To be flabbergasted, amazed, and perplexed by my friends bean choice

I was recently at a friend’s house and noticed they only had supermarket own brand beans. I was flabbergasted and astonished. It has rocked me to the core.

My friend isn’t short of money. She earns six figures, has a 900k house (mortgaged), has a BMW, and holidays in the Maldives annually.

I was there for lunch. I was expecting bruschetta with cherry tomatoes from the artisan farmer’s market. When she offered me beans on toast, I just couldn’t take it any longer and had to leave. I told her it was because I thought I’d left the hot tub on, but I think she knew it was the beans.

It’s been on my mind ever since, although I’ve tried to forget it. I thought about leaving a four pack of Heinz on her doorstep but not sure she’d take them with the kindess they were intended.

Should I just go no contact or low contact?

Well I opened this thread in the vague thought it might be interesting or amusing, I guess we were both disappointed.

even if minted id still buy yellow label items and basic brands if i liked them,

SIL's sister married a multi millionaire - They are so rich that he bought the mansion next to his as they ''Didn't want neighbours''.

He evidently goes ape if she buys anything other than Tesco own brand bleach.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/09/2024 08:56

Am I really the only person who opened the thread thinking it'd be about coffee?Blush Grin

(And Heinz 5 Beanz with a bit of smoked paprika and Tabasco for the tinned pulses for the tinned ones in sauce, most own brands are fine for unsauced beans which we use in much greater quantity.)

thats the thing why splash out unnecessary unless you like the item etc,

Bjorkdidit · 02/09/2024 08:57

I realise this is supposed to be humour but the serious message behind it all is that just because you can afford the expensive version of something it doesn't mean you have to buy it, or that it is the best available.

Heinz beans are shit and perform poorly in blind taste tests even for people who say they could only possibly eat Heinz. Likewise for ketchup and soup.

Perhaps your friend likes the brand she buys? I have a lot more respect for people who know their own minds and buy the things they like instead of those who buy brands because they think they are better than supermarket own.

We have a decent disposable income, but we sometimes have beans on toast because we like it and it's quick and easy. The beans are usually M&S because we like them and we shop there reasonably frequently (split with Aldi) and you can just buy a few cans for the cupboard.

Is this meant to be funny?

TAAT isn’t it? The woman put out that her friend served her a sandwich.

Bibblunders · 02/09/2024 08:58

Heinz make beans for Aldi, Asda etc....they just put their own label on.

People are so gullible.

EveryDayisFriday · 02/09/2024 09:00

I lived in a big house when I was younger but my parents lived frugally. I remember a friend saying to me "that's why you're rich, you have Tesco value bread". 😆.

i think there was a case of an item made for aldi being on sale in Waitrose and it was said x company makes the same items across different supermarkets just uses different brand names

It definitely made me realise that 'rich' people are rich for a reason- They are often quite tight with money.

Tesco bleach must be good- oddly, a GP I had says she only ever buys Tesco own brand soluble aspirin for her migraines.

Says it works for her, Tesco soluble aspirin and an anti nauseant, and she's good to go.

She says she never buys Nurofen or branded painkillers as ''A waste of money, and no more effective''.

Oh, that sounds interesting, got a link?

But maybe the OP's friend hadn't had time to go to the artisan farmer's market for the ingredients for bruschetta with cherry tomatoes so had to rely on something that could be made really quickly from the storecupboard?

oakleaffy · 02/09/2024 09:06

Taste test here..
TL, DR {Too long, don't want to read...Waitrose was the winner!}

or garlic, they cant eat garlic

If I was Queen I’d eat whatever I bloody well wanted! What’s the point of being Head of State if you can’t if you’ve got to worry about whether people object to your breath?

Bollocks to that. Orf With Their Heads

That's true about the painkillers.

Usually the same active ingredients and sometimes even exactly the same tablets at many times the cost.

Of course Nurofen have many different variations with slightly different specialities to 'add value' but they won't necessarily perform significantly better than a basic ibuprofen tablet.

Fucking desperate.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 02/09/2024 09:13

@C64 is this a wind up???? if not, then you are a dreadful snob! I have used tesco beans for years! branded everything else but beans and garden peas are all the same!! the beans used to be 3p a tin!!

Planesmistakenforstars · 02/09/2024 09:15

Sorry OP, your attempt at being funny has fallen really flat. Maybe make up a thread about Oasis tickets, those seem to be going down a storm.

they taste totally different, the sauce is vile

ilovesooty · 02/09/2024 09:18

If I were a friend of someone with this mindset she wouldn't be invited again.

In any case I imagine I'm in a minority in not being able to tell the difference between most brands of baked beans.

NoahVale · 02/09/2024 09:19

also shops own paracetamol and ibuprofen
really cannot see how they could be any different.

mydogisthebest · 02/09/2024 09:20

Sainsbury's own are nice but the best are M&S and they are pretty cheap. I don't mind Heinz but too expensive now and Branston are just revolting

Yeah, or something like the one last night where the poster’s partner only gave her £250 a month. People were frothing.
