...being described as "poncy" and "pretentious" in loads of different MN baby names threads?

I would love to know what marks a name out as poncy or pretentious.

does it matter what strangers think?
I lurve my girls names, they have been on poncy lists and old fashioned lists maybe even chavvy lists, but they are the names dh and I picked and we love em.

step away from the computer!

Blandmum · 18/04/2008 14:21

I like Maxine. On the unusual end of normal I would say.

Its all a continuum isn't it?

So poncy would span from Araminta at the far end to Arabella at the closer to normal end?

Hippy would have Leafmould at one end and Rain at the other?

ButterflyMcQueen · 18/04/2008 14:23

people who call names poncey are jealous imho

poncey= different

different = always open to ridicule on mn

Squirdle · 18/04/2008 14:23

Yes MB, I can never understand why people do that. It is like they are saying 'We like this name but we will call you that normal name as an abbrieviation because no-one else will like your proper name' Who cares if someone doesn't like your childs name. Not me. DS2 is Caleb and we had a few s when we named him. We adore his name and it suits him. I didn't care if MIL or cousins etc thought it was an odd name.

StillWaters · 18/04/2008 14:23

Cod you seem rather too interetsed in whether names are poncey or chavvy, alot of time and energy devoted to it.

Either you are just very bored or you should seriously consider Why This Might Be?

Come lie on my couch.....

Always silently applaud when anyone steps away from the Emily/Charlotte/Tom/Jack/Ben thing. Nothing wrong with those names of course but so safe. Bring on the Algernons and Ophelias (both present at dd's music group) and ponce away!

Squirdle · 18/04/2008 14:25

Makingdo, you have shower instaed

Squirdle · 18/04/2008 14:26

Or Downpour or Torrential or Hail Lee

hana · 18/04/2008 14:27

oh I love Caleb

never had a son..... was going to be Caleb or Finn
maybe a grandson one day
or pet?
lol

Squirdle · 18/04/2008 14:32

Tis a cool name Hana

Blandmum · 18/04/2008 14:32

You also have to take into account the surname.

Ophelia Edmundsun =Poncy
Ophelia Nutt or Balls = ridiculous

and all those people who say they would never criticize, they lie! Introduces them to an Ophelia Balls or an Abishag Tuesday and they would all snigger. trust me!

lljkk · 18/04/2008 14:33

DS2's name is described as either poncey or chav, honestly, I can't win.
I hate the way people ask about possibly chav names on MN, chav has come to mean 'bad taste that I'm sure you all believe is bad taste too' -- very elitist discussions.

wb · 18/04/2008 14:40

Actually - this thread has just reminded me: when we named ds1 my friend sent me a card saying "welcome to the 'gave my child a dog's name' club"

PuppyMonkey · 18/04/2008 14:46

Maxine was famously pronounced Maxime all the time by Ashley off of Coronation Street

johnsmummy · 18/04/2008 14:48

Well my DS(5) is called John (obviously). We get stick from both sides. Some people laugh saying it's so common, others that it's so old-fashioned, others think I'm trying to be poncy (especially when they hear us say Johnny) Others still ask if I had no imagination, so you can't win.

We chose it because we both liked it, simple as that. And yes, it's nice that there aren't 3 of them in his class at school.

When I first joined MN I saw some VERY unflattering comments about DS's name...now it is starting to creep into 'favourite name' lists, v slowly.

Which means it will shortly be more common but 'poncy'
then just common
then chavvy
then old fashioned.

Which is where it started out.

CantSleepWontSleep · 18/04/2008 16:55

Makingdo - go with Scarlet or Ashley.

CantSleepWontSleep · 18/04/2008 16:56

Oops - that wasn't an intentional change of spelling - meant Scarlett.

duchesse · 18/04/2008 18:42

No, I'm not Hermione. I know a Hermione, but am not one...
