To ask for low calorie lunches I can eat one handed while also doing a lunch duty?

For various reasons, including my current car being on it's last legs, I will be signing up for lunch duty at least twice a week this coming term. I also have at least three stones to lose. As a TA, I have no frees at any point where I can sit down to eat, just my half hour break which I will have to voluntarily give up to do lunch duty. Not my favourite thing to do but two sessions a week will mean another £120 a month which should cover a replacement car.

Please may I have your suggestions of something I can eat one handed while holding a radio in the other and supervising the queue for the toilets? Yes, that right, I became a TA for the untold riches and glamorous life style!
Thanks.

No idea why a poll has been added! People with jobs outside education probably don't get it. If you are a fellow traveller, you know just what I mean.

Would you be allowed soup in a thermal mug with a lid, make it thin enough you can drink.
A wholemeal wrap/ pitta filled with salad and protein that is wrapped carefully.
Mini crustless quiches with lots vegetables.

Anewuser · 22/08/2024 22:29

Well I’m a TA and to be honest don’t really know what you mean.

You want lunch ideas when you can only use one hand?

I’d have a wrap or a bread roll.

DrSeuss · 22/08/2024 22:29

Probably not the soup but the other ideas spin good, thank you.

Can you make sushi? It’s not very difficult and the basic ingredients are both healthy and not expensive. You don’t have to cut rolls into bite size pieces - you can just eat the roll. Or you can cut and eat one-handed.

llamajohn · 22/08/2024 22:33

Just have a protein based smoothie in a travel mug.

Like yoghurt, peanut butter and bananas ..
That kind of thing.

llamajohn · 22/08/2024 22:34

Or just have a bigger breakfast and skip lunch and eat once kids have gone for the day or something

AzureSheep · 22/08/2024 22:36

Could you do something like a sandwich thin, filled with a whole chicken breast and salad? The protein will fill you up and shouldn’t fall apart in your hands if it’s a whole fillet. Or tuna mayo as it should all stick together and not just fall out of the sandwich.

Or, make a load of egg muffins - they’re basically crust less quiches and you can put ham, onion, leek, bacon, hicken, spinach, peppers, whatever you fancy in them.

Stardustmoon · 22/08/2024 22:39

I agree with a protein based shake. I'm a teacher and often have a protein shake for lunch as it means I can carry on working through lunchtime and just sip as needed.

A pitta filled with tuna or prawns mixed with salsa, sweetcorn, red onion, peppers

A normal white roll filled with ham and tomato

pitta with grilled fajita chicken veggies with a tiny bit of low cal mayo mixed with 0%greek youghurt and spices

Frittata of eggs, veg, protein of your choice plenty seasoning and chilli flakes

BLT with bacon medallions

DrSeuss · 22/08/2024 22:42

All sounds great apart from the peanut butter as we are a nut free school.

I use a walkie talkie and would make 2 suggestions - they normally come with a clip on the back which you can temporarily hook either onto your clothes or your lanyard, if you have one. Also you could get an earpiece, meaning you could pop your walkie talkie into your pocket. Both solutions free both hands up for eating.

Warburtons do a lovely wholemeal loaf that has no added sugar and is only 55cals a slice. So with that you could make a lovely chicken salad sandwich using low cal mayo instead of butter, or grated half fat cheddar cheese and chutney or low fat cream cheese with salad. Add some carrots sticks and a piece of fruit. Healthy lunch for about 300-350 cals.

Invisimamma · 22/08/2024 22:56

Cereal bar, you can get more substantial ones that are like a meal replacement, or a protein shake. Maybe add a banana or an apple too.

I always go for the Warburtons tiny bread!

I don't have any food suggestions, but wanted check how many continuous working hours per day this means you're doing? If 6 or more you are legally entitled to a 20 minute break, and your employer needs to make sure you get this.

If less than 6, I'd agree with the person who suggested larger breakfast then eating at the end of the school day.

A sandwich. An apple. A biscuit bar. Basically a regular packed lunch.

CitronellaDeVille · 22/08/2024 23:25

Banana
Apple
Samosa
Sausage roll
Celery stick

MortimerBeQuiet · 22/08/2024 23:25

Huel

Manyshelves · 22/08/2024 23:25

Or do two breakfasts. I like this, keeps me full for ages,

Firenzeflower · 22/08/2024 23:57

A smoothie. Add some oats or you'll be starving.
I like banana, chia, oat milk and berries.

LegoShark · 23/08/2024 00:01

Banana
Nut bar
Apple
A rucksack or cross bag to hold the food

Cobblersorchard · 23/08/2024 00:20

5:2 fasting.

Don’t eat, use the lunch duty days as Fast Days. Eat your 800 calories at breakfast and dinner.

Serencwtch · 23/08/2024 07:25

Slimfast shake & bottle of water.

DrSeuss · 23/08/2024 14:31

Thanks for all the contributions. I went to Home Bargains and bought the smallest available fun of protein powder as I don't know whether I'll like it and a bottle to mix it. I think berries and so obvious be good.
