Really weird stuff people do that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Someone I know puts hotel TV remotes in plastic bags before using them, because she once heard a standup comedian talking about men wanking on them while watching porn.

WTAF?

What weird things do people you know do that make absolutely no sense at all? Anything as odd as that?

Did they live in Royston Vasey, and have twin daughters called Chloe and Radclyffe?

So glad you said this!

"White for hands, brown for feet
Green for torso, thighs and seat.
And in the cupboard beneath the stair
You'll find the red for pubic hair. "

Biffbaff · 18/08/2024 21:44

Ripping up actual grass and replacing it with plastic grass.
Same goes for plastic outdoor shrubbery.
It's all that's wrong with the world!

Areolaborealis · 18/08/2024 21:45

I know someone who bought a newbuild house only to take it back to the brick for and extreme level of renovation that seemed unnecessary for a brand new house with nothing structurally wrong with it. Surely a lick of paint and new fixtures and fittings would suffice?

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 18/08/2024 21:45

God its not the remote or other hard surfaces. A quick wipe and they are clean. Its those extra bed cushions and covers you know haven't been washed in months, people have done all sorts on those even if its just throwing them on the floor where their outside shoes have tramped over.

My fave was my lovely aunt who covered all her saucers in cling film. God knows why. She had a right and wrong way of doing everything. I like the quirks. It makes us human.

my ex's Nan would turn EVERYTHING off at the plug before she left the house or went to bed, everything except the fridge and freezer (because we trust them).
He lived with her for a while so he did it to, so when we house sat for my parents while they were away he unplugged the sky box so nothing recorded. They weren't best pleased!

My bf has switched off some of my extension leads without telling me, meaning my phone didn't charge. I was really not happy.

@PerkyMintDeer I don’t know why but red for privates is really making me laugh😂 . I like my own towel and DH has his own but I do use my own towel indiscriminately all over my body. I am now thinking of the towel in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

It's always been said with a slight panic as well...

"Now remember Little Perky, it's RED for your PRIVATES!!! Use the middle for your front, rinse it, flip it over and use the CORNERS for your BOTTY. Be VERY CAREFUL, you don't want to get an INFECTION."

No wonder I grew up with anxiety and sexual shame.

Red = Danger

PRIVATES = RED = DANGER = BOTTY = INFECTION - arrrrrrrrrggggghhhhhh

HotPotato123 · 18/08/2024 21:49

Just wanted to add that I own a self catering apartment/air b&b and I ALWAYS clean the remote thoroughly 🙂

I've stayed in loads of hotels, never felt a need to clean them, used the kettles, remotes, towels and bed linen, and have never suffered any ill effects.

I'm not going to be lectured or shamed for that, thank you.

I did that exactly how? I merely responded to your question about a source.
You don't want people to answer your questions? Maybe you should consider not asking questions. I don't get what your problem is, but whatever. Carry on.

PrimitivePerson · 18/08/2024 21:50

I think older people are more paranoid about switching off electricals at night, because in the past a lot of them were genuinely more dangerous than they are now. A lot of things used a lot more power than modern devices do, and had far less fail safe mechanisms in them. Modern circuit breakers are really quick to operate as well.

Some people won’t use hotel kettles as apparently people piss in them or worse. Don’t know how true but it wouldn’t surprise me 😂

Google 'cabin crew' and 'hotel kettles'

Ah@PerkyMintDeer I am sorry for laughing having seen your update. That’s a really horrible thing to do to a child. It’s totally understandable that it caused issues for you. I hope you are OK now.

I wasn't asking about it, but never mind. I just think it's excessively paranoid to worry about hotel room cleanliness to the point of desperately trying to convince other people that they're health hazards.

I've never suffered any ill effects from staying in hotel rooms.

I pass scrambled egg mix through a sieve before cooking it so there’s no white flecky bits in the finished product. (bleurgh!) Been told by everyone this is very weird.

Nigella does this for some recipes. I don't think it was scrambled egg though. Possibly some sort of custard

XChrome · 18/08/2024 21:54

PrimitivePerson · 18/08/2024 21:31

I never, ever worry about this or do this stuff. I'm perfectly healthy and extremely rarely ill.

I'd say your hygiene routines are excessively paranoid.

I'm immunocompromised, so no, not at all.
As I said, not everyone has your good fortune.

No, PLEASE, laugh! I do! The batshittery can be weird/inappropriate and really fucking funny too! It helps me to laugh - it IS funny! Please don't feel bad or apologise.

Don't most people have two tea towels on the go in the kitchen - one for hands and one for dishes?

I do

That's quite a weird take. I merely posted facts, of which many people are not aware. If you are allergic to facts, that's not my fault.
Enough already. You got offended when nothing personal was said about you, even though you got personal and called me "paranoid." Grow a thicker skin.

Turning electrical gadgets off rather than leave on standby- advised by brother, fire-fighter. He said he’s been called out to fires started by items left on standby.

I argued with a firefighter. They had come to do safety visits to mum's sheltered housing. They were trying to tell her she had to switch the tv off at the mains plud every night. Mum was 90 and not very steady on her feet. The socket was skirting board level.
I argued that a frail old lady was more likely to have an accident and fall than a modern tv left on standby was to catch fire, as they are designed to be. He did concede, reluctantly, that I might have a point.

I don't get why you have so much energy invested in trying to make me scared of hotel hygiene. It's not like I go around licking the walls.

I'm sorry you're immunocompromised, but I'm not, and I consider life to be too short to worry about this stuff. I'm not going to read those articles, because I don't think I'll gain anything from doing so.

Of course, but it's irrelevant to the wider issue. These germs can infect anyone. There is no way of predicting who it will be. You've been lucky, as have lots of people. Others haven't. Isn't it always a good thing to be informed?

I guarantee all these firefighters giving them advice don’t do it at home either.

Trust me, my dad does. He even put a smoke alarm above my bed as I once fell asleep with the tv on. 😆

@PerkyMintDeer have you ever read the thread in Classics about weird parental behaviour https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/mumsnet_classics/1651633-Omg-such-anality-from-pil-Come-and-share-your-anal-behaviour-stories-lighthearted?page=1
there is some good stuff about towels and flannels in it!

No, I strongly suspect my brothers and sisters will have posted on there!
