I've started getting into reading again and now looking for book recommendations. I don't know if it's just me not enjoying reading as much as I used to, but some of the titles I've read/attempted to recently just don't seem to grab my attention and I struggle to get through them.

I'm currently reading People Like Her by Ellery Lloyd. It's ok, but a bit slow.

I prefer mysteries and thrillers.

Please give me some ideas!

A Dark Adapted Eye, Barbara Vine.

A fatal inversion, also Barbara Vine. Absolutely gripping.

I love KL Slater, I have all her books on audible, I stay awake to listen for far too long when a new one comes out!
Lisa Jewell
We need to talk about Kevin by Lionel Shriver is my favourite book
Hated the Richard Osman book
Girl with the dragon tattoo trilogy
I like autobiography too, have just re read Peter Kay the sound of laughter funny and interesting
I love John Grisham
Strange Sally Diamond was great

Absolute Power by David Baldacchi. Not a literary great but for suspense and wanting to know what's next, it's unputdownable!!!

RubberyChicken · 21/08/2024 20:05

Lissa Evan's books - funny engaging without being wishy washy!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/08/2024 20:58

How to Avoid the Pitfalls of Superglue.

SquashGnocci · 21/08/2024 21:03

Strange Sally Diamond is an absolute MUST READ. It's brilliant!

Mamaneedsgin · 21/08/2024 21:05

Loved The Maid by Nita Prose, vaguely similar to Eleanor Oliphant.

Favourite book is The Light Between Oceans by M L Stedman.

HelpAGirlOut1234 · 21/08/2024 21:14

I just finished The Perfect Lie by Jo Spain.

I only started it yesterday evening and I honestly finished work 30mins early today so I could finish it... it's a page turner!

Easy to read mystery/thriller type

The Secret History is AMAZING! One of my favourites!

If you enjoyed it, try If We Were Villains by M.L.Rio, you like it!

suburberphobe · 21/08/2024 21:17

Surprisingly, The Woman in Me by Britney Spears.

Horrendous what she went through with her family. Her father with others were basically a thief of her money and manipulated her each and every way of the court system in USA.

I just followed the news on the periphery but I have absolute respect for her how she dealt with it and came out triumphant.

Should be essential reading for all women and girls.

I loved her song "Baby One More Time", then lost track of her apart from the sporadic news but loved the Free Britney movement.

Amazing woman. Especially living your life growing up as a child star.

Thinking she was a "fluffy" star, I have utter respect for her resilience in the face of utter shit.

The Giver of Stars

localnotail · 21/08/2024 21:22

In a Dark Dark Wood by Ruth Ware

Crime thriller. Seriously, could not put it down. Really, really good

localnotail · 21/08/2024 21:23

Also, anything by H P Lovecraft.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 21/08/2024 21:28

R.R. Haywood The Undead series.

There are about 26 books in it now and I read them the day they come out.

Opened the first one (Day One), didn't stop until I'd got to the end of the series at the time and now I read them the day they come out.

Available in Kindle Unlimited.

They are Zombie Apocalypse books, based in England and my favourite Zompoc of all time.
Funny, brutal, gory and clever with engaging characters.

Have now also read everything else he has written and never been disappointed.

ComeOnThenFanny · 21/08/2024 21:28

Another vote for Wrong Place Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister. Absolutely gripping.

Anything by Lisa Jewell.

Prima Facie by Suzie Miller is brilliant, and the audiobook is read by Jodie Comer which makes it even better.

I'm sorely tempted to spend a credit on Strange Sally Diamond, seeing all these recommendations!

WelshMoth · 21/08/2024 21:28

Ii haven't read the thread so I'm sorry if this one has been mentioned:

Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Love it.

Marine30 · 21/08/2024 21:31

I second I Am Pilgrim (which several have suggested) totally gripping.
Why not go back to the Queen of the murder mystery - Agatha Christie. They are all good but ABC murders probably the best.
Patricia Highsmith (any) all are eerie and chilling
Sherlock Holmes, Hounds of the Baskerville (save for winter to add atmosphere)
Jamaica Inn, Daphne du Maurier - just a cracking read
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde - everyone knows the saying, not many people read the book but it is so good!
Jo Nesbo, The Snowman - very scary, very good
Hundreds Hall, Sarah Waters - eerie and unnerving and very readable
Prophet Song - blew me away best book this year (in fact maybe last 2 or 3 years)

LeopardPrint12 · 21/08/2024 21:34

Clare Douglas
