DH and I are looking to move from our small rural village to somewhere with a bit more buzz and more in the way of restaurants, bars, shops and community social events.

We had the kids quite young and they're about to fly the nest, meaning we have the luxury of downsizing to a more expensive area if needed and we don't need to worry about schools etc. We're barely grazing 40 and this is a sort of second lease of life for us, so we really want to find somewhere with a vibrant, welcoming community and more going on than our sleepy spot in suburbia currently offers!

London not an option and ideally we'll stay in the south east close to family.

Possible contenders include:

Marlow
Henley
St Albans
Winchester
Windsor

We'd really like it to be somewhere with a bit of charm and character as opposed to being very urban or built-up, hence the list above. Bonus points for being on a river or canal or with easy countryside access for some scenic walks with the dogs.

Am I missing anywhere else worth considering? And can anyone share first-hand experiences of what any of the above places are like? We've visited all of them regularly on days out but appreciate living there is a different matter.

Is Oxford worth adding to the list? I've heard it's not so welcoming to non-locals and can be quite cliquey...

I was going to suggest Bristol too. From your list I would go with Winchester - although I wouldn’t really describe any of them as ‘cosmopolitan’.

AntigoneFunn · 31/08/2024 22:05

With apologies to Lewes, it's got quite an insular vibe. I don't like it at all, although I'm born and bred London so that might have an influence. Grin

St Albans is dull. Windsor is dull and on the flight path. South west London around Heathrow is affordable but dull and in the flight path. £700K won't get you much past a 3 bed terrace in reasonable parts of London.

If you want a big-ish town with access to
London and the coast then somewhere like Haywards Heath might be more suitable. Somewhere like Chichester is a bit chichi and Portsmouth and Southampton are nearby for 'big' shopping.

If it were me I would avoid North Kent from the Medway to Margate with an allowable blip for Whitstable and Deasaltwe.

We live in Bath-
Which I think fits your criteria - but not in south east

I know all the places you mention well and have lived in quite a few.

I've lived in Stalbans twice- good for commuting but I actually found it a bit deadly in terms of cultural or leisure stuff as it was geared up to couples commuting with kids at nursery/school - I didn't think the pubs and bars even were that nice- still have friends who live there and they think the same - ok whilst kids were school age but after that point- they are off. you won't get much for your money either

Winchester isn't too bad and is less commuter dominated. Attractive place- again not amazing amounts 'going on' but it depends what you are after

I like Marlow to look at but I always feel it's a bit lacking in loads of practical shops- nice for a lunch and a stroll and a bit up its backside - more than it used to be- very pretty place though but if you want loads of cultural stuff I think you might get bored of it quickly- if you just like pubs and eating out then it's lovely to look at

Personally if you want to be south east and want a bit of a vibe and stuff going on I would either go to Guildford/Godalming area or possibly Hove , Lewes or Hastings if you don't want to consider London

I've lived in Windsor quite recently when we came back from 2 years overseas- I don't think it's the vibe you are after at all - again not much culturally and the plane noise is pretty full on morning till night many days -

Have lived in Oxford and Canterbury too- Oxford fits well - I liked it-- Canterbury is nice too - has some grim bits , as does Oxford , but most places do - was good for coast etc

Echolight · 31/08/2024 22:18

St Albans is a cultural desert and full of braying poshos. It's boring boring boring.

Muthaofcats · 31/08/2024 22:23

Marlow cultureless and boring. Not much to it and v conservative/expensive. Likewise with Henley which is basically more of the same the next village along.

How about Guildford / godalming? Still v conservative but ticks the box for being by countryside but still easy access to London for culture. Or Kingston / Richmond?

OP probably thinks it’s ‘too’ cosmopolitan 😂😂

I’m not sure I understand what the OP means by ‘cosmopolitan’.

Meadowwild · 31/08/2024 22:29

Henley? Ascot?

