£1 million or go back to the 90’s?

I’d choose to go back and do it all again.

I was 13-23, had an 80’s childhood and 90’s teens/young adult years.
Yes I know many say oh it’s just your youth, everyone feels the same, i‘m not sure if they do, It was an insane time to be young and naughty, we thought those days would last forever…the dancing to house music until 6 am, the booze and cigarettes, listening to indie & Brit pop in pubs, the music, the clothes, the films, the excitement and freedom
Me then, wouldn’t recognise me now

Easy. I'll take the money now, thanks. I'd never go back.

Bunnybear42 · 31/08/2024 18:20

I would go back ! Simpler times - no smart phones/ films on demand . Remember the fun of a Saturday night trip to blockbuster? waiting for a new series on tv / cinema/ cd . Outdoors with friends more - less exposed to danger of world around us etc. I miss those day's however I would make much smarter choices if I could do it all again (so long I end up with my 2 dcs of course!) 😉 I was born in 1980

unsync · 31/08/2024 18:29

Only if I could change getting married. Otherwise I'll take the money.

weegiemum · 31/08/2024 18:32

I'd go back. I turned 20 in 1990, got together with my now-dh then too. Engaged in 93, qualified as a teacher, married in 94, bought a house in 96, went travelling a bit. Got pregnant with dd1 in 99. It was a fabulous decade, and also difficult as even with so much to be positive about my MH was poor. If I could go back and be able to let then-me know how happy now-me is, it would be a real gift!

DilemmaDelilah · 31/08/2024 18:36

If I went back I would choose not to marry XH and I would look after my health better. However today I have the most wonderful husband who I would probably have never met, and that is more than enough to compensate for breast cancer now. I would go for the £1m so that I could retire now and we could spend our remaining years in comfort and doing things together.

@Chipbarm what if you went back to the 90s but you were still the age you are now? Would you still return, or would you take the money?

@Chipbarm I'd go back, no question about it. I was 21-31( I'd rather go back to 82 if you could sort that).

id easily pass on the 1m to have my Dad back & my Nana.

@doyoulikemyyams I'd still go back for my Dad & Nana, but otherwise no, if I had to be my age now.

budgiegirl · 31/08/2024 18:48

The 90s 100%. Clubbing was the best time, the euphoria, chatting to random friendly people like they were my best mate, no camera phones, dancing for 6hrs straight, walking bare foot home, no responsibilities, the only concern was how straight I could get my hair to go out (pre-straightners), cheap student rent, low cost student loans and not having to pay for a degree. I loved the 90s

And this is exactly how I feel about the 80's (except for the straight hair - it was all wavy perms then!)

I think everyone thinks the time they spent in their late teens, early 20's was the best time. Student life, no responsibility, falling in love, dancing, drinking, getting your first job/first house etc. A great time, whatever decade you did it in.

But would I go back to my late teens? I don't think I would. Because I have a DH and three children, and I didn't have them then. Plus I'm on the edge of wanting to retire, and £1m would mean I could have a great time now with no financial responsibilities.

I might go back to when my kids were little. It was hard work, but I think that was the happiest time of my life. But all times of my life I suppose have been happy - each has had their challenges and joys.

Saddays · 31/08/2024 18:54

1 million no question..

JohnTheRevelator · 31/08/2024 18:58

No way would I go back to the 90s again. I turned 27 in 1990. I can honestly say that between 1992 and 1998 were the worst years of my life. I developed a serious illness that has left me permanently disabled, and meant that I had to give up work. Plus my marriage broke down.

doneandone · 31/08/2024 19:01

Ooh, could I go back to the 90s with hindsight?

JMSA · 31/08/2024 19:02

I reckon I'd go back and do it all differently Sad

5128gap · 31/08/2024 19:05

I'd have to think twice about it if the offer was go back to the 90s FOR the money rather than OR the money. I was a proper grown up them, raising children and worrying about bills. I'm so much happier now. But if I could go back with the million it would be tolerable I suppose.

the80sweregreat · 31/08/2024 19:07

Million for me. The 90s were not great for me.

Hollowvoice · 31/08/2024 19:08

I'd take the money now.
Not sure I really had a "golden era" and if I went back and did something differently I might not be where I am now.

MrsToddsShortcut · 31/08/2024 19:11

Definitely take the £1 million, as I'm not in the greatest place financially and it would mean my kids have security in the future.

I loved my youth and I had a blast, but i think we look back at the periods when we were kids/teens with rose coloured glasses because largely, we had none of the responsibility of kids, mortgages, running a household. Unless we had caring responsibilities (which some kids do), we had school and then just free time to hang out with friends/listen to music/go to gigs, festivals.

I loved my youth, but I also like the 'me' I am now - I have all the confidence and knowledge of middle age and I'm much better for it. I was quite messed up when I was young.

This a million times over

Tisfortired · 31/08/2024 19:25

Could I have 500k and 5 years in the 90s?

I was only 0-10 in the 90s but would absolutely have loved to have been a young adult. My aunt is 11 years older than me and I remember her having a great time 😂 I used to sit with her (in her navy blue stars/moon print wallpapered bedroom) watching while she did her make up and got dressed to go to clubs and raves, and watch my nanna telling her off for how she was going out and what time she got in.

Yes! My 90s too . The best

ReadingWorm · 31/08/2024 19:27

Go back. I could make a hell of a lot more money than just 1 million.

Chipbarm · 31/08/2024 19:35

@doyoulikemyyams No way, no point going back at this age as I likely wouldn’t want to spend 8 hours dancing my arse off to piano house 😂
I’d take the 1 million and live with the memories

@theduchessofspork I agree, it is mainly people who grew up in the 90’s who talk so passionately about it, 90’s and the 70’s too

I turned 18 in 1990. I had a great decade.
But I'd take the money. I'm retiring in three years and wouldn't want to go through all those years of work and childrearing again.

the80sweregreat · 31/08/2024 19:42

I wouldn't even wanna go back to the 80s 😂
( the money would be handy for the kids !)

Chipbarm · 31/08/2024 19:46

@queenofthewild Yes and could I please not tweeze the f out of my lovely, naturally full eyebrows 🙈
