To not actually believe this story? Nursery incident

My cousins 3 year old DD has suffered a broken leg a few days ago. Apparently this happened whilst at nursery. Nursery report that she ran really fast into a table. Aibu to not believe this at all? I can’t imagine running and banging her leg into a table would result in a fracture? They have chosen to the believe the nursery’s version of events but to me it doesn’t seem likely

Dsis as a teenager (14 years old), fell down two steps and fractured her leg, whilst at secondary school.

She had no bullies and dr said it is most likely how she fell that caused the fractured.

I know another teenager, who ran to open the door very fast as he wanted to get back to his game. He slipped and hit the door and fractured (a bone in his arm) and dislocated his shoulder.

Almost exactly the same thing happened to my friend at school. He just missed his step and fell down two steps and fractured his leg. Is there a particular reason why you think nursery are lying?

JennyfromtheBlok · 20/08/2024 07:03

Broken or fractured?
very big difference between the 2.

A fracture could be just a very slight crack or a green stick fracture as the bones are still fairly flexible.

My son rolled of the couch onto the floor and broke his arm, the doctor said it's quite common!

RocketPanda · 20/08/2024 07:08

Do you have children? They tend to find new and inventive ways to injure themselves on a daily basis when they're toddlers. When my dc was four he broke his arm when he fell off a toy he was sitting on. Only fell maybe 10cm from a sitting position to a carpeted floor.

Wordsmithery · 20/08/2024 07:08

If the doctor felt these injuries were inconsistent, wouldn't they call the safeguarding team?
If the medics are satisfied, that should put your mind at rest.

Ub12 · 20/08/2024 07:10

I know a kid who broke his arm in 3 places jumping on a mattress…. in a tent!!! And I broke my ankle getting off the last step of a ladder onto the grass…

Dragonsandcats · 20/08/2024 07:10

Mine ran into their cousin and broke their leg so yes I believe it.

Pistachiochiochio · 20/08/2024 07:11

As a child I broke my arm running into something wooden (by accident). I was 6.

neverbeenskiing · 20/08/2024 07:12

The medical professionals who treated her were obviously satisfied that her injury was consistent with the explanation given, otherwise they would be obliged to report to the relevant authorities.

CosmicDaisyChain · 20/08/2024 07:14

As a child I fractured my wrist. I thought I just sprained it. I didn't even know it was broken until my mum took me to hospital a week later because I couldn't hold a pencil properly.

Changingplace · 20/08/2024 07:19

I think it’s definitely possible, my sister rolled off a sofa as a child and broke her arm. Wasn’t high or even with much force, she just rolled awkwardly and it was broken.

My sister did the same when she was a child, it is indeed quite common!

Maraa · 20/08/2024 07:26

I know a four year old who broke his leg just stepping down from a kerb, sounds crazy, he just stepped off at a weird angle and broke his leg so it is plausible at that age

JLou08 · 20/08/2024 07:40

The staff at the hospital would be alert to safeguarding concerns. If they didn't think the injury was consistent with the explanation they would have raised it.
I broke my foot slipping on a toy car once, aged 23 with no medical concerns. I've had much worse accidents and not ended up with a broken bone. It doesn't always take much to break a bone, just unfortunate positioning.

SilverPuffin · 20/08/2024 07:43

Perfectly possible to have happened in that way, and in my experience the hospital staff would raise a safeguarding concern if they thought that the injury was inconsistent with the explanation.

Wish44 · 20/08/2024 07:53

My friends baby had her arm fractured by her over enthusiastic 3 year old.. seems ridiculous but she saw it happen

Infertilemyrtler · 20/08/2024 07:55

My DS broke a bone at nursery, the lady watching him at the time said X happened (no cameras, no witness) The hospital were amazing and straight away said that that couldn't possibly have happened and could tell me the angle and trajectory etc of the incident all from the position and size of the fracture. It turned out shed dropped him and lied, it was fully investigated and she was sacked.

my point is, hospitals are VERY clued up when it comes to kids and broken bones, if something was amiss they would say. Also all broken bones in nursery/school settings are referred to ofsted and county council H&S for investigating

Tumbleweed101 · 20/08/2024 07:55

Young children running about and being silly with friends could most definitely run into a table hard enough to hurt themselves.

Oakcupboard · 20/08/2024 07:56

I broke my ankle and leg in 4 places, by simply going over on my ankle 🙈

Member984815 · 20/08/2024 07:59

It's definitely possible, is there a reason you are suspicious of the nursery?

InTheRainOnATrain · 20/08/2024 07:59

The A&E doctors are the experts and would have said if the injuries were inconsistent with their version of events so if they’re not concerned I wouldn’t assume you know better.

pinkstripeycat · 20/08/2024 08:00

WickieRoy · 20/08/2024 06:33

The parents have spoken to the nursery and the doctors and are satisfied with the nursery's explanation. It's nothing to do with you.

I really don’t know why people like you have to be so rude. Always a little snipe at the end.

OP just wanted a discussion. Isn’t that allowed?

ReadWithScepticism · 20/08/2024 08:02

I love that this thread has produced an absolute avalanche of fractured toddlers. Grin You'd think they were made of glass. I'll add my own little contribution to the mass splinter. Aged nearly three, DS2 jumped unspectacularly off a low chair and managed a spiral fracture of the bone in the lower leg.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 20/08/2024 08:04

What reason do you have not to believe them?

Toddlers are clumsy and can injure themselves in the most benign and normal ways.

Flubadubba · 20/08/2024 08:04

Something similar happened to a friend, and the nursery self reported it and were investigated. These things happen, and toddler bones are still quite fragile.
