...being described as "poncy" and "pretentious" in loads of different MN baby names threads?

I would love to know what marks a name out as poncy or pretentious.

Erm, is it wise to tell the www what they are? < ponders about privacy etc >

They are mostly polysyllabic (we have short surnames on the whole- one syllable long in my case and one of my sister's).

CantSleepWontSleep · 18/04/2008 13:47

But several of the recent poncey names threads have been in favour of them.

Yes YABU.

duchesse · 18/04/2008 13:48

Also, I would like to point out that I missed out the word "out" from the title by accident. I am not North American.

Johnso · 18/04/2008 13:48

YABU- Just don't read them!!
People who make generalisations about names are usually very stupid and fickle.
Don't give them another thought!!
You can't make everyone agree with you

duchesse · 18/04/2008 13:48

"off"!! "Pissed off".

Having an off day.

Out? Do you mean off?

RubySlippers · 18/04/2008 13:50

My DS's name is frequently referred to as "chavvy" or worse

i honestly, hand on heart, do not CARE!

i like, DH likes it and hopefully DS will like it

i think baby names seems to be one topic where feelings can get hurt on a frequent basis

duchesse · 18/04/2008 13:50

It doesn't matter- Cdo- Like you I love my children's names. I am just wondering what constitutes "poncy". Does it just mean "Name I wouldn't give my child because I don't know anyone (nice) called it"?

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 18/04/2008 13:51

dont worry about it ...there are two speeds on mn names

pncy chav and my own

zippitippitoes · 18/04/2008 13:51

thats three lol

Johnso · 18/04/2008 13:51

Poncy is in the eye of the beholder

msappropriate · 18/04/2008 13:51

I have no idea why people care about what other people say about their children's names. Or why ask other peoples opinions frankly. I have read things people have said about names I like and I just think well I would probably dislike their names too.

Agree Zippi- You must choose between poncy or chavvy

Squirdle · 18/04/2008 13:53

Yup have to agree with Cod, if you like them what does it matter what other people think. There was a thread on here recently saying DS3's name was chavvy (which it isn't) but hey, I love his name so I don't care. I'm sure your childrens names are lovely.

It does annoy me a bit when people openly criticise some of the more unusual names when it is comon knowledge that there are MNers on here with children of the same name.

what is your bacon aisle theory cod?

msappropriate · 18/04/2008 13:54

I would say that people say poncy when it is very upper class perhaps or very rare or with some sort of reference to an intellectual/literary source.
