I've seen about 8 threads in the last 2 days with posters writing ect when they obviously mean etc. I probably am being U but it really does irrationally fucking irritate me!

I need to get out more, yes. I've had two (big) glasses of wine 😂.

So, am I?

@Jacopo
'Excited' is all over Facebook. It's the new 'Amazing'.
I move in musical circles and the number of people who are excited to be performing at such and such a place and such and such a time has mushroomed in the last six months or so. They're not really excited - unless it's a solo appearance at The Proms or something - but they are looking forward to it, I guess. Or just informing people, to drum up an audience.
A small child arriving at a birthday party is usually excited.

MillicentMama · 24/08/2024 10:10

Just read a post where the OP talked about it being “draftie”, so she had “warn” a jumper 🤦🏼‍♀️ Arrrrrggghhhh

So many of my friends use they’re/there/their incorrectly 🙈

I agree. But it was this new use of excited for instead of excited about that I was puzzled about.

I would be judging so hard if any parent in my DC's class was slagging off the school secretary because of the way she speaks. What utter dicks.

I know. These were high school teachers. Young ones and only a small group of them. Nevertheless, not very nice.

Where the F**K do you get the idea that I took ‘the piss’ out of her? And I didn’t mention ‘friends’ at all. Jesus.

Her speaking made you cringe and she was the butt of all jokes that where clearly being said in your presence. You're not coming across great here.

PS - I see how you might think they were parents. No, this was in the staff room. I don’t want to give the impression that it was relentless joking every day. It was childish really.

I think the fact you think that response is acceptable proves my point. You know what makes me cringe, adults who think their above others, who are bullies and can't understand that others have a different set of circumstances to themselves.

ThePrologue · 24/08/2024 10:28

IceCreamWoes · 23/08/2024 22:03

American, out of interest? I haven't heard anyone else use it.

I still can't say "another think coming though" although I accept it's grammatically correct. I just say another thing coming really quickly so it's ambiguous 😂

This is one of my pet peeves!

It's another think coming!! And one is not preaching to the choir, one is preaching to the converted (because it means you're telling us what we already know/believe, not all of the choir may do so!)

Speaking as someone who has always struggled with literacy years ago at school you were out on the slow table no great support
it can be soul destroying for some smug self righteous twat pointing out your errors

for the life of me I can’t see the need
I think anyone who does this is no better than a bully

I agree. I can pedant with the best of them, but I would never correct someone’s spelling or grammar. I think it’s rude and unkind.

I have no idea who you are where you from the teacher thread and thought a job was more important then a person's health and how horrible the parents and kids where. That's funny if you where because on this thread you've just said how it's the teachers being childish and bullying others.

The little thing that's been bugging me lately is this.!

     .! or .?

Lot's of people don't read much - I get that - but surely they see advertising?

I do think many people are just very unobservant and don't pay attention.

It's a typo; when you select ? or ! on a phone keypad you have to go through the full stop key (short press for full stop, hold to select a range of punctuation) and people are inadvertently doing the short press first

ThePrologue · 24/08/2024 10:43

Emptyandsad · 24/08/2024 00:39

Two I hate:
▪︎ To 'step foot' in a place; it's not 'step foot', it's 'set foot'
▪︎ The creeping americanisms which are becoming common, e.g. "it's not that big of a deal". We always used to say "it's not that big a deal". What is the "of" doing there?

Edited

You 'triggered' me!
not that big of a deal... ARRRRGGHH
and
I'm excited for Christmas/our holiday..
No, you are looking forward to... You can be excited on behalf of a person (The prologues is running in the Olympics, I'm excited for her) but not an inanimate thing

FuzzyPuffling · 24/08/2024 10:44

ErrolTheDragon · 24/08/2024 09:31

While @Emptyandsad is correct about how language evolves, I think mutations which cause a loss of functionality should be resisted if possible.
The purpose of language is for communication, there are some words where altering their meaning can impair this.

Yes, yes and yes again.

I see so many social media posts where the language has been so mangled it is incomprehensible.

And anyone who writes "u" and "ur" needs a slap round the face with a wet kipper.

Legomania · 24/08/2024 10:44

DanglingMod · 24/08/2024 08:55

Yes, when did this one start? I'm secondary and it's only been about the last three years. Suddenly, ALL the children say, "I did it on accident!" (Except those who read a lot.)

It's US phrasing via YouTube

In France grammar is a core course subject in schools (separate from 'French' which is more of a spelling/comprehension and in time, literary course).
So grammar (rules, exception, irregular verbs, tenses) is taught formally from the age of 5/6 years to about 14/15; a long time is devoted to making sure you master your own language. All teachers without exception have impeccable grammar and spelling.
It used to be unusual for anyone to have bad grammar, but things are changing, sadly, for many reasons, but bad spelling or bad grammar will still disqualify you from many jobs or opportunities; it's still a very low bar in selection standards.
Languages are taught in the same way, grammar is separate to the spoken word. English has a vast vocabulary but is grammatically a very simple language - ask almost any foreigner.
I don't know why so many people can't write or speak it properly, but I have noticed that the older generation as a whole - even those from very modest backgrounds - don't seem to have this problem.

I learnt so much about grammar and punctuation from a german lady I worked with!

FuzzyPuffling · 24/08/2024 10:47

Segue, not segway, surely!

I always think of an English teacher colleague telling his class "adverbs are your friends".
