To not actually believe this story? Nursery incident

My cousins 3 year old DD has suffered a broken leg a few days ago. Apparently this happened whilst at nursery. Nursery report that she ran really fast into a table. Aibu to not believe this at all? I can’t imagine running and banging her leg into a table would result in a fracture? They have chosen to the believe the nursery’s version of events but to me it doesn’t seem likely

It’s weird to disbelieve it.

I remember being called as first aider at school to a child who apparently was stood fairly still and dropped to sitting on the floor. He said his foot hurt. I'd been told on the quiet beforehand they thought he may be playing on it as there was no obvious reason it should.

I went over and checked him over. I said I wanted an ambulance as concerned he'd broken his leg. Also to call parents.

Everyone thought I'd drunk the kool aid.

His leg was broken in 2 places!

There was the tiniest dip in the grass and just his foot twisting into it whilst stood fairly motionless was enough.

It does happen.

My cousin broke her arm doing a backwards walkover.

She didn't even fall. Just literally did it and then was screaming in pain.

Some of us stayed with her (in the middle of a random field 😂) while other went to get adults. They were telling her not to be so dramatic she hadn't even fallen over.

But it's was a complete break.

And yet I was thrown from a horse and lands on one arm. Suspected broken collarbone and elbow. Nope - just (a lot!) of swelling and bruising. I was actually quite disappointed after such a dramatic event 😂😂😂 (I was peak teen drama stage)

Seashor · 20/08/2024 13:31

My son stepped off a log and broke his leg so I believe it.

West102 · 20/08/2024 16:41

Thanks everyone. Just never knew something like that can cause broken leg but good to be proven wrong. There's been some other general concerns about the nursery so I was worried this was a cover up. Found out that it is her tibia and fibula broken. The nursery did not ring an ambulance though. They rang my cousin to come and get her to take her

I didn’t call an ambulance for my daughter when she broke her leg either, I took her to A&E. In fact I only took her about 4 hours after she did it, because I thought she’d walk it off and be fine. It’s so hard to tell with children. Also I’m sure at 3 she’d prefer to be with her mum than in the back of an ambulance.

WickieRoy · 20/08/2024 16:54

I know a GP who didn't realise for at least 24 hours that his toddler had broken his leg. But again OP, nothing to do with you.

West102 · 20/08/2024 16:56

I know it's not but I'm glad I posted so I am now aware it's something that can happen. as even her mum and dad were in shock that it's happened like this.

One of mine (many, many years ago) stepped awkwardly off a sofa and gave himself an extremely unusual spiral fracture to the arm - the sort associated with abuse. Strange things do happen. 🤷🏼‍♀️

alrightluv · 20/08/2024 17:08

Ds1 broke his arm at soft play.

thejadefish · 20/08/2024 18:24

DN aged about 1, maybe 18 months was sat on the bottom step of the stairs, somehow fell off & fractured her arm. A woman I used to work with managed to sustain a spiral fracture of her leg just by getting out of the car (the very high heels she was wearing may have contributed to it I don't know, she was a passenger btw not the driver). It's surprisingly easy to do. I admit if hadn't known people who had suffered fractures in such unexpected ways I'd question it too but as it is, yes I can believe it!

itsgettingweird · 20/08/2024 19:01

That reminds me of another story.

Me and my friend had been out for a few beers in a beer garden. Walking home with her dog and she went over in her ankle and was wearing boots.

We walked the rest of the way home chatting and arranged to meet for dog walk in the morning and stop for breakfast and coffee.

Went to hers the next day and she didn't answer door. Her dog was barking. I called her phone. She couldn't walk and her ankle was really swollen.
I managed to get in through her open back window. Got her some ice and walked her dog.

When I got back she was an awful colour and her leg felt no better so got another friend and we practically carried her to the car.

She had fractured her ankle.

I still wind her up 15 years later that beer is clearly the best painkiller around!

It isn't an emergency though unless the bone was sticking out. Correct protocol to call the parents first - who could've insisted on an ambulance.

Tiswa · 21/08/2024 10:48

I didn’t call an ambulance when DS broke his leg (sounds a very similar fracture actually - someone landed on him on a trampoline) took him in the car

he didn’t need any attention prior to getting to hospital at all

It concerns me that almost every accident at a nursery, school, or childminder is automatically the fault of the establishment and staff, and NEVER, EVER the child concerned. I had a work colleague who worked as a nursery nurse and gave up when every bruise and cut was subject to the Spanish Inquisition, and when they introduced webcams, Mums would be calling when their child fell asking why the staff didn’t prevent it?

Mumoftwochildrenand6furkids · 21/08/2024 18:27

Not sure as an few years back my mums Labrador puppy jumped up me, I fell only onto grass and ended up with an broken knee cap so breaks and fractures can happen quite easy.

FluffyBenji23 · 21/08/2024 18:54

My sister in law broke her leg really badly climbing out of skinny jeans! The smallest incident can cause a fracture.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 21/08/2024 19:09

To the person who said there is a difference between broken and fractured - this is a very common misconception but it is wrong. Fractured means broken to any degree, from cracked to broken right through to shattered. They are all fractures. The technical name for a hairline crack is a hairline fracture but that doesn't mean fracture = crack.

Look at the definition on this site and especially the diagram of "types of bone fractures" further down the page.

For what it's worth, I have heard of people breaking or cracking bones in circumstances even less dramatic than what happened to the OP's relative, so I believe it.

laraitopbanana · 21/08/2024 19:12

Hi op,

it is very plausible actually but I think it is great that you feel like doublechecking :) lucky cousins.

@riceuten they had webcams in the nursery?!?! Is this normal?! 😳

AgathaSultana · 21/08/2024 19:14

My brother broke both arms falling off a swing so I think it's actually quite easy to break a bone when young

You haven't been proven wrong OP. You've just heard alot of anecdotal evidence about how sometimes fractures in children can occur easily.

For all the stories you read here there are millions more of children who have had - on the face of it - horrific accidents and walked away completely unscathed.

The injury is 100% worthy of follow up and checking of CCTV. A good nursery would be allowing you in to watch the footage, given that the injury resulted in a fracture. In fact a good nursery with nothing to hide would be begging you to come in and see.

Yes, for these particular nurseries. Not unusual in this part of London.

Lessstressedhemum · 21/08/2024 19:16

When my ds2 was 3, he broke his ankle getting out of bed. Didn't jump, fall out, just stood on it in a funny way and broke it.
