I've started getting into reading again and now looking for book recommendations. I don't know if it's just me not enjoying reading as much as I used to, but some of the titles I've read/attempted to recently just don't seem to grab my attention and I struggle to get through them.

I'm currently reading People Like Her by Ellery Lloyd. It's ok, but a bit slow.

I prefer mysteries and thrillers.

Please give me some ideas!

Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell.

I absolutely LOVED it

This. And her other book The Marriage Portrait.

botleybump · 21/08/2024 18:46

Anything by Steve Cavanagh! Twist thriller galore.

GingerPirate · 21/08/2024 18:49

All the stuff from Hans Fallada, really.
Requires strong mind not inclined to depression,
as I found.

A prayer for Owen Meany, had to read it again immediately.

The Hearts Invisible Furies, in fact anything by John Boyne! Beautiful writer

Mb57 · 21/08/2024 18:57

The cracked mirror by Chris Brookmyre it’s a brilliant surprising book . It was so good I read it again immediately. I got it from the library but I’m going to buy it so I can read it anytime

Lifelover16 · 21/08/2024 18:59

Kate Atkinson - the Jackson Brodie series. First one is “Started Early, Took my Dog”

alloutofcareunits · 21/08/2024 19:01

The Roy Grace books by Peter James are great quick reads. Kristin Hannah writes great epic novels that have me addicted to see what happens next. John Marrs also covers some interesting themes, and if you want an easy enjoyable story then Lisa Jewel is good

A few unputdownable books:

The Shardlake series by the late CJ Sansom

Piranesi by Susannah Clarke

The Strike series by Robert Galbraith

Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K Jerome (so funny!)

JennaRink · 21/08/2024 19:03

The Lighthouse Witches by CJ Cooke

floridaidea · 21/08/2024 19:06

11.22.63 by Stephen King.

I loved this!

BonaidMhoir · 21/08/2024 19:11

I can’t see past Folk by Zoe Gilbert - utterly compelling and rewards an active reader. Currently loving Julia by Sandra Newman and every couple of years I reread The House with the Green Shutters by George Douglas Brown - a brutal, brilliant book with characters that still stand up 120 years later. The Church of Marvels by Leslie Parry is a great page turner of a mystery with loads going on in it.

Lessstressedhemum · 21/08/2024 19:13

Oh, and anything by Conn Igguldon
And, rather shamefully, the ACOTAR books by Sarah J Mass

forgotmypassagain · 21/08/2024 19:14

Following with interest!

brieandbacon · 21/08/2024 19:17

Anything by Jo Nesbo

Pottedpalm · 21/08/2024 19:18

Jane Casey’s Maeve Kerrigan series
Steve Cavanagh’s Eddie Flynn books

Pottedpalm · 21/08/2024 19:20

And the Peter James Roy Grace series, though the later ones are weak.
Ditto Lee Child

Depending on your mood:

If you want something good I recently read and adored Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Something enjoyable and well written but not ‘worthy’ all the Dublin murder squad books by Tana French, especially The Likeness and Broken Harbour.

If you want fantasy trash then the Court of Thorns and Roses Series. It’s silly but fun and romantic.
