I've seen about 8 threads in the last 2 days with posters writing ect when they obviously mean etc. I probably am being U but it really does irrationally fucking irritate me!

I need to get out more, yes. I've had two (big) glasses of wine 😂.

So, am I?

The advice about removing the 2nd person is correct, but it was confusingly put.

Maybe it's easier to start with just yourself:

I went to the shop.

When you add Claire it must still make sense:

Claire and I went to the shop.

Now start with the incorrect version:

Me went to the shop.

That sounds wrong, so if you put Claire back in:

Me and Claire went to the shop

It might sound ok but it's wrong.

Yes, that's a simpler way of putting it, thanks.

I work in mental health so people busting out ect tickles me more than most

But l find the lose / loose confusion more annoying

Completely agree. I would never remember various bits like the pluperfect if it wasn't for Latin. Teaching English grammar was so far out of fashion when I was at school.

There was a big push to roll out the Minimus course to primary schools a few years ago.

Everybody should have to learn about the roof falling on on Caecilius i the Cambridge Latin course

Seriously though, I learned so much more about grammar from learning Latin than I was ever taught in English, because it started from an assumption of no knowledge . And went on to a Classics degree, hence my pedantic nature, but it was the one of Boris's ideas i didn't object to, you learn more about your own language by learning the ones that underpin it.

Check your privilege here. Mocking those less educated than you on a forum that you know they will read? Would you say this to anyone’s face? Thought not.

The privilege of a decent eduction should be shared .
Why let people carry on making mistakes ? Are we thinking they are too stupid to learn?

murasaki · 24/08/2024 00:03

I have to say, and this isn't an option available to most kids, I learned more about English grammar from learning Latin than from English lessons at School. I clearly remember the 'who knows what a subjunctive is' question, where Mr C was greeted with 26 blank 12 year old faces. Turns out it's 'if I were you'.

'If I was you' is another one that pisses me off, but I get why it happens. But conditional tense people!

Someone said upthread that they instinctively know what sounds right, and I agree.

I didn't learn Latin (it would have been wasted on me at that age) but I did read and my parents spoke well.

I know that it's "if I were you", but I don't know what the proper names are that explain why.

"If I was you" just sounds wrong.

I wish I had done Latin now though.

Lifeinlists · 24/08/2024 00:13

@Sooka yes, I did wonder if it was a pisstake. For the sake of family harmony,I haven't got round to pointing that one out to my brother!

@verityrosa Sorry about that. Just being a bit technical really. All you need to know is that it's is only ever short for 'it is' (and 'it has'). English has lots of confusing rules!

murasaki · 24/08/2024 00:14

Its a conditional tense. You just got it ingrained in the same way that I don't know why it's similar to.and different from...

But a little broader language education given English is so polyglot wouldn't be a bad thing.

DrunkTinkerbell40s · 24/08/2024 00:15

And discusting rather than disgusting!

murasaki · 24/08/2024 00:18

Conditional tense basically relies on it being a condition , e.g. if I were you I would do that. The condition being you are pretending to be them for the moment. If I were you I'd order the pizza. As I'm me, I'll have the spaghetti.

Very interesting thread without being TOO snarky though, thanks all.

Isittimeformynapyet · 24/08/2024 00:22

The little thing that's been bugging me lately is this.!

     .! or .?

Lot's of people don't read much - I get that - but surely they see advertising?

I do think many people are just very unobservant and don't pay attention.

AutumnLeavesAndSunshineAndRain · 24/08/2024 00:23

Very annoying I agree @IceCreamWoes

Even more annoying is 'USE YOUR WORDS!' What the fuck does that even mean? Who started it? And do people think they're smart and clever when they say it?!!! Angry (Just saw it on a thread and it's wound me up!) 😆

Also, someone saying 'kindly OP.......... ' (followed by something mean and rude!) ARRRRRGGH!!!!!!!!! 😠

Not sure what the point is here?

Is it just a typing error on phones, or something else, I've not seen it on tv? Or should I say on tv.?

Oh, 'kindly OP,' is the the new 'with all due respect'

If you're going to call it out, own it.

murasaki · 24/08/2024 00:33

In irrelevant news, Latin teachers seem to live for ever. Mine was balding and aged when he took my A level class, and is now teaching my niece, and has a Facebook page open for his 50 years at the school. He looks exactly the same as he did in the 90s, which for a.man who went to the pub every lunchtime and snoozed while we watched I Claudius on VHS , but all 15 of us got A grades, is quite impressive. I think they'll have to wheel him out of there.

Sorry, I should have gone to sleep and hour ago.

I just keep seeing that superfluous full stop on here, and was thinking how often exclamation marks are used correctly in advertising so even if people don't read much they ought to have just "absorbed" how to use them.

Could be typos, I guess.

I've got a lot from your posts on this thread - thanks 👍🏼

So should I, and you may well be right, not something I'd considered ,sleep well!

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 24/08/2024 00:37

I avoid using effective and affective because I just don't get them. I've looked at both words, and their meanings, and I still don't get it.

People's spelling or grammar do not 'fucking irritate' me in the slightest, and I'm happy to reveal my weakness.
