"If you wasn't a teenage fan in the 90s you're not a real fan"

Seeing comments like this a lot in relation to the Oasis tour, but have seen them in relation to other bands as well!

I was a baby when Take That split up, but knew of them and liked their music and became a fan by their reunion. By some people's reckoning, I can't be a fan of Take That because I was too young to know anything of them in the 90s.

So AIBU to think that because you became a fan at a later date doesn't mean you can't be a real fan? Let everyone enjoy the music!

They’re talking bollocks.

PonyPatter44 · 31/08/2024 10:38

Of course it's nonsense. I am a HUGE Creedence Clearwater Revival fan 😁 and the band broke up before I was even born!

ToBeOrNotToBee · 31/08/2024 10:39

Oasis fans were insufferable then, they're even worse now.

curtaintwitcher78 · 31/08/2024 10:41

Well that's me off the Patsy Cline mailing list.

redtrain123 · 31/08/2024 10:42

I’m remember seeing that about a singer I like on a fan webpage. He did a series of concerts with another singer, which took off, and has done more duet tours since. Some people happen to mention they preferred his solo tours and were accused of not being real fans, as they didn’t (obsessively) like everything he did.

SeeTheWorldAnotherWay · 31/08/2024 10:46

I think a lot of that is just the Oasis attitude. It’s a tricky one. I really liked some of their songs (back then and maybe even now) but couldn’t stand The Gallaghers. Hated the whine (sounds like wheeeeeeeeyiiiiiiiine) that came in to some of their crooning and I generally thought they were a pair of twats….BUT with some really good tracks. I wouldn’t go to see them live though.
YANBU.

MrsToothyBitch · 31/08/2024 10:48

Total bollocks. By that logic I'm not a true Buddy Holly fan as I wasn't alive in the 50s; I came along in the 90s. I love his music so much. We had a Buddy Holly song as the first dance at our wedding.

I do understand the frustrations of people who have wanted this reunion since 2009 being pipped to tickets by kids who were watching cbeebies in 2009. They have very different connections to the band. But you rightly can't police who gets a ticket.

Covidwoes · 31/08/2024 10:52

"If you wasn't" means they have zero credibility from me! 😂😂

Squirrelsnut · 31/08/2024 10:54

By that reckoning, anyone under about 70 can't like the Beatles, Elvis or The Doors.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 31/08/2024 10:55

That rules out most classical music…

Agree on “If you wasn’t…” I’m no dictionary snob but I’d stop listening after that.

bostonchamps · 31/08/2024 10:56

I know it's not the done thing to mention grammar on here but 'if you wasn't' sets my teeth on edge, and I'd pay no attention to anyone who says it.

Ineedaholidayagain · 31/08/2024 10:56

I'm a blur fan, we'll take all new fans! 🤣

MyNoseSmells · 31/08/2024 10:57

The opinion of anyone with grammar like that means very little to me.

Although that's 95% of Oasis fans so I'm not surprised this post has cropped up today.

sunseaandsoundingoff · 31/08/2024 11:08

I don't really understand that "Chloe from Stockport wants to hear Wonderwall live" thing.

Surely that's literally why everyone is going, to hear Wonderwall live.

BunnyLake · 31/08/2024 11:14

Well I don’t think I’d be paying heed to anyone who said ‘you wasn’t’.

SecondStarOnTheRight · 31/08/2024 11:15

The grammar error is my own doing, just to make everyone aware! The other students at my school were more concerned with wrecking and disrupting the room than letting us learn. 👍🏻

I'm not an Oasis fan by any means, but I do like some of their songs. Music can have different meanings for different people and my parents had an influence on the music I like. It just annoys me that just because some people are younger it means you can't be a fan! I'd rather see a bunch of teenagers enjoying Oasis than see them listen to some of the awful music that's around nowadays.

Just to put the other side, there is something different about having been there back in the 90s. Which doesn't mean you can't be a fan if you were born this century, but I can understand that feeling of 'You weren't there'.

Guavafish1 · 31/08/2024 11:26

Just to generate publicity

Yeah who cares about seven-ish albums worth of songs, right. Just play Wonderwall over and over Hmm

SecondStarOnTheRight · 31/08/2024 12:08

Don't get me wrong I completely understand that fans from the 90s have waited years for this but at the same time there will be fans who have never had the opportunity to see them before.

I'm a fan of the Beatles. They broke up years before I was even born.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 31/08/2024 12:38

No more Glenn Miller for me then!

Anonym00se · 31/08/2024 12:40

My DD has dreamed about this day all her life. She’s 20, and an Oasis superfan. She can play every single Oasis song on guitar, even obscure tracks from the later albums. It pisses me off that people think she doesn’t deserve her ticket because of her age. She got a ticket this morning, but I didn’t. I’m gutted, but over the moon for her at the same time.

FuzzyPuffling · 31/08/2024 13:22

Oh bugger..
Sorry Mozart.
