Needing to switch from OVO energy and find the maze of energy supplier offers completely overwhelming.

Any way of filtering/recommendations are welcome.

Octopus. Great. Trying out their 'free energy hour' thing that's happening at the moment.

Seashor · 20/08/2024 13:23

Octopus who are bloody brilliant.
We swopped to them from British Gas who took £554 from our account instead of £54. Then gave us a hard time over it denying that they had over charged us.
This continued for four months when we switched to Octopus. British Gas ended up having to refund us over £2000 . We had to threaten the ombudsman. We’re not the only ones that they did this to.

JoyousPinkPeer · 20/08/2024 13:26

Octopus. Very happy.

UprootedSunflower · 20/08/2024 13:27

Npower have been fine and unremarkable.
We’ve been with small companies that collapsed quite a few times. Each time they’ve picked up our power without making any errors and we’ve ridden their fixed rates which actually turned out to be a good deal.
A side note: we’ve never had a smart meter so I can’t comment on that. We submit readings

Octopus got moved from bulb to them no complaints

Same here, been very happy with Octopus. Liking the 'free' (above your normal usage) hours atm, good time to put a hot wash on!

TravelInsuranceQ · 20/08/2024 13:33

I've been with Octopus since Bulb went under and am very happy with them.
Energy saving rewards in the winter, the ability to adjust my direct debit myself if my balance gets higher than I'd like it - all good.
If anyone would like to join Octopus and get a £50 bonus each, please PM me for my referral code 😀

Elsvieta · 20/08/2024 21:01

Octopus - very easy to deal with and cheaper than most.

lifebyfaith · 20/08/2024 21:05

Octopus- they are brilliant

Senor · 20/08/2024 21:06

Another one for Octopus, Ovo are terrible

Vnector · 20/08/2024 21:11

Octopus and I used to work for an electricity company so have seen the other side of it. They reduce your payments if you are overpaying, the bill is emailed to you, no need to log into an account for it. They offer free electricity (well they did to me so use more in a particular time slot and get whatever you use over and above your normal pull for free) plus the energy saving sessions where you don't use electricity and they pay you for it too.

Honestly, just brilliant. I have been with them for years.

Bilbonne · 20/08/2024 21:13

British Gas haven't actually charged me for electricity for a year apart from standing charge and I get peak save rebates, I have told them several times, each time I'm promised a bill but no proper bill since I was moved to the new system a year ago. For this reason I cannot recommend them.

Dotto · 20/08/2024 21:14

Octopus Tracker. Has had by far the cheapest rates anywhere for yonks, so pleased we did it, e.g tomorrow's electric will be 14p per kwh, in this area.

To ask you who your energy supplier is and if you're happy with them?
SquigglePigs · 20/08/2024 21:30

We're with Octopus. We've never had any issues, and when we've had queries their customer service has been good.

Pav123 · 20/08/2024 21:34

I am with octopus as well and have been for a number of years. I am going onto their tracker at the end of this month. I thought I was being transferred for both gas and electricity but got an email stating that they only offer electricity on their tracker. So will have to contact customer service again to fix my gas.

EatCrow · 20/08/2024 21:35

Letgoofitall · 20/08/2024 13:09

Wow, thanks all. Really appreciate it. Looks like Octopus is the winner.

Thanks for helping with the mental load

Still do a few comparisons though, I found British Gas were cheaper for me and got a fixed tariff. I just look at the standing charge prices and unit prices for each gas and electric. I was particularly looking at the electricity unit prices.

OhMehGoddess · 20/08/2024 21:40

Octopus, have been with them for many years, since they were very small and not long started. Couple of hiccups over the years, but nothing that would make me change.

hopeful2025 · 20/08/2024 21:41

We have been happy for over ten years with utility warehouse

MamaBobo · 20/08/2024 21:42

I wouldn’t go anywhere near British Gas. Mind blowingly awful customer service, terrible estimated bills. We moved to EDF as we are with them in France and they are fantastic. Brilliant service, great app, super helpful, reasonable bills. If you have a working smart meter and no problems then price might be the only deciding factor, with a non working smart meter service was more important for us than just price. EDF offer decent prices and great service.

bebanjo · 20/08/2024 21:45

Left EDF as they wanted me to pay £650 a month, rang and took 3 hours to speak to someone who would not reduce payment's.
went to octopus have had my payments reduced twice by them and now pay £109 a month.

random123456 · 20/08/2024 21:45

Been with octopus about 6 months after having to take British Gas to Ofcom to get the to respond to a request for overpayment to be refunded 🙄

Octopus are amazing, excellent app and great customer service.

Avoid British Gas like the plague!!

Is this better than a fixed tariff?

Octopus, I came on here to recommend but see lots of pp have too!

The last few days they’ve had a free energy hour between 1pm and 2pm which has been great, and there’s another one tomorrow.

Their app is easy to use, the customer service responds quickly and is easy to understand, changing tariffs has been simple and the bills are uncomplicated.

Floralnomad · 20/08/2024 21:49

British Gas , never had an issue with them . The only issue is that the app is next to useless - it used to be good before they updated it and they are always trying to give me my credit back which I’d rather they kept .

Borninabarn32 · 20/08/2024 21:50

Octopus are the absolute bomb. My partner works for them, honestly the most morally upstanding company I've ever known. So family orientated, treat their staff amazingly, super high standards for customer service.

Dotto · 20/08/2024 21:51

Letgoofitall · 20/08/2024 21:45

Is this better than a fixed tariff?

For the last couple of years I think it has been better than any fixed tariff, yes. It tracks the real time wholesale rate which is below the current SVR.

I just checked the rates being offered by providers for fixes, and they seem outrageous compared to how the tracker performs.

I think people are put off incase prices rise, but it hasn't been a concern, and you are not tied in for long periods anyway, should that change.
