On thread comments rather than just the author of the comment?

I’m not sure why this is not viewable to everybody but reckon it could be really useful.

Never in the history of AIBU have I seen an OP or a particularly rude or argumentative poster EVER admit they are BU but I sometimes wish a comment which gets loads of thanks might just sow a seed 😆

Because a lot of posters on here act like children and there is not the maturity level to handle it

Starlingexpress · 26/08/2024 13:16

MissEsmeWatson · 26/08/2024 11:56

Oh another thing, it stops pages full of replies of "I agree".

I don’t agree 😉

Doesn't the same apply to the voting system? If you are hiding one, but everyone can see the other, what's the point?

But you can only have polls on the OP, and it's supposed to be a poll not a show of public appreciation. Some people use it that way (e.g. 'WIBU to stand up to the racist bully attacking an old lady on the bus?') but there's no point on having a poll 'what's the better biscuit, chocolate digestive or chocolate hobnob?' if people can't see the results.

It's optional whether you add a poll to a thread.

The votes are anonymous, unlike the thanks.

They only apply to the OP.

The thrust is different - on AIBU it's usually a straightforward agree/disagree, which isn't the same as thanks (or 'like' if you interpret it thus). Other polls generally ask for a choice between options, such as baby names.

soonandsoforth · 26/08/2024 13:18

I prefer it to be private.

I agree it just turns into a contest. Even on this thread, there's already "I've had 40/ 100" etc. It would also just encourage pile-ons and probably get more threads deleted.

Wanna know how many I’ve had? 😆

Interesting points-interesting the poll doesn’t reflect the general sentiment. Human nature eh?

stopthepigeonstopthepigeon · 26/08/2024 13:21

There are the polls remember. They give a good indication of whether people agree with the OP or not. With people who are replying I don’t think it matters so much how many people agree with them.

It rarely does tbh. I think the poll reflects what lurkers think rather than what the handful of people involved in the thread discussion think.

Not even slightly. When it comes down to it, the value in a forum (both financially and in terms of intangibles like the value to its members) is in the content that people contribute to it.

A poll can only be created on a new thread - which, by definition, is inviting more people to submit content to the site.

A "Like"-alike button does the opposite - it allows the one clicking the button to respond publicly without adding anything of value to the site, and it encourages the author to write more nonsense that gets them more likes.

It's the single biggest reason that Facebook is an absolute waste of time now; everything's designed to keep people on the post-like-post-like merry-go-round.

DebtFreeHopeful · 26/08/2024 13:30

I already feel inadequate with people saying they had 40-100 thanks. I've actually turned it off so I don't get notifications of thanks and can't work out how to turn it back on. TBF I was happy before I was thanked so I'm still happy now.

People don't get thanks for writing nonsense!

I’d argue that they absolutely do-it’s probably what emboldens some more 😑

Its fucking pointless seeing your own thanks and that all. What is it supposed to do other than blow smoke up your own arris?

EatingHealthy · 26/08/2024 14:07

Can the op see which comments on the thread they created have likes?

I know I use it to mean "I agree" when I don't actually have anything new to add to the conversation so I do think it would be useful for the op to be able to see e.g. if there are are ten comments agreeing, and a single comment disagreeing, but the single comment disagreeing has 50 'thanks' vs only a couple of thanks for the agreeing posts, that tells the op something very different to the message they get just being able to see the posts.

The votes are anonymous, too. I can't see who gave me a thanks vote. I can only see that I have thanks. The Poll is the same. I can't see who voted how, but I can see who created the poll and how many votes there are.

I can argue the same for thanks. If you want them to be hidden you can also send the poster a PM with your thanks. But there is not much point having thanks under a post if only the poster can see them.

Not really. I rarely feel like creating a poll, but I vote on plenty. On most polls I vote I don't even leave a comment. So it's not enticing me to create more content for the site and I am sure that a lot of posters are like me.

And voting is also accomplished through just one click.

You can see who has thanked you by clicking the thanks icon - I've thanked your post so you can try?

Edit: I mean the thanks
