To be flabbergasted, amazed, and perplexed by my friends bean choice

I was recently at a friend’s house and noticed they only had supermarket own brand beans. I was flabbergasted and astonished. It has rocked me to the core.

My friend isn’t short of money. She earns six figures, has a 900k house (mortgaged), has a BMW, and holidays in the Maldives annually.

I was there for lunch. I was expecting bruschetta with cherry tomatoes from the artisan farmer’s market. When she offered me beans on toast, I just couldn’t take it any longer and had to leave. I told her it was because I thought I’d left the hot tub on, but I think she knew it was the beans.

It’s been on my mind ever since, although I’ve tried to forget it. I thought about leaving a four pack of Heinz on her doorstep but not sure she’d take them with the kindess they were intended.

Should I just go no contact or low contact?

I boycott Heinz beans because the tins don't stack properly.

I hate tins that won't stack in the cupboard!
Aldi beans here. My picky son won't eat any others.

In fact we've shopped mostly at Aldi since they opened one here about 5 or so years ago. My kids are so Aldi brainwashed that when I bought a Twix from a newsagent, they were like "wow, it's just like a Jive bar!"

I read somewhere that the royals aren't allowed to eat baked beans (amongst other food items) as they can't risk farting while on public engagements.

Sorry for derailing the thread.
Any good fart stories? No. Ok then 🫢🥳

Excellent point. Does one fart more fragrantly on Waitrose Essential Baked Beans than on Tesco own brand…?

or garlic, they cant eat garlic

I didn't think this thread would be the one where we would discover that the Royals are in fact vampires...

Perhaps she gave you the below par beans on purpose, knowing you'd leave as soon as you saw them. She wanted you to leave.
Have you upset her recently? Did you have her over for coffee and offer her broken biscuits? Did she spy your emergency washing up liquid that wasn't Fairy?

The very worst are dented beans ( which is how Tesco's started out , selling on the dented beans) they tend to not stack that well.

I think if she's rich she should at least have M&S beans. They are very acceptable.

Now for the important question!

Beans off or on? Off and she's a friend for life - on and I'm sorry I really would leave and never look back

Same! Glad it's not just me, I thought I'm being weird and can't line them up properly so I stopped buying Heinz. I was also really annoyed when they reduced the quantity of beans in the tins about 4 years ago and you end up with 1/4 sauce and 3/4 beans.

the80sweregreat · 02/09/2024 08:44

I do feel you should blow her out op

oakleaffy · 02/09/2024 08:46

I FAR prefer supermarket own brand beans to Heinz.
I thought I was a ''bean snob'' and only bought Heinz ones, until staying with a relative {Million pound house and cupboards full of ''Value'' food.

The ''Own brand beans were so much nicer than Heinz, the beans firmer, and the sauce less 'thick'.

I never buy Heinz beans now, plus they are expensive compared to own brand ones.

Edit: For a headache, I find hot baked beans on wholegrain toast with marmite can really help ease the pain for some reason.

Dented beans? Or dented cans?

It's a grey drizzly Monday morning here and this thread is making me smile.🙂

It may just be creeping up to the Crow thread standard but many of you reading this may think otherwise.

Dented cans ! Sorry

They all vary slightly, don't they.. It was the Waitrose ones that Mum has that switched me over from Heinz.