Marlow looks lovely, but I've only ever driven through. DH told me though that he once tried to buy a Guardian there and the shopkeeper said, 'Oh no, we don't stock that. Never been a demand for it round here!' Grin

Guildford is great. You can be from the centre of town with its lovely cobbled streets and alleyways of shops and restaurants into the hills and woods within a few minutes. And there are river walks and water sports, theatres, great music venues. Just over half an hour into London on the fast train. One hour on the slow train.

Oxford is lovely but crammed with tourists, A friend's mother retired there recently and apparently she looks ten years younger already - out every night at talks and concerts, wild swimming and walking, already invited to loads of parties, so it sounds sociable.

Probably somewhere with a nice cafe culture and independent shops. Which isn’t really what cosmopolitan means (to my mind, anyway). I always thought cosmopolitan meant somewhere that’s busy, has good nightlife and lots of things to do. Although all the places that OP mentions are lovely, I don’t think any of them have that much in the way of amenities or culture, because they’re all quite small.

Lemons1571 · 31/08/2024 22:37

Oxford is bringing in a traffic scheme whereby residents can only drive 100 days in a year (6 cameras sited on various road points around the city). So be careful of that.

Cheltenham? Love the Brewery Quarter there.

Somewhere between Oxford and London - M40 corridor?

It means ‘from many places’, or ‘sophisticated in an international way’, though. Which I wouldn’t say of anywhere on the OP’s list, though, perfectly nice though those places may be.

You’ve put it much better than me! I agree with that. I didn’t word it properly in my post.

MichaelandKirk · 31/08/2024 22:57

Chiswick?

MichaelandKirk · 31/08/2024 22:57

Chiswick?

I thought the OP didn’t fancy London. And you can’t get anything for the OP’s budget in Chiswick! It is absolutely beautiful there though. If money was no object, I’d move to Chiswick in a heartbeat.

Mumblechum0 · 31/08/2024 23:41

Marlow definitely doesn't fit that description of cosmopolitan, though I've noticed that in the last couple of summers there are loads of Saudis/ppl in Arabic dress in Marlow at the weekends, they seem to all stay at the Compleat Angler and take photos of each other in the middle of the High Street. Vast majority of Marlow residents are white MC so not overly cosmopolitan.

GoldOnyx · 31/08/2024 23:46

OP, it sounds like you’re more after white MC Home Counties places rather than something that’s cosmopolitan.

Cannotthinkofausername09876 · 31/08/2024 23:59

Have a look at Berkhamsted - sounds like it might tick a lot of boxes for you!

SleepyHollowed84 · 01/09/2024 00:00

Sheffield. Buy a mansion in the peaks and you can be in London in two hours if you need to be. Or just explore the lovely north 🥰

Barney16 · 01/09/2024 00:09

Oxford but parking is awful and generally driving is heavily discouraged. I love Marlow but it's not cosmopolitan. I would go for London but I'm not sure what you would get for your money. I love Richmond but it's very very expensive, Greenwich but again pricey great transport links though.

Crikeyalmighty · 01/09/2024 00:16

Could anyone say where OP has. Mentioned cosmopolitan though? As people keep bringing it up- she may be perfectly happy with a place predominantly white middle class

EmeraldRoulette · 01/09/2024 00:22

@Crikeyalmighty it’s in the title

I’m not sure what cosmopolitan means in 2024 though.

Crikeyalmighty · 01/09/2024 00:30

@EmeraldRoulette haha- you are totally correct of course!!

rumblegrumble · 01/09/2024 00:52

Marlow and Henley trains aren't great in the evening, they don't really work if you're interested in going into town for shows etc. Definitely check what time the last trains leave and arrive. Although you could use Wycombe or Maidenhead - but then you'd have to drive or factor in the cost of cab. They're also not in the Chilterns; I don't know Henley as well but Marlow isn't really rural and doesn't have much in the way of countryside walks. I've always much preferred Henley as it seems to have a nicer 'vibe', but I've spent half my life in Marlow so maybe it's just overfamiliarity. I definitely wouldn't describe it as cosmopolitan though...
