P*rn blackmail email

NCd for this as I am both ashamed and scared.

Last night I used porn (I didn’t come here to be judged. I hate myself for it, so go easy). This morning I have had an email from a stranger saying that they hacked my webcam and will reveal the footage unless I pay them. Now I know that these are fakes (there has been a thread about them on here I think) but this one has worried me because it’s come so soon afterwards. It also named the site I used, which although a common one is still a red flag for me. Those coincidences make me worried. Please reassure me because I am feeling very useasy.

Made me laugh as I wouldn’t know how to even find a porn site if I wanted to.

You'd type 'porn' into Google, just like anything else you wanted to find?

Dilemmaleeds20 · 18/08/2024 13:49

100% scam. Ive had that email too.
And if it has freaked u out, next time you watch, you could always put black tape over ur webcam to be safe. But yep 100% scam, nothing to worry about promise.

StickItInTheFamilyAlbum · 18/08/2024 13:49

Well-know scam and spam.

JabbaTheBeachHut · 18/08/2024 13:49

It's not a coincidental scam, it's a virus.

Free porn sites are often riddled with them.

Oceangreyscale · 18/08/2024 13:49

Next time close the camera shutter or put tape over it or whatever so you don't have to worry!

Well there you go! I've learned something new today.

bungaloid · 18/08/2024 13:51

I feel sad I never get these emails. I get ones with fake Screwfix headers or some random home appliances / competitions. I did get one about Ukrainian brides once.

rkahic · 18/08/2024 13:53

Definitely a scam, ignore, nothing illegal about watching the type of porn the majority of people watch and if it’s not that type( which it 100%will have been) then a scam email would be the least of anyone’s worries

Addalittlespice · 18/08/2024 13:53

Delete block and cover your webcam!!

Bobbotgegrinch · 18/08/2024 13:54

As everyone else has said, it's a scam.

There's no incentive for them to hack your webcam. It's far less effort for them to send out thousands upon thousands of these emails and get one person who's gullible enough to believe it, than it is to actually try to hack someone's camera.

To put your mind at ease in future though, get some little round stickers, and stick them over your webcam. Can't hack a sticker!

C1N1C · 18/08/2024 13:56

They're not going to get any money from me to stop them...

...they'd probably get more money from friends and family to not send them my wrinkly, naked bits!

rocky5001 · 18/08/2024 13:57

Surely if they had footage from your webcam, the obvious thing for them to do would be to include a snippet of it with the email they send you. Anyone receiving that would be REALLY scared.

So assuming they haven't done that, I wouldn't worry. But yeah, in future just cover the webcam.

thursdaymurderclub · 18/08/2024 13:58

its a scam... just ignore it!

ShuvieTupya · 18/08/2024 14:04

Have a close look at the email, you can tell fake stuff a mile off. And what p*rn asks for your email.

NewGreenDuck · 18/08/2024 14:04

I've had several of these recently. The odd thing is, for info, I have a couple of days prior to this received an email that I thought was from a friend. It was actually an invitation to watch porn. And not from the friend. I deleted the 1st email and then got the ' hello pervert' one. I think that might be a new way to try to blackmail us.
Just delete, don't be upset and get on with your life.

I don't think there's anything wrong with looking at porn. I'm a regular user. Do I think most of it is for men? Yes. Do I think a lot of it is sexist? Yes. Do I enjoy some porn as a woman? Yes. I've also had the same email as you OP. It really freaked me out but my hubby said as others above have said it was just spam. I changed all my passwords just in case which made me feel better and I bought a webcam slide blocker but now I never use it as I always watch porn on my phone. Smart phones more secure. Try not to worry and definitely don't beat yourself up about watching porn!!!! I love a good sesh with my bullet and lesbian porn and my hubby totally supports it!

No I wasn’t. But my computer has a camera. I’m no IT specialist but I worry it could be hacked in some way and I could be recorded.

I wasn’t doing anything illegal or unusual. Just what people do when visiting that website. But obviously it’s the most private thing in the world so the thought of it being shared is awful.

They can be hacked. Just put black tape over it next time.

but yeah. It’s highly unlikely they did it at the exact time you were online. Ignore it

gardenmusic · 18/08/2024 14:05

I had one of these.
Apparently they had seen me 'pleasuring' my self, and if I coughed up some bitcoin, all the 'nastiness would go away', or else they would share the video with my contacts list. Oh, and I was not to worry, as they were honourable people who would stick to their word.
How on earth did they see me with my Lindor and wine??? (and OK, a bit of Gorgonzola and crackers, and some grapes)
I think I can get away with pleasuring myself at weekends. If it were a Monday, I'd be asking where to get the Bitcoin.

Sallyh87 · 18/08/2024 14:07

I got one of these emails before, I’ve never watched porn in my life. So if they hacked my webcam they are likely to see me doing my eye brows or answering emails while eating crisps. Not very salacious!

katseyes7 · 18/08/2024 14:09

I get these every so often. I don't watch porn and my ancient laptop doesn't even have a webcam.
I just report it as spam and then forget about it. They're working on the law of averages that so many out of the recipients of the many emails they send out will panic and bite.

Greytulips · 18/08/2024 14:11

My laptop have a camera covering - it’s small and slides over the lens.

Check if you have one.

Demonhunter · 18/08/2024 14:13

Funniest one I got started with "Hi big boy..." 🤣 my DP found it particularly hilarious because I'd been DIYing and heavy gardening while he deep cleaned the house, the day before and I joked I was turning into the man of the house 🤣🤣

Those little round plasters work as a cam covering too!
