To not actually believe this story? Nursery incident

West102 · 20/08/2024 04:05

My cousins 3 year old DD has suffered a broken leg a few days ago. Apparently this happened whilst at nursery. Nursery report that she ran really fast into a table. Aibu to not believe this at all? I can’t imagine running and banging her leg into a table would result in a fracture? They have chosen to the believe the nursery’s version of events but to me it doesn’t seem likely

Something similar happened to a child I know. Not at nursery though, and the parents witnessed it. But sure enough, the leg was fractured

Chucklit · 20/08/2024 04:13

Do they have cameras? Doesn't sound right.

Aussieland · 20/08/2024 04:13

It depends what kind of fracture- some kinds could be caused by that

ImustLearn2Cook · 20/08/2024 04:51

I think the doctor who viewed the X-ray and treated her would be able to determine whether that version of events is consistent with the injury.

And yes it is possible to fracture a bone from something like that.

I knew a kid who rolled off the couch (which was quite low) onto the floor and fractured his arm because of the way he landed on it.

Trumpetoftheswan2 · 20/08/2024 05:31

My two year old fractured his leg turning round in the garden. I was standing next to him.

Edingril · 20/08/2024 05:34

I know someone who fractured their arm tripping over their own feet on a flat surface

HelenWheels · 20/08/2024 05:34

it would be a greenstick fracture, or may be not but their bones are not as hard as adults.

Jaffaisitacakeorbiscuit · 20/08/2024 05:37

Do they have a "Toddler's fracture" ? It is a common stable fracture of the lower shin bone in young children caused by low impact trauma

MercurialMargot · 20/08/2024 05:38

My kid fractured his leg by jumping off a low stool. Didn't even land particularly badly.. spiral fracture of the tibia.

Gumbo · 20/08/2024 05:39

I broke a rib when I tripped and fell against the back of a couch. My brother broke his arm falling onto soft grass from a low fence. So yes, I'd say it's definitely possible,

Shushquite · 20/08/2024 05:40

Dsis as a teenager (14 years old), fell down two steps and fractured her leg, whilst at secondary school.

She had no bullies and dr said it is most likely how she fell that caused the fractured.

I know another teenager, who ran to open the door very fast as he wanted to get back to his game. He slipped and hit the door and fractured (a bone in his arm) and dislocated his shoulder.

leopardski · 20/08/2024 05:41

Definitely possible. I fractured my foot as a child by standing on a brick in a funny way, not even at force or speed.

littleoldme3 · 20/08/2024 05:45

@West102 Do they have any reason to doubt the nursery? Have there been any other concerns?

It’s amazing the things kids manage to do at that age. I know a little boy (3yo) who broke his thigh bone running and jumping in his garden on grass. I also currently have a 3yo DS who is actually just like a walking bruise at this point. He moves everywhere very quickly with absolutely no fear and bumps himself multiple times a day!

PolePrince55 · 20/08/2024 05:48

Ask for cctv, maybe she ran very fast into a table which then fell on top of her?

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 20/08/2024 05:49

I used to work in a nursery and we had 2 steps down into the garden area, not steep steps or high and each step was quite wide. One day a little boy fell off the bottom step onto the grass at the bottom and then couldn't stand up without screaming so we phoned an ambulance. Turned out he had broken his leg. There were 3 staff members including me stood by the steps making sure the children got down safely, we all saw what happened.

It was no higher than the bottom step in your house and had a soft landing, he just landed wrong.

Bones can break surprisingly easily if caught in the wrong way. My daughter broke her arm falling off of a bike that wasn't even moving at that age. Tiny balance bike, she just fell awkwardly that's it.

autumn1610 · 20/08/2024 06:22

Yep I got a broken leg as I ran to see my mum after nursery just fell over. Don’t think it was very dramatic or big just tripped

MrsToothyBitch · 20/08/2024 06:24

I fell off a sofa and fractured my wrist aged 3. Ended up with a greenstick fracture.

WickieRoy · 20/08/2024 06:33

The parents have spoken to the nursery and the doctors and are satisfied with the nursery's explanation. It's nothing to do with you.

Lovelysummerdays · 20/08/2024 06:37

Kids do get fractures the most amazing ways. Slipped off a chair, jumped funny, it’s unlikely the staff members are lying. DS fractured his arm recently. The nhs dont even plaster cast them anymore. They put on a splint, gave me a leaflet and review at virtual fracture clinic. Kids bones are softer and more bendy so are prone to buckle fractures. On the upside they heal quickly.

Motherofalittledragon · 20/08/2024 06:39

My ds when he was 5 had a similar injury and ended up with a spiral fracture to his tibia

Boopbeepbeepboop · 20/08/2024 06:42

I fractured my arm as a child. Jumping onto the sofa!

NewGreenDuck · 20/08/2024 06:44

My oldest fell out of bed and broke his leg. He was an adult so you wouldn't think it was possible, would you, but no, he broke his tibia. My youngest broke his arm falling over. He was 6.
So,yes, I do find it believable.

PolePrince55 · 20/08/2024 05:48

Not sure the nursery is going to give cctv to the cousin of the parent when the parent believes the story.

What do you think happened OP? Do you have a reason to think the nursery are doing a cover up?

Oopstoo · 20/08/2024 06:55

Children at that age have flexible bones - whilst they are referred to as a fracture - they actually experience what is called a green stick fracture (worth googling) and the bone shows some change in texture / shape but is not actually broken with cracks like an adults bone would be.
