P*rn blackmail email

NCd for this as I am both ashamed and scared.

Last night I used porn (I didn’t come here to be judged. I hate myself for it, so go easy). This morning I have had an email from a stranger saying that they hacked my webcam and will reveal the footage unless I pay them. Now I know that these are fakes (there has been a thread about them on here I think) but this one has worried me because it’s come so soon afterwards. It also named the site I used, which although a common one is still a red flag for me. Those coincidences make me worried. Please reassure me because I am feeling very useasy.

The last one I had was entitled "Hello Pervert". I did laugh at that. It's a scam, ignore it.

I had that one recently.

Couldn't seem to be able report it though.

Ha I got that too - made me laugh

YesSirMam · 18/08/2024 16:05

Don’t worry. It’s a scam. Next time just use something to cover camera for your piece of mind

ColinMyWifeBridgerton · 18/08/2024 16:05

Cover the camera. But either way, it's a fake. It might not be a coincidence, though, in the sense that there might be some way of the scammer knowing you've visited that website.

oakleaffy · 18/08/2024 16:06

@Germainefear I never look at porn, and had an email that actually used part of my name, and an old password.

It said it had accessed a webcam and had allegedly video'd me while I was 'pleasuring myself and to say I had good taste in porn, but to keep the dirty little secret between me and the hacker.

It wanted money, or it would forward the video of what I was watching and me wanking to everyone on my email contacts list.

I knew it was nonsense, as I don't look at porn.

I googled, and it said it was a scam, a well known extortion scam.

However , many men do fall for it according to a report I'd read, and a couple of men had even killed themselves over it. {Imagine a teenage boy receiving it}

It was a nasty email to have received, linked to a data breach where old passwords were stolen.

It's spam. I would reply back with 'if you are watching me then you actually need to pay me for your pleasure'.

oakleaffy · 18/08/2024 16:10

Germainefear · 18/08/2024 15:22

I think from reading everyone’s replies that this is a fake, although the coincidence of the timing and the mention of the website worries me still.

But the issue isn’t really people finding out that I watched porn. As you say, a lot of people do. It’s that I don’t want them seeing me watch it!

Everyone showers, but I wouldn’t want someone watching a video of me showering.

This : It's a scam.

Has A ‘Hacker’ With Your Password Really Recorded You Watching Porn?

Got a worrying email from a 'hacker' who claims to have recorded you watching porn? Here's what to do.

OnceUponATimeInTheWest · 18/08/2024 16:11

In the extremely unlikely event that they have hacked your webcam, they would definitely send you a still from the video to prove they were genuine - why would they not? If nothing else arrives then you can happily ignore it.

InSpainTheRain · 18/08/2024 16:15

Don't worry about it - it's a well known scam tactic. In future I suggest you put a post-it note (or similar) over the camera if you are worried.

Apollo365 · 18/08/2024 16:23

Good god don’t hate yourself for looking at porn.

DO NOT REPLY. That confirms the email they have for you is live and they will sell it on

Branconche · 18/08/2024 18:13

Clearly @shuggles has yet to discover that it's not just men who can orgasm...?

shuggles · 18/08/2024 18:14

@Branconche Well clearly it's unusual for women to watch porn. Otherwise there wouldn't be so much opposition to it from women on mumsnet, for example.

There was a study done. Apparently over 90% of men do. Around 60% of women do. So it’s more common than you’d think

GreenJeans6 · 18/08/2024 18:20

There is also something called ethical porn

Sorry, 60%? Just how reliable is that study?

That would suggest there is a rather large % of women who have ethical issues with pornography but watch it anyway, and have been completely unable to resolve this moral dilemma in their minds. Just like the Christian man who feels guilty every time he uses porn.

Apparently one of the main porn sites does a ‘year in review’ each year with statistics. It actually found that the amount of females watching porn has increased. Apparently main searches made by women were for ‘lesbian’ or ‘female friendly’ porn.

Well yes, people are hypocritical and often don’t have very strong opinions on all topics. (Are you new to the world?!)

bungaloid · 18/08/2024 13:51

I feel sad I never get these emails. I get ones with fake Screwfix headers or some random home appliances / competitions. I did get one about Ukrainian brides once.

Argh I get these all the time! Always from some random Gmail account 🤣

shuggles · 18/08/2024 18:42

@TheMarzipanDildo I would say the opinions on pornography on mumsnet are pretty strong.

All of my opinions are fairly self-consistent. I would have thought that anyone over the age 18 or 20 would have identified any inconsistencies in their opinions, sat down, thought "what do I actually believe," and then worked through their opinions to achieve something self-consistent.

GingersOwner26 · 18/08/2024 18:44

Delete and block the fool.

Honestly, if anyone got sent a random video from someone they never heard of, that they weren’t expecting, how many of you would even click on it? I know mine would be straight in spam without clicking the link. So even if someone did send anything out, I doubt people would even look at it. But it’s a very common scam, they send out loads of these, they’re always bound to get someone eventually who has watched porn by coincidence.

Yes but MN is not representative of the whole female population. It’s mostly women in their 30s/40s/50s with partners and children. I suspect a lot of the women who watch porn on the regular are in their teens or twenties. MN is also a pretty consciously feminist part of the internet.

Also, people who only very rarely watch porn may not see themselves as part of the problem.

shuggles · 18/08/2024 18:50

What difference does that make?

TheMarzipanDildo · 18/08/2024 18:51

Basically, most people aren’t particularly consistent, and have all sorts of wavering and conflicting views.
