You have friends over for two nights — does the hoover get brought out at all?

Just that really.

Curious as I always whip the cordless around when we have people over. We have a dog who isn’t a shedder but her treats can be crumbly (she often moves from her bed where she should eat them). I like the house to feel fresh. I would probably flash mop the hard floors as well but only if friends are not up/out. Wouldn’t do it in front of them for some reason.

I will probably sound nuts but I genuinely get the cordless out 3/4 times a day. I do a ten min hoover in the morning (all floors) and then just whip out the Shark for 30 seconds or so when I see a mess throughout the day. I wfh.

I’m not confident people don’t mind. I just know I’m not being obtuse about when I choose to hoover.

Just curious if I’m in the minority of people who hoover when they have guests.

Edited

You said you know the temperature in the room and hoover when they are upstairs ,so I assumed you meant ,you pick your time and there are no issues. What do your guests do to make you feel its an issue, your responses to people's posts make it sound like you are OK with what you do.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 24/08/2024 16:09

I used to have a clean, tidy house where the decor was in a good state. I don't now. We hoover up when we get around to it - usually every few days - and sweep crumbs off the kitchen floor when things get spilt or knocked over, but only when any visitors have gone. It feels rude otherwise.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 24/08/2024 16:13

Goodness no!
I clean before guests arrive. Apart from that I pretty much only properly clean/dust/hoover about once a month/6 weeks - when I can see dirt basically. In between times it really doesnt need cleaning unless one of us drops something messy etc.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 24/08/2024 16:16

The hoover only comes out on Fridays and Mondays when the cleaner comes 😂

Tbf, the amount of times I need to visit the toilet due to needing a wee or with my IBS, probably spend more time there than I do hoovering. And I'm probably one of those that spends 5 days a year hoovering.
We're happy. Let us hoover, and "waste our life" 🤣😂

Edited

Absolutely, each to their own and why change if you’re happy with it. Personally though I can’t imagine lying on my deathbed age 90 and being thankful that I spent a whole year of my life hoovering.

HelpMeGetThrough · 24/08/2024 16:27

I've had the cordless out a couple of times today. I hoover the house top to bottom every day and then downstairs again in the evening, kitchen maybe three times a day.

Pretty sure I either have OCD or I'm a total clean freak, not sure which.

Nothing wrong in my eyes and everyone enjoys a clean house.

Mu total hoovering time rac hey can’t be more than 20/25 mins a day. This “you’re wasting your life hoovering” isn’t exactly true.

That's a lot of time! I probably spend that amount cleaning daily in total

It sounds as though too many people in your household take you for granted and treat you as a skivvy. If there’s enough mess being made for the whole house to need vacuuming every day, the whole downstairs twice, and the kitchen three times, then there’s a lazy OH not clearing up after himself, and children who could do with learning to help out a bit.

Silversprings45 · 24/08/2024 16:42

Yes. I hoover around 6 times a day on an average day. X2 dogs and X3 children.

I do near enough the same.
By no means is my DP lazy, he helps out an awful lot and works FT. And my children also do help out!
Crazy assumptions there.

HelpMeGetThrough · 24/08/2024 16:46

@ComtesseDeSpair crazy thing is, the house is never dirty and nobody takes me for granted at all, especially my OH.

For some reason, I just like a super clean house.

I'm the "him OH" who is doing it.

How many of the husbands of women who vacuum multiple times a day on this thread are doing similar chores multiple times a day, I wonder? How many men do we have cleaning the bathroom every morning and evening, or doing four lots of washing up?

LOL. I cannot speak for other women, but my DP cooks more than me, he's the better cook and enjoys it.
He washes up daily, sometimes 4 times a day if needs doing or tthere's odd bits in the bowl. He also does a wash here and there. He baths the kids, he also hoovers at least once a day too. He will clean the bathrooms on the odd occasion, but overall, I like to clean and take lead in that, it is also my job outside of this house.
He works a lot more hours than me, and in a very demanding job. He's a good egg on top of that and I appreciate it 😊

That’s great, good for him, exactly as he should. But let’s not pretend that he represents the majority of men, who certainly aren’t busying themselves repeating household tasks several times a day to make sure all household labour is firmly equal.

I'm fully aware he doesn't represent the majority of men. But also, let's not make assumptions that just because us women - (as you've assumed other PP's here are women, who claim to hoover a lot) - have lazy children, and DP's and H's, and are treated as skivvys 😊

Yep, I do the bathroom and the kitchen every day. I'm immunosuppressed, so they have to be extremely clean. That's on me to do, as it's down to me it has to be done that often.

Washing up, we swap around each day with washing and wiping.

If the house is never actually dirty but you’re still vacuuming it all over several times a day then you’re probably, as you suggested in your post, correct about it being OCD, as it sounds like compulsive behaviour rather than based in reality. Many people with OCD reach the stage where they think they’re happy when they’re doing their routines, when they’re anything but. Worth thinking about whether you might fall into that group

Well, I can't speak for anyone else, but between us, we definitely do 4x lots of washing up a day - because we don't have a dishwasher and our kitchen is absolutely tiny. We just don't have the space to leave all the dishes sitting there all day.

Our bathroom gets sprayed and wiped round after showers too, because we'd both rather spend a few minutes a day doing that than leaving it all until the weekend.

Horses for courses.

Oceangreyscale · 24/08/2024 17:25

No. I know people like this and it makes me feel so unwelcome in their home. Like I'm just messing it up by being there and should be cleaning up after myself more.

YapYapMeow · 24/08/2024 17:25

If it needs it, then I would, or my partner would or even one of my friends.

WakingUpInBlood · 24/08/2024 17:44

No, I wouldn’t unless there was a specific mess needing cleaned up. I think I would also be slightly surprised if I was staying with someone for two days and they kept whipping out the hoover. I would have to be very careful about crumbs etc.

Knickerknack · 24/08/2024 17:55

My friend does this. Sort of like using the brush and pan but more thorough. Yanbu

GreatMistakes · 24/08/2024 18:00

It's absolutely fine. My robot is on a schedule and id only cancel it if it was being loud over conversation or TV.

Agree with you that it's far easier to clean on sight than let it build up. It also means you aren't picking up crumbs and hair etc on your feet or slippers and putting it all over the sofa.

Mil3nnial · 24/08/2024 18:43

If there are crumbs or mess on the floor then yes I'd sweep it hoover it
