Bar soap is superior to liquid soap

  • feel you have it in your for hands longer and have to scrub longer to get the squeaky feeling off the skin- thus feels cleaner
  • less waste of packaging
  • less waste of product. I feel you use so much more than needed with liquid soaps and bar soap lasts an age
  • much much cheaper than liquid soap (standard bar soap vs standard liquid soap, not the fancy stuff)
  • looks pretty in a soap dish
  • can get really beautiful smelling and looking handmade bars
  • hands feel softer

I do keep liquid soap in the bathroom too (for guests to use) but I never see bars in peoples bathrooms anymore.

Morrisons have them and cheap too. Think they were £1.

Yeah but they are not big enough. I'm talking about big 240g bars. I've tried cutting them in half but they crumble!

That's like washing yourself with a plank.

Edit: I suppose you're going to have to just save half-used bars of the giant soap you like, ones that have been worn down just far enough to fit into a normal box, and put them to one side for when you're travelling.

pambeesleyhalpert · 16/08/2024 19:22

I hate a bar it makes my skin so dry

Londonrach1 · 16/08/2024 19:25

Yes and I love my bar soap. However I have liquid soap in the kitchen due to the ease of washing your hands when you doing food prep

I don’t dislike soap, but it seems very difficult to get hold of soap dishes/holders/boxes for travel that are big enough for bath sized bars.

I don't bother with a soap box/holder - I wrap the soap up in a dry facecloth and pop it in a plastic bag. The facecloth keeps the soap nice and dry.

"This genuinely never happens to ours. It stays firm and smooth and solid until it is a tiny scrap. No mush. It just sits on a ceramic soap dish. Different soap types?"

Every soap dish I've ever had (with every soap I've tried) has been like that.

So this is where your soap type will have an impact.

Some soaps (lush, various "handmade") ones use what soapmaker's call "melt and pour" soaps. They're ok, what you get in craft kits from Hobbycraft etc but often are softer. Any additional oils, perfumes etc often break down that soap into a softer bar.

Then there's "soaps" like Dove which are actually syndet bars so not actually soap at all. Again, very much softer, can be nice on the skin but go mushy fast.

Cold process soaps need to have curing time. Savon de Marseille takes months to cure as it's olive oil based, whereas a hard oil based soap with loads of coconut or palm oil will cure in a few weeks.

Hot process soap is hardest and least mushy but looks a bit funky. Great for dishes and for washing makeup brushes etc if you get a good recipe.

I make my own cold process and yes it goes softer if it doesn't drain properly but it's so much fun making and scenting your own

I would prefer guests to use liquid I don't want their germs all over my soap.

That's the advantage of liquid soap, no cross contamination. Germs lurk on bars of soap, not in liquid soap that is washed down the plughole

Irridescantshimmmer · 16/08/2024 20:25

I totally agree with you there 300%

Not sure germs do lurk on soap but happy to be corrected,I think by its very nature soap is antibacterial so might dry out and crack if not used but won't be germ ridden.

I love bar soap but my kids and husband hate it so I get liquid (begrudgingly)

MoreHairyThanScary · 17/08/2024 08:24

We were strongly advised by our Cystic Fibrosis team not to use bar soap as bugs can grow ( when it's left in all soggy ) particularly pseudomonas, so I have avoided ever since and stuck to liquid soap!

Ilovecleaning · 17/08/2024 08:34

I have been an advocate of bar soap for years.
Hand wash and shower gels are a rip off and a manufacturer’s way of selling water instead of soap.
Liquids are gone in a trice whereas soap bars last weeks. Even luxury soaps costing £5-10 are not expensive in the long run as they last a long time and are creamy with lovely smells.
However, I keep both in my bathroom, hand wash in one side of the taps, a bar of soap on the other.

I’m a big fan of bar soap ( as I said in another post) and I’m also a bit fussy about my bathroom. I wash and dry the soap dish regularly and I wipe the soap bar dry with a towel regularly. Sounds fussy, I know, but it takes about one minute.

Me too, I have good soap dishes which drain well and good soap which doesn't mush, I also use a net bag in the shower so it hangs and dries. LOVE bar soap 😻

YANBU, I do have liquid soap for hand washing as it’s more convenient and keeps the sink cleaner, but you cannot beat bar soap for washing. DH and I are massive fans, and it is better for cleaning your body than shower gel.

my biggest disappointment is that the supermarkets stock so few types these days that I tend to buy just Imperial Leather (DH’s favourite) or Wrights Coal Tar (mine).

Loads of fabulous bar soaps online. Try Bronnleys 😊

Water is NOT enough to clean you!

Correct. I can’t remember the science, but I think it’s the combination of ions in the water and something in the soap which work together to get rid of dirt and germs.

CherryVanillaPie · 17/08/2024 12:01

I use soap dishes like this as they let air get to the soap all round

Bar soap is superior to liquid soap

I was curious about this, so looked it up, and the research seems to say that liquid soap is equally, if not more, likely to be contaminated.

I have a French olive oil soap in my bathroom which has been there for at least 6 weeks, it started out huge and still has at least a couple of weeks to go. It looks & feels fine, no cracking, mushiness or sloppy residue at all. It is in a granite soap dish with a perforated bottom. I use it all over apart from my face.

A good solution esp for those who are out & about a lot is soap leaves. They can just be tucked in your handbag and forgotten about until you are faced with skanky looking soap/liquid soap (or none at all) in public toilets.

Liquid soap gives me the rage. Was looking at the display innTesco yesterday and all that plastic! Why??

Does no one care about the planet?

We even switched to bar shampoo and conditioner to avoid plastic.

UnaOfStormhold · 17/08/2024 20:41

@oakleaffy judging by the amount of scale that builds up on every surface we definitely don't have soft water. Normal soap doesn't lather very well which is why I notice this one - I think it's the castor oil.

This is the recipe I use https://lovelygreens.com/honey-oats-and-beeswax-soap/ @ComeTheFckOnBridget @FlyingUnicornWings Though I don't add the oats - that does seem like asking for a clogged sink!

Bar soap all the way for hand washing in this house, preferably Pears!
