On thread comments rather than just the author of the comment?

I’m not sure why this is not viewable to everybody but reckon it could be really useful.

Never in the history of AIBU have I seen an OP or a particularly rude or argumentative poster EVER admit they are BU but I sometimes wish a comment which gets loads of thanks might just sow a seed 😆

OP posts:
Sethera · 27/08/2024 11:30

cry about the thanks I haven’t got

That really should be a song lyric.

Agapornis · 27/08/2024 11:31

I'm deliberately thanking way more posters than usual on this thread 😂

DadJoke · 27/08/2024 11:37

I like the current system. It’s especially good in the gender critical bear pit where there are very few people who support trans rights willing to post but multiple thanks if you do.

'Support trans rights' eh? Or hate women. We know the internet is full of misogynistic arseholes who Like the shit out of hating women. Again, just because it's popular, doesn't make it right. Andrew Tate is popular.

Starlingexpress · 26/08/2024 21:31

You care enough to comment 😁

I’m curious that’s why I commented, it’s very clear you and some other posters want people to know or see the thanks you get, like likes on insta or Facebook.

but who gives a shit really? Do you really need that much validation?

Soretoothfairy · 27/08/2024 11:47

Starlingexpress · 27/08/2024 10:39

Somebody clearly doesn’t get many thanks 😉

Good grief, are you 12?

I wish there was a 'no thanks' button

I agree I was posting on a thread recently and multiple people where telling me nobody agrees with me and how I should stop posting and go away etc but at the same time multiple people where pressing the thanks button. For context all I was saying is a person's mental health is more important then any job and a page full of teachers disagreed with me and lost their shit, I still stand by my comments.

I completely agree with your comment.

You think I am the only one who does this?

I know that you're not, but I also know that you're in the minority.

I'm not just sticking a finger in the air and guessing. The forum I run gets about 5 million hits a month (admittedly a fraction of this place's traffic), and I've had open dialogue with other similarly-sized forums for years; taken as a whole, the membership of forums has a very well-defined and predictable set of behaviours and reactions, and this is repeated across all forums above a few tens of thousands of members, across all demographics and topics.

That's the difference. You're talking about personal experience of yourself and maybe a couple of other people and having a guess at extrapolating it on the assumption that most people are like you (a common fallacy). I'm talking about what I know about aggregated behaviour across hundreds of thousands of people, accumulated over a couple of decades.

Soretoothfairy · 27/08/2024 11:47

No I’m engaging in a light hearted thread where so far, people have managed to refrain from being assholes with name calling. You’re taking this all very seriously 😉

Yes I agree this is one area it would be really useful. Like many I don't have the energy to put up with the reaction to posting in that section but will thank those who do, and often get multiple thanks when I post (and then regret it).

ArabellaScott · 27/08/2024 14:14

noblegiraffe · 26/08/2024 11:51

Because it would gameify MN. MN is far better for not having public likes and follows and posters having 'status'.

Yep.

StarryDance · 27/08/2024 10:21

Anyone could say they are an expert. I take the 'lawyer/docter/Social worker etc here' with a huge pinch of salt.

Yeah me too. I'm a member of a regulated profession and I never comment on anything related to it other than careers advice. No way I'm risking my professional standing by giving advice on MN!

Oh, when it no longer suits your point of view you don't want to guess. So what was your excuse when you implied that I am the only poster who votes without participating further in the discussion most of the time?

I'll make a polll right now and then we can know for certain just how "special" I am.

MRAs, incels, GC people and Andrew Tate are all united in hating trans women. Only GC people make it their whole personality.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/08/2024 16:54

You're the one that couldn't help yourself on a thread about a Thanks button so...

I didn't imply that at all. I was outright saying that extrapolating your own personal experience and motivations to everybody around you is a massive logical fallacy.

Or...are you trying to suggest that you know more about running large social media websites than people who actually run large social media websites? Because that would be...quite something.

I am suggesting you actually read what you comment on. There is no need to guess or extrapolate. I made a poll testing my theory. We'll have the results in 7 days.

We're not mentally 12, which social media has turned all the public likes, validation and admiration seekers into. MN is the last vestige of non-social media-esque online space that i know and it's why I'm still here. Once the competition goes public to prove who has the most likes, followers and bandwagon members, it will turn to the same shit everywhere else.

The juvenile giddy claims of "I have 20 likes", "I had 100 likes", "I have lots and lots, so many likes me, tee hee" just shows where we'd be headed if anyone could see them. It doesn't add anything useful to be public as it's been shown everywhere else.

This. Who, on Planet Reality, worries about how many claps and thanks they have on the net? 🤷‍♀️

I think ‘worried’ is a bit of a stretch. It’s been an interesting ( and mostly well mannered) exchange of views. I don’t have a clue about the overall site related stuff but realise now my perspective is overly simplistic.

You'll get...maybe a couple of hundred people responding at one point in time.

I have data on hundreds of thousands of people over at least a decade.

The fact that you think your poll outweighs that is really quite hilarious.
