to think re-scanning 32 items out of a 66 item shop isn't a sensible check?

I'd used a self-scanner because it was a big shop and I'd carefully packed all my cold stuff together, heavy things at the bottom of bags, bread on top etc.

I don't mind being selected for a check, but when it's nearly half the items I just don't think it's reasonable. Apparently it's changed from ten items to a percentage of the shop (not sure whether that's value or number of items). There was nothing wrong with my scanning, so it wasn't as if it flagged a problem and asked for more, it was 30+ from the outset.

I'd have preferred it to have just sent me to a manned checkout to unload it all onto the belt if it needed so many to be re-scanned.

It took ages, while other people were waiting for approvals and help, and although the person doing it tried to be careful there really isn't enough space to unpack and re-pack carefully when you're scanning so much. And obviously they have to take from all levels of the bags, and the shopper can't touch it in case it looks like you're concealing something. I've come home and found my cheese has been ripped open and my chocolate eclairs have been squashed flat under my potatoes.

AIBU to think that 30+ items being re-scanned at the self-checkout is impractical as a check?

I'm so sick of this, I'm just totally over unmanned tills.

I've used the scanner twice in Sainsbury's and had a check the second time. Assistant said it's only for 6 items but she scanned more than that while having a really good rummage through the trolley. Around an £80 shop. Remember years ago in the late 1990's they had self scanners in our Safeway. Taking my DM with Alzheimer's as she had to sign with a card payment and virtually every time we had to go back through a normal till. Nightmare.

Our Safeway had that too. It was called Shop 'n' Go if I recall correctly

What fresh hell is this? Is it something they do with those hand held scanners?

I've never used them, but if I did they could fuck off if they think they're going to get me to do all the work then basically accuse me of stealing.

I hate self checkouts for more than about 6 items because it's so slow, you have to wait for each item to be accepted by weight before you can scan the next. Much slower than staff who can whizz items through.

When mine happened at Tesco it didn't seen to bad they scanned Bout 10 things. But when it happened at waitrose she rescanned over 30 items and it seemed to take ages. I had only probably bought 45 items.

I remember going to Sainsbury’s with my mum and queuing up separately for cheese, for meat

I wish you still could for some things. I miss our butcher and delicatessen counters, I used to use them a lot. Clearly not everybody did though!

Yes the deli counter a sad loss, haven't tried a new cheese since they disappeared.

On a different note, I don't get time to RTFT but I'm assuming the rescan is for the 'scan and go' type of shop?
Why don't they just weigh the whole shop as I'm.lead to believe the self scan tills (rather than the gadget you carry round) weigh items to ensure the weight matches what you scanned?
If not a whole rescan would be quicker and you could have it done bag by bag.
I would hate someone going through my shop pulling out stuff. And yes I'd be asking for refunds for the damaged item.

Why would you opt to self-scan a full shop like that? You must be bonkers!

At our sainsburys there are usually only three or four manned tills with huge queues, the self checkout area (wouldn't use that for a trolley shop) or the hand held scanners. So I'd use the hand helds for a big shop ordinarily no problem - scan and pack and then hopefully just pay and go... but adding in full trolley checks at that point makes the scan and go option stupid too.
Maybe they really are trying to get us all online!!

Sainsburys does this because it’s scanners don’t work reliably at the back of the shop furthest from the chargers. Also it’s mobile app is only as useful as the mobile coverage in the shop which is always useless.

Mummamap · 23/08/2024 12:07

I refuse to use self scan check outs now because of this reason. Just easier to queue and get the check out assistant to do it.
please email or call them about your eclairs and cheese. You don’t pay good money for damaged goods!

I tend to use the scanners in Sainsburys because their app kicks me out regularly and I can never remember my password!
It never occurred to me that the scanner range was limited. The only time I've had an issue was when I thought I'd scanned something near the back of the store.
I have found that I need to log onto the store wifi to be able to check my nectar prices and save my Sainsburys offers though.
