£1 million or go back to the 90’s?

I’d choose to go back and do it all again.

I was 13-23, had an 80’s childhood and 90’s teens/young adult years.
Yes I know many say oh it’s just your youth, everyone feels the same, i‘m not sure if they do, It was an insane time to be young and naughty, we thought those days would last forever…the dancing to house music until 6 am, the booze and cigarettes, listening to indie & Brit pop in pubs, the music, the clothes, the films, the excitement and freedom
Me then, wouldn’t recognise me now

I'd go back, invest in property and make a shedload more than £1m. Didn't realise how lucky we all were at the time not to have social
Media and all the accompanying mental health issues.

Im a decade younger so was 3-13 then, although i enjoyed myself more in my 13-23 decade (partying, boyfriends, work, travel) there was something so hopeful about the 90s. Music and films were SO much better than the 00s, clubbing also - i used to see girls in butterfly tops covered in glutter with neon accessories and i couldn't wait to go to raves. But by the time i was old enough it was all wearing our business casual and 6 inch stilettos. 00s fashion was also way more tragic, skorts and tailored knee length shorts, and those massive circular belts!

Back to the 90s, no hesitation. My parents and DB would still be alive. I miss them more than words can say.

DearDenimEagle · 01/09/2024 19:42

I’d go back. I’d rather go back to the 70s but the 90s would do.

Lifechange2020 · 01/09/2024 20:14

I would definitely go back to the 90’s.

MammaMusings · 01/09/2024 20:15

I would jump at the chance to do this!!

@Chipbarm what if you went back to the 90s but you were still the age you are now? Would you still return, or would you take the money?

Now THIS is the question we need answered.

Echobelly · 01/09/2024 20:20

I had a great time in the mid to late 90s (early bit was rubbish) but a million quid would be much better in my book.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 01/09/2024 20:21

The 80’s/90’s were the best. We’re probably the last generation before social media took over.

LostTheMarble · 01/09/2024 20:23

Selfish me would go back to the 90s and make far different choices from then on in. I’d see my grandparents again, and appreciate the time with them more. I’d also have to balls to stand up to my parent knowing that they do not have the upper hand they think they did.

But, those different choices would mean not having my children. Whatever the past was, I’d not want to lose them. So responsible me would take the million and make a better future for them.

eggplant16 · 01/09/2024 20:26

Wasn't that when Thatcher kicked in?

IlooklikeNigella · 01/09/2024 20:29

The 90s were epic. Dancing in fields, walking for hours on a Saturday between multiple parties and nightclubs. Superstar DJs. Glitter and feathers and runners with everything.

Then came the excitement about earning limitless wads of cash in the 00s. Tailored dresses, stilettoes, fancy restaurants, discussions about investment portfolios.

This was followed by a deep yearning for inner peace and contentment, yoga retreats, drumming circles, continued education and a new more fulfilling career.

I then settled down, found a H and DC, now I'm back in my trainers and employ young people on their own path to fulfilment and success.

With the exception of my incredibly shit childhood I have loved all the stages so far.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 01/09/2024 21:30

Go back for sure. Would keep my wonderful dh and kids but do everything else differently.

Hardly ever took a photo but I can still picture my friends, family, nights out, sitting in a fog of silk cut and white musk on the bus, watching telly with a 50p pick and mix, waiting for my bf to call on the landline. There is a weird disconnect between humans now. Relationships (all kinds) tend to be more transactional and seem shorter lived - they even have a name 'situationships.' Casual is the norm now and ghosting is acceptable, if you dont think so, you're just needy. Unprecedented loneliness across all ages. Less FOMO in the young, but more fear of participation. Offence easily found and 'toxic' people everywhere. I agree with PP saying that a whole new order emerged with the noughties and a weird mist descended. Still haven't learned the new rules and don't care to, not even for a million.

6ksn · 01/09/2024 21:32

I was a teen/uni student in the 90s. I enjoyed it. But give me the million!

Lollipop81 · 01/09/2024 21:57

I’m a few years younger than you and I preferred the noughties and the 10’s. I’m still enjoying life now though, although in a totally different way. I think you just need to embrace the change as you age.

Axcis · 01/09/2024 22:20

Take the cash and get yourself to a 90s reloaded weekender in butlins.

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 01/09/2024 23:07

Try reading some of the books written by Jason Ayres... 1980, 1981 & 1982. These are just about this & very nostalgic.

Frazzledstudentmom · 01/09/2024 23:08

Back to the '90s. Try harder at school - I know I could have achieved so much more! Actually tried in college, spending less time in the pub! Invested my inheritance properly and not listening to the men in my life!

RienDeRienNon · 02/09/2024 00:04

You can go back! Just buy the next Oasis tickets that come out 😂

Itsjustmeheretoday · 02/09/2024 00:05

Nourishinghandcream · 31/08/2024 15:34

Most people feel like that about "their" era.
The 90''s were no more magical or special than the times before or after. It is your youth and of course it felt good but people born at different times feel the same about when they were young.

Agree with this. I'd go back but only if I had the opportunity to make different choices

Borninabarn32 · 02/09/2024 00:09

£1M. I have lots of regrets and things I wish I hadn't had to suffer. But I have an amazing partner and child, I would go through that trauma a hundred times over to have my DS and DP. £1M would be life changing though. We're modest people, we want space to grow our own food and let our kids get dirty.

expiredplants · 02/09/2024 00:14

Sod the money, I’d go back. But the eighties for me.

LaDamaDeElche · 02/09/2024 09:38

1 million. The 90's were fun, but life moves on. Definitely need the million now more than to relive old glory days!

Hard to know if it's rose tinted glasses or what? I guess we are where we are and we have to deal with what's infront of us. I don't feel safe or connected anymore.
