£1 million or go back to the 90’s?

I’d choose to go back and do it all again.

I was 13-23, had an 80’s childhood and 90’s teens/young adult years.
Yes I know many say oh it’s just your youth, everyone feels the same, i‘m not sure if they do, It was an insane time to be young and naughty, we thought those days would last forever…the dancing to house music until 6 am, the booze and cigarettes, listening to indie & Brit pop in pubs, the music, the clothes, the films, the excitement and freedom
Me then, wouldn’t recognise me now

Most people feel like that about "their" era.
The 90''s were no more magical or special than the times before or after. It is your youth and of course it felt good but people born at different times feel the same about when they were young.

They don’t.

The 90s - between the fall of the Berlin Wall in 89 and the twin towers in 01, was a good era to be young, much like the 60s but better for women. There was a lot of global optimism about peace and prosperity, property was cheap. Rave and Britpop were strong youth cultures. Blair came in on a wave of hope later on.

Few people who were young after 08 feel like that about their era.

Oh my god the ‘me then, wouldn’t recognise me now’- exact same here but me ten years ago would be like wtf about me now. That said, million please😅😅😅

PeachyKeane · 31/08/2024 17:27

I would totally go back with all the confidence and knowledge I have now.

You'd be able to make a fortune gambling anyway.

crackfoxy · 31/08/2024 17:27

Go back in a heartbeat

TemuSpecialBuy · 31/08/2024 17:30

90s were great… things could only get better (Thanks Tony & D:ream) but I have 2 under 3 and a dock off mortgage.

Cash. Every time.

(presumably the million is tax free and I wont have Keir and Angie knocking on my door with their hands out…)

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 31/08/2024 17:30

I would take the money to add to retirement stash

OneTC · 31/08/2024 17:34

1m without a moments thought.

Whatever period you're thinking of was probably equally as shit, it's just when you happened to be young and unconcerned with real life

Doseofreality · 31/08/2024 17:36

I was drunk for the majority of the 90s, and for that reason I don’t feel competent to answer this question 😂

Beezknees · 31/08/2024 17:36

I'd take the million as I have no financial security currently.

I think this is really relevant. When you're young you have less responsibilities and less to lose. Everything seems possible and time seems endless. As you get older, the reality of life hits and you yearn for your carefree youth. I was young in the noughties so feel that way about then. My parents were young in the 70s and always bang on about how good it was then even though history books and actual statistics seem to suggest otherwise.

I think today's youth are a bit of an oddity as they almost seem to aware. In some ways this has been great as they are more healthy conscious and sensible than previous generations. I do think though that this has come at the cost of the blissful ignorance of youth that really is blissful.

I assume we won't have knowledge of our current lives... which would make it all too easy. So most of us would just repeat the same mistakes.

In that basis, I would take the money now.

SlabsBabs · 31/08/2024 17:52

The 90s 100%. Clubbing was the best time, the euphoria, chatting to random friendly people like they were my best mate, no camera phones, dancing for 6hrs straight, walking bare foot home, no responsibilities, the only concern was how straight I could get my hair to go out (pre-straightners), cheap student rent, low cost student loans and not having to pay for a degree. I loved the 90s.

rumblegrumble · 31/08/2024 17:53

Would I be inserted back into 90s me, with the knowledge and lived experience of 44 year old me? Absol-fucking-lutely, I dream of that every day! I would make some very different choices... (though I'd still pick Pulp over either Blur or Oasis!)

betterangels · 31/08/2024 17:55

I have some things I'd like to do over. You can keep the money for the chance to do that.

Boredlass · 31/08/2024 17:56

I grew up in the 90’s and I’d take the money. I have a far better life now.

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 31/08/2024 17:56

Given this is totally hypothetical the 90s every time.
People always say that everyone is nostalgic for 'their' era but the 90s really was different. It was the last era before the world really changed.
The world moved on a bit from say the mid 70s to the mid 90s, but not a lot really. Kids annoyed their parents, listened to music their parents didn't like, stayed out late and drank and smoked and did all sorts of horrendous things.
We got the very beginnings of the internet- MSN Messenger, chatrooms, AOL. All very exciting. But the cultural change of what followed is what makes the 90s seem like a last stand before moving to the next world. As Blur might say, modern life is rubbish.

Anonym00se · 31/08/2024 17:57

I’d never go back, my youth was traumatic and hellish. I wouldn’t even need the £1M sweetener to choose to stay where I am!

IntrepidCat · 31/08/2024 17:59

I had a blast in the 90s. Not sure £1mil really goes very far these days.

Agree with this. Most older people I've asked have said the best times were 'their' time, but they've also said the last really good time was the 90s. Then it started to go downhill...

RaspberryWhirls · 31/08/2024 18:03

£1 million now without question, although the 80's/90's good to a certain extent I was too broke to fully enjoy it. So £1 million now would help me live my best life now.

queenofthewild · 31/08/2024 18:03

If I can go back, can I take my hair straighteners with me?

I loved the 90s, but my hair was a frizzy mess!

LoopyGremlin · 31/08/2024 18:06

I'd go back without question. I'd make some different decisions career wise but not relationship wise.

NoWordForFluffy · 31/08/2024 18:07

I bloody loved the 90s (I'm also '76 vintage). But god, I'd take the million now please!
