...being described as "poncy" and "pretentious" in loads of different MN baby names threads?

I would love to know what marks a name out as poncy or pretentious.

duchesse, who gives a crap what people who seek approval from a baby names board think about your children's names? Thank God we don't all look at the top ten and pick or registers accross the land would be so dull.

MadameCh0let · 18/04/2008 18:52

Are your children called Ptolemy and Hermione???????

Absolutely Icod, you have to be able to visualise yourself having the nerve to shout at 'Nancy' or 'Polly' in Sainsbury's. If people are sniggering and you notice and you are hurt by that, then your children's names are too pretentious for YOU (the parent). If you don't notice lesser beings sniggering or didn't hear, didn't see them, wouldn't have cared anyway, then you've hit the right pitch.

AbbeyA · 18/04/2008 18:55

If you like them that is all that matters. I don't think that I would ask for opinions on here if a was naming a baby because you are bound to get the negative comments. Luckily we don't all like the same names.

duchesse · 18/04/2008 18:58

People in RL usually say "What lovely names"...to our face. Which is why I wonder that they crop up periodically on MN poncy name lists.

And no, not Ptolemy.

Each has 3 syllables (to balance single syllable surname)

name threads are fast track to argey-bargey and indignant faces. so some one posts "i hate FishyFlaps it is poncey/chavvy/fishy and unsurprisingly someone else posts "oi my children are called FishyFlaps you cheeky mare"

oh why bother asking a bunch of anonymous strangers what they think of your baby name? honestly do you ask strangers which shoes should you chose - probably not

so why ask a bunch of blethering women a pretty significant question?

pointydog · 18/04/2008 19:05

YABU. People don't really mind other people's names at all. They just like being pass-remarkable about names in general.

I mean, look at all teh lists people post about their top 10 names and then all teh comments in reply. People just like talking about names.

PosieParker · 18/04/2008 19:05

THe only thing that annoys me about names is when people try to be different with the spelling, why can't Myles just be Miles or Rubie be Ruby?

marina · 18/04/2008 19:05

ah, duchesse, I thought the most recent thread was mainly an affectionate homage to the more ornate name. I think if you have the confidence to go for some of those beauties, sod the Bacon Aisle and all its unimaginative residents
(please don't tell me you have a niece called Wilgefortis)

msappropriate · 18/04/2008 19:14

I think mn-ers regularly seek shoe advice

scottishmummy · 18/04/2008 19:16

do they squabble about that as well oi your Jones shoes are chavvy etc

msappropriate · 18/04/2008 19:20

Most likely. I rarely go on the style threads. I think theres a lot of you should never wear x if you are y etc etc.

spicemonster · 18/04/2008 19:20

My nephew's name was held up as an example of a completely ridiculous name on here

I don't care though. I like the names me and my sisters have chosen for our children. And surely that's all that's important?

scottishmummy · 18/04/2008 19:24

yes chose your preference and be happy - what does it matter what any one thinks?

RosaDLuxe · 18/04/2008 19:41

People on threads like this need to tell us what the names are so we can judge for ourselves!

ButterflyMcQueen · 19/04/2008 18:05

sorry but Nancy and polly causing 'sniggering' ( one of my least favourite words) ? how bizarre

W live in a northern town - no one would bat an eye at Nancy and Polly - nor do they

Ptolomey and Coco are remarked upon with respect

i do not believe we are that unusual

Sian Ailish Helena Coco Monica Maeve Iona Nancy Flora(s) Daisy Missie Emillia Idalina Imani Polly Verity Tyne Sylvie Ava Melody Sienna - all girls at school with my dcs - people must spend an awful lot of time agog in Waitrose Tesco

EffiePerine · 19/04/2008 18:30

I like poncy names

DH has vetoed Clovis (sigh)

PS: A correction: he will only agree if the first name is Reginald

nkf · 19/04/2008 18:35

If it makes you pissed, you should drink less.

duchesse · 20/04/2008 19:10

grin at nfk

Lauriefairycake · 20/04/2008 19:13

I only like "poncey" and "chavvy" names

who gives a toss....

you need to grow a thicker skin..........the people you're complaining about aren't real - your friends are real, your family is real.

shouldbeworking · 20/04/2008 19:38

I have a pet hate of names spelt deliberately incorrectly . Condemns poor child to a life time of having to spell their name or putting up with it spelt wrong. Just my opinion though surely the important part is that you like the name.

shouldbeworking · 20/04/2008 19:42

Oh and the poor child isn't going to suffer for your choice of name. My dp has an unusual name which caused him untold misery at secondary school. He certainly didn't appreciate his parents choice although he doesn't mind it now
