To wish that everybody could see the total number of ‘Thanks’

On thread comments rather than just the author of the comment?

I’m not sure why this is not viewable to everybody but reckon it could be really useful.

Never in the history of AIBU have I seen an OP or a particularly rude or argumentative poster EVER admit they are BU but I sometimes wish a comment which gets loads of thanks might just sow a seed 😆

Why? It's not Facebook as long as the poster receives a thanks I don't see why it should matter.

Do thanks only work for the web version?

I get emails to say I've been thanked but I always use the app on my phone and have never seen an option to thank a poster for their comment or to check if one of my posts has any thanks.

I got 14 thanks once - don’t see them normally as I usually can’t find my original post. And emails are directed to a folder not visible le on my phone

We're not mentally 12, which social media has turned all the public likes, validation and admiration seekers into. MN is the last vestige of non-social media-esque online space that i know and it's why I'm still here. Once the competition goes public to prove who has the most likes, followers and bandwagon members, it will turn to the same shit everywhere else.

The juvenile giddy claims of "I have 20 likes", "I had 100 likes", "I have lots and lots, so many likes me, tee hee" just shows where we'd be headed if anyone could see them. It doesn't add anything useful to be public as it's been shown everywhere else.

If there were to be visible ”thanks” I think there should also be visible “no thanks” as well. I think is fair enough voice what you disagree with other posters about but clicking a visible like with no comment feels like just shouting “booo” from the sidelines.

Another good thing about it being hidden is that we could claim any number of likes/thanks we want and no one will know. See, silver lining.

And if you want to agree with a post, but have the OP see it (because it's useful advice) or for your "vote" to "count" in a debate, you have to do the annoying "This!" thing or similar. I think showing numbers is fine.
