Help settle a discussion between between me and my husband.
I think scraping your cutlery on your plate is the equivalent of licking your plate.. The foods gone, no need for all of the scraping to get every last morsel of food in your gob!
He thinks my intolerance to food noises is getting out of hand.
I will admit I've always been sensitive to people chewing/slurping but regardless I still believe scraping is bad table manners, anyone else, or am I really being unreasonable?

  • For context we have had chicken salad for dinner, he had finished but was scraping mayonnaise left on the plate onto his fork.

That clicking noise the PS games controller makes. All summer long. Maddening. Ugh.

gamerchick · 26/08/2024 18:52

I can't stand it either OP. Eating, scraping and licking of knife. Husband used to lick his knife until I couldn't stand it anymore. He doesn't do it now.

I can't do drills. They properly upset me to the point of tears if I can't escape them. No idea why it's such a strong reaction.

ouch321 · 26/08/2024 18:52

People making that awful honking sound when they blow their nose. So common.

Modified cars

Motorbikes

Loud adverts

Noisy children

Drilling

Lots of stuff.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 26/08/2024 18:52

Emery boards
Fans

Both of them just set my teeth on edge. Emery boards particularly.

sleepwithblanket · 26/08/2024 18:36

Chewing.

Also, that sniff. Often by men which comes from their toes. A hacking sniff. It’s utterly disgusting and can often be accompanied by a spit.

That made my stomach flip 😝

imverynosey · 26/08/2024 18:58

Hand dryers irritate me. And motor bikes

imverynosey · 26/08/2024 18:58

AmandaHoldensLips · 26/08/2024 18:35

Men sniffing like they don't know what a tissue it.
Blow your firkin nose for gods sake.

And this too yes

I run away from hand-dryers.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 26/08/2024 19:01

Chewing

magpies and seagulls

Blanketpolicy · 26/08/2024 19:07

Spouses get more and more irritating as they age!

Dh slices his food like he is trying to cut through my lovely Denby plates, then the knife slips with the pressure and squeals across the plate.

I constantly need to tell him to eat with his mouth closed (might have something to do with the dental bridge he has but I still don't want to hear and see it!)

He walks across the hard floors in the house dragging his feet, so it is like a shuffle..........

He is heavy handed in the kitchen so oven, fridge doors sound like they are being slammed shut, or mugs put down on counter tops, by an angry person all the time.

He also.............breathes 🙈 really loudly while we are watching TV. Drives me nuts.

Other non-dh noises that I can't deal with is metal on metal, the worst is sharping kitchen knives, dh needs to do it with the kitchen door shut and I sit in the living room with my fingers in my ears until he is done.

I am sure I annoy him just as much!!!!! 🤣

Mum? That you?

Plate scraping!! My partner has started doing this. Scraping every morsel of food onto their knife and licking it. It’s disgusting!

Maddy70 · 26/08/2024 19:20

Windchimes...

billysboy · 26/08/2024 19:20

Chewing loudly or eating with their mouth open
eating any meat from a bone , just wrong

PolePrince55 · 26/08/2024 19:26

Noisy eating 👊🤬😤

KreedKafer · 26/08/2024 19:30

That piercing scream that little kids do just for the sake of it is absolutely unbearable. Also kids doing a whiny voice.

Someone chewing gum is also an awful noise. Much worse than chewing actual food, for some reason.

Also - and this might be a somewhat niche noise nuisance - the noise the self-scan thing makes when you release it to start shopping in Sainsbury’s fucking enrages me.

TigerRag · 26/08/2024 19:34

Everything mentioned in this thread

Car alarms

NeelyOHara1 · 26/08/2024 19:38

Any noise that could be uninflected on the majority by the use of headphones.

Portakalkedi · 26/08/2024 19:39

Noisy eating
Sniffing
People loudly chewing gum
Dogs barking
Next door's kids who scream non-stop every minute they're outside - as if it's a constant daily competition to see who can scream the loudest. It's the kind of noise that goes right through you, but never mind all the neighbours as long as the little darlings can express themselves ... wtf happened to parenting?

AgileGreenSeal · 26/08/2024 19:39

ND here too, and I suspect I have misophonia too. I also have tinnitus.

I cannot abide (to the point of tears at times)

  • repetitive noises eg dog yapping, clock ticking, windscreen wipers etc
  • helicopters (I have PTSD from living in Belfast during the Troubles)
  • blue light sirens (ditto above)
  • loud unexpected noises (ditto above)
  • people chewing, sniffing etc
  • children shouting, whinging
  • people tapping/ drumming on desk etc

PerkyMintDeer · 26/08/2024 19:10

Mum? That you?

Can you have a word with your da and tell him to stop it?

If you are not my dc, then I'm sure your mum will still appreciate it! 🤣

SpeculatingRooks · 26/08/2024 19:42

My sister used to bite wool in front of me and it makes a nasty squeaky sound, it used to make me cry and I still can bearly think about it!

HeyMicky · 26/08/2024 19:42

Plate scraping
All chewing and slurping noises
Licking fingers
People who don't close their lips over crunchy foods - fine that I will her some crunch, not fine that I hear it echo around your gob as you take a bite. Also don't throw crisps into your mouth from several inches way
Whistling, usually old men in supermarkets
Tinny music from headphones especially repetitive bass
Phone clicks
Gulping drinks
Anyone saying "ah" after a drink
Sniffing
People who don't pick up their feet when they walk
Gum popping
Dogs licking themselves
Dry feet rubbing together
Drunken hooting in pub gardens
Giant unnecessary man sneezes

Basically everyone can get in the bin

Jeezitneverends · 26/08/2024 19:45

People (generally male) who are incapable of walking in sliders or flip flops without scuffing the heels LIFT YOUR BLOODY FEET!!

Plate scraping!! My partner has started doing this. Scraping every morsel of food onto their knife and licking it. It’s disgusting!

I know! I just shouted at my husband (hence the thread) The plates bloody empty.. Give it up!!
Glad I'm not the only one who feels this strongly.
Like others have said, the sniffing drives me insane too, we've been married for over 10 years and I swear this is all new behaviour. Although motorbikes never used to bother me and they do now, maybe it's me thats changed.
