I've started getting into reading again and now looking for book recommendations. I don't know if it's just me not enjoying reading as much as I used to, but some of the titles I've read/attempted to recently just don't seem to grab my attention and I struggle to get through them.

I'm currently reading People Like Her by Ellery Lloyd. It's ok, but a bit slow.

I prefer mysteries and thrillers.

Please give me some ideas!

This. And her other book The Marriage Portrait.

The number of times I taught 'My Last Duchess'.... I used to love seeing the penny drop when the kids read it.

Random selection coming up:

We start at the end- Chris whittaker.
The dry
Yy to Taylor Reid. They're like reading glossy magazines. Perfect on a plane.

Really good actually
The bandit queens
Pat barker troy trilogy
The madeline Miller greek books
The great circle
Magpie
Weyward
Platform 7
The hunted- properly bonkers this one!

Any good non fiction reads?

A Bit of a Stretch, Chris Atkins.
About the author’s own prison experience and more generally the UK prison system and its failings. Very interesting and hard to put down.

How could I forget the brilliant
How to Kill Your Family

Watermelodious · 21/08/2024 21:41

And Demon Copperhead. I didn't want it to end.

I cannot get on with these at all!
H gave me them for Christmas. I have struggled to get halfway through Wolf Hall. Please tell me it is going to improve at some point. I don't want to give up on them, but oh god, it is tedious.

You might like them read to you, instead? Audio? I did find that the late Hilary assumed we would follow the narrative sometimes, I couldn't work out who was saying what in a few instances.

Flowers for Algernon

Dweetfidilove · 21/08/2024 22:33

A Day late and a dollar short - Terry McMillan.

LBOCS2 · 21/08/2024 22:36

Loved I Am Pilgrim, Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, the Undead series (and the Extracted series by the same author but is only three books!), the Rivers of London series, and ACOTAR.

Couldn't get on at all with Wolf Hall (yes, I know it's historically accurate but they all seem to be called Thomas and it did my head in), or Crawdads.

TheHateIsNotGood · 21/08/2024 22:41

The Thirteen Tribe by Arthur Koestler.

HRTQueen · 21/08/2024 22:49

Wuthering Heights but it took me about four attempts to pass the first 30ish pages then I was absolutely hooked

The Shinning

The Kite Runner

Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine

I really also enjoyed Big Little Lies

jaychops · 21/08/2024 22:53

I let you go by clare Mackintosh. Great twist!

Powersout · 21/08/2024 22:54

I highly recommend Penance by Eliza Clark, totally gripping.

Marcipex · 21/08/2024 23:39

A Suitable Boy.
I was gutted when I turned the last page.

OliveWah · 21/08/2024 23:40

I was going to say Strange Sally Diamond too, I enjoyed it so much I've just ordered 3 others by Liz Nugent!

Halloumiheaven · 21/08/2024 23:41

Sorry I haven't read all the replies so not sure if they've been previously mentioned but for me: -B.A Paris' earlier books (behind closed doors, the breakdown ).

  • Ashley Audrain (The Whispers and The Push)
  • Rebecca Witney (The Liars chair)
-The Housemaid (Freida McFadden)

These are all domestic noir/psychological thrillers if you like that genre. I find 'high brow' reads are quite often recommended, but they're not an easy or enjoyable read for me. Happy reading! 😀

Kate Atkinson - the Jackson Brodie series. First one is “Started Early, Took my Dog”

Er no, it really isn't. I think that's the fourth in the series.

  1. Case Histories
  2. One Good Turn
  3. When Will There Be Good News
  4. Started Early Took My Dog
  5. Big Sky
  6. Death at the Sign of the Rook (this has only just come out, bought it to read on holiday)
MissBattleaxe · 21/08/2024 23:52

Demon Copperhead was like book heroin.

SussexLass87 · 21/08/2024 23:54

SussexLass87 · 21/08/2024 23:55

Also....

Behind The Scenes at the Museum

Life after Life

A God in Ruins

...I'm having a moment for Kate Atkinson!

kirbykirby · 22/08/2024 00:02

Flowers for Algernon - Daniel Keyes. Classic.
