Bar soap is superior to liquid soap

  • feel you have it in your for hands longer and have to scrub longer to get the squeaky feeling off the skin- thus feels cleaner
  • less waste of packaging
  • less waste of product. I feel you use so much more than needed with liquid soaps and bar soap lasts an age
  • much much cheaper than liquid soap (standard bar soap vs standard liquid soap, not the fancy stuff)
  • looks pretty in a soap dish
  • can get really beautiful smelling and looking handmade bars
  • hands feel softer

I do keep liquid soap in the bathroom too (for guests to use) but I never see bars in peoples bathrooms anymore.

@oakleaffy judging by the amount of scale that builds up on every surface we definitely don't have soft water. Normal soap doesn't lather very well which is why I notice this one - I think it's the castor oil.

This is the recipe I use https://lovelygreens.com/honey-oats-and-beeswax-soap/ @ComeTheFckOnBridget @FlyingUnicornWings Though I don't add the oats - that does seem like asking for a clogged sink!

Thanks!
That’s very interesting that it lathers well in a hard water area.

Soft water feels so silky in comparison.

I love Dettol bar soap. It’s antibacterial. Make me feel so clean. Comes in cardboard.

Liquid soap/shower gel is just sloppy fragrances in plastic imo. Terrible for the environment.

I bet half of the stinky people on the tube on a summers day wouldn’t smell if they’d had a proper wash with a Dettol bar of soap.

Agree. Liquid hand and shower soap is just petrochemicals dressed up with laboratory made fragrances and packaged in harmful plastic.

When I see it in someone's home, my opinion of them plummets.

Antibacterial soap is no better at killing germs than normal soap is. It’s just a gimmick.

Simple bar soap in the shower/bath (I have sensitive skin and that’s the only thing that doesn’t make me break out in a rash - not on my face, though, I use a special face wash there. I’d love to be able to use fancy soap), liquid soap in bottles on the sink for handwashing in our house. We get one of those massive bottles of Cussons handwash in Costco and refill, so not too much plastic waste.

shockeditellyou · 18/08/2024 08:14

We have wickedly hard water and bar soap, whilst lovely, is a pain in the arse. We get horrific soap scum everywhere and most bars go cracked, dried and nasty very quickly, no matter what dish we use.

Normal use absolutely clogs up the drains with scum.

If you visited me, you would probably assume we just use liquid soap.
And in places where visitors might wash their hands, we have liquid soap
Enter my bathroom, and there is bar soap at the sink, and bar soap in the shower. So, soap that doesn't get shared is bar soap.
Where it's a free for all, liquid, as they feel less personal.

It's exactly the same in our house!

That's the advantage of liquid soap, no cross contamination. Germs lurk on bars of soap, not in liquid soap that is washed down the plughole

Someone said upthread that they'd done a science experiment, taking swabs from things and seeing what bacteria grew from the swabs. Absolutely no bacteria grew from the bar soap swab.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 18/08/2024 08:41

Re: the clogged pipes, it may depend on the soap. I've had problems with my shower not draining away properly, but I'm now pretty sure it's only when I use certain soaps. I used Nesti Dante for years and it was fine, and after I went back to it I had no further problems.

I wish I could use lovely handmade soaps, but they just turn to mush in my soft water. I need proper triple-milled hard bars!

greenmarsupial · 18/08/2024 08:43

I quite like bar soap but it does leave a residue. When I visit my friends who have a water softener fitted I have to take my own liquid soap as I wear contact lenses and it's almost impossible to get all of the bar soap off your fingers - ouch!

Castile soap is not petrochemicals dressed up https://realizebeauty.wordpress.com/2017/03/27/castile-soap-yes-indeedie-it-contains-chemicals/ and nor is soapnut liquid soap. There are other liquid soaps not made with petrochemicals though they might contain sodium laureth sulfate

Castile Soap – Yes indeedie, it contains chemicals.

Yes I am a chemist and yes I know that everything contains chemicals but I am in the minority here OK? So earlier this month I got involved in a conversation about Liquid Castile Soap and more spec…

I’m obviously a total lowlife, little did I know how scummy I appear from having liquid soap 😂😂

opalring · 24/08/2024 13:15

I have bathroom sinks with soap dish depressions built-in so the water drains.
