You have friends over for two nights — does the hoover get brought out at all?

Just that really.

Curious as I always whip the cordless around when we have people over. We have a dog who isn’t a shedder but her treats can be crumbly (she often moves from her bed where she should eat them). I like the house to feel fresh. I would probably flash mop the hard floors as well but only if friends are not up/out. Wouldn’t do it in front of them for some reason.

I will probably sound nuts but I genuinely get the cordless out 3/4 times a day. I do a ten min hoover in the morning (all floors) and then just whip out the Shark for 30 seconds or so when I see a mess throughout the day. I wfh.

That's what I want to know! Do people just throw all their litter on the floor or something? I wear shoes in my house and have a cat, but I only vacuum about once a week downstairs and less often upstairs, I sweep the kitchen floor maybe once in between and wash it about every 2 or 3 weeks. Even when I had 2 children at home it was about the same and my floors didn't look dirty, but then I don't have a fainting fit if there's a crumb on the floor.
I wouldn't dream of hoovering or mopping when I have guests, it seems incredibly fussy and unwelcoming, almost giving the impression they're adding to your housework burden.
I never understand all these excessive cleaners, it seems such a sad waste of time when they could be doing something so much more interesting.

No, we don't throw our litter on the floor. We have 3 children, 2 cats. Our lounge joins on to our garden, so that alone, if the children are out there playing they will bring in whatever.
I don't have a fainting fit or any sort of fit if the floor is dirty, or during guests, or when the kids are playing with toys etc. I will and can wait unless it's some sort of massive spill then I'll whack it out. I tend to pull everything out and hoover behind once a week, but general going over the bits of floors you can see/are used, I do hoover around 3-4 times a day. Mop once a day, last thing in the evening.
If we're out for a day, or I'm not at home for the majority of the day, then it would be 2 times max, one morning, one before bed time/early evening along with the mop.
We don't expect you to understand, so it's ok ☺️

All the people with crumbs all over all your floors, do you wander around eating, is that why there are crumbs everywhere? I eat at a table or if having a biscuit or something away from the table I use a plate, always have done even when my children lived here, it really helps to reduce mess.

I’m not confident people don’t mind. I just know I’m not being obtuse about when I choose to hoover.

Just curious if I’m in the minority of people who hoover when they have guests.

Edited

Everyone’s answers are going to depend on their household makeup. People with no children or pets aren’t going to be vacuuming and mopping anywhere near as frequently as people whose children shed glitter and rice crispies, or people with dogs which track mud and hair and slobber around. It doesn’t mean the former people are dirty or slovenly, nor that the latter are an odd minority.

Universalsnail · 24/08/2024 13:08

I hover atleast once sometimes twice a day whether I have guests round or not.

Cuwins · 24/08/2024 13:10

We don't have visitors to stay over and I definitely wouldn't when someone was here for the day (baring a major mess like a glass being dropped)- except my sister but she isn't really a visitor as she is always in and out, she would probably be handed the hoover!
However even with a 2 year old I don't hoover everyday, Flat is laminate floors except carpet in bedrooms.
Robot vacuum goes on average every other day, big hoover about once a week in each room (don't tend to do the whole lot at once) and same for the speed mop on the hard floors.

gamerchick · 24/08/2024 13:14

I don't because cordless Hoover's are shit. Harry does a much better job so you don't have to do it multiple times a day and we're not a particularly messy household.

AuntieMarys · 24/08/2024 13:14

We hoover once a week. Maybe sweep kitchen floor twice.
But we are adults and don't drop food!

Beth216 · 24/08/2024 13:17

No chance.

Ah I see, this is one of those AIBUs where the op doesn't think for a second they are being U and doesn't want to hear from anyone who thinks they are! 😀

itsgettingweird · 24/08/2024 13:28

If you mean hoovering up a small area of crumbs of course I'd do it.

When you said hoover 3/4 times a day it sounded like the whole house.

My whole house gets done twice a week. Small areas get done as and when they are needed.

But we are only 2 adults in the house and even then we are out of it most of the day!

Zerro · 24/08/2024 13:35

Our house gets hoovered once a week. Hoovering daily let alone 4 times a day's is bonkers.
I would probably do the weekly hoover the day before guests were due but certainly not while they were actually here.

StoneTheCrone · 24/08/2024 13:37

Christ No!

Peonies12 · 24/08/2024 13:40

Only if there was a significant mess.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 24/08/2024 13:43

Yes, I vacuum everyday - three cats and a dog here, and it's really obvious if it hasn't been done.

OP everyone thinks you are a crazy lady doing this. You cant argue your madness away. Does this matter - not if you enjoy your hoovering ritual!

eggandchip · 24/08/2024 13:51

I dont own a hoover.

Boredshitless1 · 24/08/2024 13:51

Shibr · 24/08/2024 12:55

I can’t imagine being that messy you need to hoover four times a day?! Why so many crumbs, are you constantly snacking? A bib might be easier and you’d save on electricity!

This🤦‍♀️

SallyWD · 24/08/2024 13:52

I'll hoover before they arrive, not while they're here.

HamSad · 24/08/2024 13:57

I might vacuum four times a month. Four times a day sounds like an unhealthy fixation.

spikeandbuffy24 · 24/08/2024 13:59

No. I probably hoover once or twice a week

Bjorkdidit · 24/08/2024 14:09

Of course not, that's insane.

Plus you do know that the dog would lick the biscuit crumbs up anyway if you gave her a chance.

mindutopia · 24/08/2024 14:12

Before they get here and after they leave.

I only rarely get it out passive aggressively when people are here to make a point about what a mess they are making of my house.

SnapdragonToadflax · 24/08/2024 14:15

The only time I hoovered that much was when my son was crawling and putting everything in his mouth.

Since then (and before then) - fucking hell no! I can cope with a few crumbs on the floor 😂I would feel seriously uncomfortable if my friend was hoovering up behind me. Our floors get hoovered a couple of times a week, and I'll obviously hoover up a big mess if it's going to get walked everywhere otherwise. Family of three, one small child and one cat. House is not a show home, thank god. There's more to life than housework.

MounjaroUser · 24/08/2024 14:15

If I had a dog I'd vacuum a lot more than I do now. As it is now, I vacuum before guests arrive and then only if something's dropped on the floor.
