To be flabbergasted, amazed, and perplexed by my friends bean choice

I was recently at a friend’s house and noticed they only had supermarket own brand beans. I was flabbergasted and astonished. It has rocked me to the core.

My friend isn’t short of money. She earns six figures, has a 900k house (mortgaged), has a BMW, and holidays in the Maldives annually.

I was there for lunch. I was expecting bruschetta with cherry tomatoes from the artisan farmer’s market. When she offered me beans on toast, I just couldn’t take it any longer and had to leave. I told her it was because I thought I’d left the hot tub on, but I think she knew it was the beans.

It’s been on my mind ever since, although I’ve tried to forget it. I thought about leaving a four pack of Heinz on her doorstep but not sure she’d take them with the kindess they were intended.

Should I just go no contact or low contact?

Asda own reduced salt and sugar, here. I don't mind them, and my kid doesn't know any different.
Can baked beans afficianado's really tell the difference?

LaMarschallin · 02/09/2024 09:57

I was expecting bruschetta with cherry tomatoes

Carbs?!

YANBU, Heinz beans are awful.

Leave her Branston.

PS don't go LC, she's to be pitied.

Edited

@AgnesX important question: do Branston beans taste of Branston pickle? There’s a tin in my mum’s cupboard that I’m too scared to try! (My mum doesn’t eat that sort of food anymore)

Lotusflower16 · 02/09/2024 10:02

Yeah, right!

Thank you for letting us now how superior you are. It’s Monday morning, how about you say something funny to make us laugh as you appear to be the expert?

@EffortlesslyInelegant This is not a 'positive butt-sucky comments only' forum. The simple fact is that the OP is about as funny as a shit sandwich and we are doing her a favour by telling her this.

I disagree and I'm doing you a favour by telling you this. The OP's post made me do a tinkly laugh out loud.

But did you tilt your head?

Petitchat · 02/09/2024 10:04

She has the money
You have the snobbery (in a nice way)

MonsieurBlobby · 02/09/2024 10:04

NC

Unless she lives 'semi-rurally' and is restricted in her choice of bean.

No, just like ordinary beans, it's just a brand.

Tbh, I've only had them a couple of times. Him indoors who does the shopping currently prefers Lidl's own brand.

BeLilacMaker · 02/09/2024 10:05

She's probably ND.

Or if she's 35 plus - peri.

60 plus - early onset dementia.

Or all of the above.

It definitely made me realise that 'rich' people are rich for a reason- They are often quite tight with money.

Tesco bleach must be good- oddly, a GP I had says she only ever buys Tesco own brand soluble aspirin for her migraines.

Says it works for her, Tesco soluble aspirin and an anti nauseant, and she's good to go.

She says she never buys Nurofen or branded painkillers as ''A waste of money, and no more effective''.

The key ingredient is the same in the generic products, it's the filler that's different. A lot of drugs are like that, some people can only take certain brands.

No, the are the best! Lovely thick sauce and plenty of beans. Unlike Heinz yukky thin sauce.

MikeRafone · 02/09/2024 10:13

Has it bean a while since you’ve bean for lunch? Maybe your host does think beans on toast is an issue

grumpygrape · 02/09/2024 10:13

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/09/2024 09:32

Now I want beans on toast, with loads of cheese on top 😆

Ahem, the cheese has to be on top of the toast and then the beans on top of the cheese. Anything else is just WRONG. 😂

BabaYetu · 02/09/2024 10:13

The important part is the pronunciation of bruschetta, obviously.

Did you pronounce it correctly or like a teenager with a Saturday job at Pizza Express?

Branston beans are far superior and pickle-free. Further enhanced by a bit of brown sauce.

I boycott Heinz beans because the tins don't stack properly.

anyone who stacks tins has a death wish, they're saving you from yourself.

It’s better than the endless threads complaining about things imo

laveritable · 02/09/2024 10:17

True story ! I did visit a very wealthy 70 yr old neighbour once and she had a spread of all beige food ( just like school dinners ) . I was really trying to be polite! A cup of tea and 2 biscuits is good enough for me!

DontCallAnyoneAnIdiotOrYouWillBeBannedAgain · 02/09/2024 10:20

Definitely low contact - if I had a friend acting in this preposterous way I would check whether she was ok first, then if she was, just limit my contact.

You can only support her up to a point @C64 . Her life, her choices. She will realise in time when other Proper Bean Lovers (PBL) fade away, just what she has lost in you. Beans on TOAST?? An act of desecration to the wonderful bean.

I had a friend who I shall call "Doris" (will change some of the details so as not to be outing) who - and my hands are shaking writing this - PUT HER CHOCOLATE IN THE FRIDGE. There, I have written it. If was a horrific discovery and I gently brought it up to her, that chocolate loses flavour in the fridge, but no, she wasn't going to listen. Whatever I said, she was determined to do it her way. In the end, I had to wobble walk away.

I heard years later that other friends had tried to tell her. But she had to learn the hard way - by breaking her teeth on the Whole Nut bar. It caused her untold pain and misery so I am told and her front tooth

If you are reading "Doris", I am still hear for you. I bear no grudges.

Edit - yes I have too much time on my hands this morning 😃

SquirrelSoShiny · 02/09/2024 10:22

I hope you were discusted and fumming too.

SiobhanSharpe · 02/09/2024 10:24

No, no! Heinz beans are terribly, terribly sweet -- so bad for you.
The only way to go is to make your own, with Borlotti beans you have soaked overnight, and Tuscan tomatoes, darling.
Failing that, Heinz No Added Sugar beans are a (barely) acceptable substitute. Or possibly Waitrose own brand if you must have shop-bought. But you will be judged...

Womblealongwithme · 02/09/2024 10:25

God there's some right miserable sods on here. Even if you don't think it's funny, just ignore it. Talk about pissing on someone's chips, just because they posted a light-hearted thread. 😂

At least ... I think it was light-hearted ...
