You have friends over for two nights — does the hoover get brought out at all?

Just that really.

Curious as I always whip the cordless around when we have people over. We have a dog who isn’t a shedder but her treats can be crumbly (she often moves from her bed where she should eat them). I like the house to feel fresh. I would probably flash mop the hard floors as well but only if friends are not up/out. Wouldn’t do it in front of them for some reason.

I will probably sound nuts but I genuinely get the cordless out 3/4 times a day. I do a ten min hoover in the morning (all floors) and then just whip out the Shark for 30 seconds or so when I see a mess throughout the day. I wfh.

I'd say your dog is getting too many treats if you need to hoover 4 times a day. Especially when you have guests over because you can bet your perma-hoovering makes them feel uncomfortable

Edited

Did you read the bit where I said I probably only hoover once a day in front of guests? Just to restore order from the night before

Depends on if there is enough stuff on the floor to disturb me. I had to last time when sister in law and her family came over and they were making a mess. They even broke our shower hose that I had just installed two weeks earlier. And disturbed our night sleep so my DH told me we are sending them to an Airbnb next time. 😁 any other guests we have the floor usually stays ok for days.

ClipTap · 24/08/2024 12:37

Do you mean hoover while they're actually there

Oh god definitely not

albalass · 24/08/2024 12:37

Are those doing their floors multiple times a day, or even every day, working full time? I don't get home until after 6.30pm on week days - evenings are busy enough without adding daily floor cleaning to the list. Agree with others that life is too short - I can definitely make better use of my time than excessive cleaning. I do have child, but no pets so I guess that makes a difference as to how much cleaning is necessary.

Pascha · 24/08/2024 12:39

I vacuum before guests and then just to clear up messes.

I'm not a vacuum every day person though. Only the kitchen floor.

I wfh full time: No kids. Plenty of time for me to tidy up after myself.

Not usually, but we do have two small children (6 and 2) so if there is a significant mess made by them after a meal then I would, or just use the little hand-held for a spot clean under the table/chairs for example.

Portfun24 · 24/08/2024 12:42

Yeah, hoover, brush/mop the floors every day regardless who is there.

Yeah but I can read the temperature in the room. We’ll hardly be in the middle of a film when I abruptly get the hoover out. Chances are when I’m hoovering my guests won’t even be downstairs.

We whiz the cordless over the kitchen every day, so yes.

Part time currently. Have worked full time and still been the same though. I'll not always move things right out and about to hoover behind and under every time I do get the hoover out.. but definitely go over all visible flooring and stairs.

LouH5 · 24/08/2024 12:47

I am with you OP!

I usually run the hoover about twice a day, as we also have wooden floors and every crumb shows doesn’t it! We also have a black cat so her hair does show up quite a bit.

If I was staying at someone’s for two days and they got the hoover out a couple of times, I’d literally think nothing I’d it. If you’re worried they’ll think it’s because they’ve made a mess and they’ll feel awkward, when you get it out just make a light joke, something like “this bloody dog, getting his hairs and treat crumbs everywhere!”

whatsappdoc · 24/08/2024 12:49

If I was a guest I'd think spot hoovering more intrusive than a broom. There's something so annoying about that whine.

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 24/08/2024 12:49

KnittedCardi · 24/08/2024 12:33

How does it get so dirty??????

That's what I want to know! Do people just throw all their litter on the floor or something? I wear shoes in my house and have a cat, but I only vacuum about once a week downstairs and less often upstairs, I sweep the kitchen floor maybe once in between and wash it about every 2 or 3 weeks. Even when I had 2 children at home it was about the same and my floors didn't look dirty, but then I don't have a fainting fit if there's a crumb on the floor.
I wouldn't dream of hoovering or mopping when I have guests, it seems incredibly fussy and unwelcoming, almost giving the impression they're adding to your housework burden.
I never understand all these excessive cleaners, it seems such a sad waste of time when they could be doing something so much more interesting.

Doingmybest12 · 24/08/2024 12:50

Why are you asking OP. You seem happy with what you are doing and you feel confident your guests don't mind, so it's all good .

JaxiiTaxii · 24/08/2024 12:50

I would properly clean before they arrived & probably sweep & quickly hoover the kitchen floor in the evening as part of tidying up as it shows every crumb.

But no, I wouldn't hoover the lounge etc. while they're here.

Yes, I work full time but I have three children, a cat and dog - so want the floors clean. It literally takes 15 mins.

Sizeofthatcroc · 24/08/2024 12:52

My family come to stay for 1-2 weeks and it drives me nuts as my Dm always looks uncomfortable when I start to tidy/clean and I can’t easily hoover and mop with everyone sat around 😫I wait until they go out or have the cleaners come extra, which my Dm complains about too as she says she has to tidy all her clothes away etc in the room she stays in-so cheeky 🙈

Shibr · 24/08/2024 12:55

I can’t imagine being that messy you need to hoover four times a day?! Why so many crumbs, are you constantly snacking? A bib might be easier and you’d save on electricity!

Driced · 24/08/2024 12:57

I’m not confident people don’t mind. I just know I’m not being obtuse about when I choose to hoover.

Just curious if I’m in the minority of people who hoover when they have guests.

OP posts:
RosesAndHellebores · 24/08/2024 12:57

No. The cleaner hoovers and mops once a week. Random drops and spills are tidied up. The cats get their treats at the garden door.

Raincoatsandwellies · 24/08/2024 12:59

We're the same as you OP. Our hoover is permanently out, to the point it's annoying but with a family or 6, plus pets and wooden floors we hoover all of downstairs probably 3 times everywhere, and 5-6 times it comes out for a messy patch under the table or where food has been prepared/eaten.

Upstairs not so much, but we don't allow food upstairs which helps.

Never really considered it to be excessive, if we don't hoover all day our socks would be disgusting.

pinkspeakers · 24/08/2024 13:00

Probably. But only because almost the only people I am likely to have stay for a couple of days are my sisters and their families. So we are 12 people total, including kids, and the kitchen/dining area look messy pretty quickly.

If it was just a couple of adults, then probably not unless something particularly messy happened. When it's just us I normally only vacuum once a week.

DebateWithMoi · 24/08/2024 13:01

I do, I like a spotless home. My friends know that's just me and how I am, doesn't make them any more uncomfortable than I am if I go somewhere and come away with grubby soles on my socks.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 24/08/2024 13:01

Yeah I hoover the downstairs floors every day, often twice in the kitchen because I have young children who get crumbs / food everywhere
