I've started getting into reading again and now looking for book recommendations. I don't know if it's just me not enjoying reading as much as I used to, but some of the titles I've read/attempted to recently just don't seem to grab my attention and I struggle to get through them.

I'm currently reading People Like Her by Ellery Lloyd. It's ok, but a bit slow.

I prefer mysteries and thrillers.

Please give me some ideas!

Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell.

I absolutely LOVED it

This! I didn't actually think I'd like it but I'd heard so much about it I thought I'd try it. Absolutely adored it. Amazing!

This is embarrassing because it’s a Harry Potter fanfiction but I literally couldn’t put Manacled down.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 22/08/2024 01:52

The last Strike novel, The Running Grave. Probably the longest book I've read but so immersive!

I prefer facts to fiction. Some factual books can be a bit like a thriller as they take you on the journey of those involved.

2000 Miles Together - the story of the largest family to hike the appalachian trail
Ben Crawford with Megan McCracken

You would not imagine a book about going on a long walk would be a page turner, but it is, as you want to know what happens next, who they will meet next, what goes well and what does not. Will they get to the next town, will they get snowed in, will they stop their long walk to do a long run. Will a 7 year old really walk for 2000 miles?

CoffeandTiaMaria · 22/08/2024 06:26

I am Pilgrim
The Paper Palace - I have just finished this, absolutely hooked me!
I prefer non fiction, have just finished Alan Cummings book Not My Father

The Drink Shrink by Zoe McCann
Read it in a day
Hilarious and very relatable

ComeOnThenFanny · 22/08/2024 07:11

I started Strange Sally Diamond last night after reading this thread. Didn't get to sleep until 0130, point proven beautifully 🙄🤣

HamBagelNoCheese · 22/08/2024 08:37

Well, my Waterstones basket just got expensive! Thank you to everyone for their recommendations.

My input...

I've only seen John Marrs mentioned once I think. His books are easy to read and very twisty - I've literally gasped at some twists in his books.

I've also not seen Alice Feeney mentioned. His & Hers was cleverly written and kept me guessing right to the end. I'm still not sure that I've finished thinking about Sometimes I Lie either!

GreenPoppy · 22/08/2024 08:53

Kate Atkinson has a new one at the moment.

I like:

Early Sophie Hannah
Liane Moriarty
Lisa Jewell
Tana French

For non-fiction I can really recommend 'The Many lives of Aunt Munca', a man researching the mysterious life of his aunt-by-marriage. It's really jaw dropping.

This is embarrassing because it’s a Harry Potter fanfiction but I literally couldn’t put Manacled down.

That is because it's SO GOOD. Apparently the author is talking to a mainstream publisher about it as well, since it became so popular - although of course they'll need to change characters etc.

KimberleyClark · 22/08/2024 09:00

Anything by Sophie Hannah, Tess Gerritsen, Harlan Coben, Nicki French, Greg Iles.

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 22/08/2024 12:59

TokyoSushi · 22/08/2024 13:22

Have just downloaded Strange Sally Diamond onto my kindle for my holiday tomorrow, looks great!

downsizedilemma · 22/08/2024 13:31

I just read American Dirt, I actually thought it was a bit trashy but I couldn't put it down! What a page-turner.

Agree with the recommendation of Alive, that's a fantastic non-fiction read

Feelingleftoutagain · 22/08/2024 13:33

The Southern book clubs guide to slaying a vampire

pinklite · 22/08/2024 14:47

I've just remembered another one - How to Murder Your Family by Bella Mackie, I really enjoyed that one last year.

Also: Death of a Bookseller by Alice Slater, loved it, so did a friend I passed it on to.

So many great recommendations on this thread, thanks @pinklite!
