · 03/09/2024 09:52

Desperate because I’ve just been told that they don’t wash properly when in together and it can also damage the machine as they get wound round together !

How long have you been using the machine?

Your washing machine should come with a handbook telling you how much load it takes.

Ours takes 10kgs which is far more than a king size duvet cover and a sheet.

Usually I do the cover, sheet and pillow cases.
