Bar soap is superior to liquid soap

  • feel you have it in your for hands longer and have to scrub longer to get the squeaky feeling off the skin- thus feels cleaner
  • less waste of packaging
  • less waste of product. I feel you use so much more than needed with liquid soaps and bar soap lasts an age
  • much much cheaper than liquid soap (standard bar soap vs standard liquid soap, not the fancy stuff)
  • looks pretty in a soap dish
  • can get really beautiful smelling and looking handmade bars
  • hands feel softer

I do keep liquid soap in the bathroom too (for guests to use) but I never see bars in peoples bathrooms anymore.

I only really like bar soap if it's the likes of Savon de Marseille etc etc. Otherwise I prefer liquid as it doesnt seem to dry my hands out as much.

My dad has wrights coal tar soap by the sink at his place and it makes my hands sting with the dryness! Had the same problem with shield that we had as a kid.

In my bathroom/shower I have liquid soap and shower gel. Just tidier and less fuss imo.

ZittiEBuoni · 16/08/2024 13:20

YANBU, I only buy bar soap now but dc and dh are liquid soap devotees and sneak it into the basket all the time.

thisiswheretheseagullfliesaway · 16/08/2024 13:38

Thank you for this thread I've just bought four bars from Kensington Soap Company 😂.

I'm on my last bar of Neste Dante and have one donkey milk soap from the French Soap Company.

We've all been on bars of soap for years now. There was a discussion on style and beauty on here about eight years ago I tried it once and was converted. We like a nice bar though TK Max often has some gorgeous ones.

I used to love the Camay ads when I was a kid. Do they still make Camay?

https://retrotvads.com/1980-camay-soap/

Also you used to be able to get magnetic soap holders to fit to your bathroom wall, happy days.

I always roll my eyes when I go into a downstairs loo and see a bottle of Aesop, so pretentious and overpriced.

Not sure about in the UK but my mom in the US still uses it. She's always worried it will cease so she buys it in bulk. She used it since I was a kid, and I can confirm it's the slipperiest bar of all the bars.

Flapjackfiasco · 16/08/2024 13:52

I switched to bar soap recently. Much better than liquid. And cheaper.
We have them in the bathroom even for guests.

user1497787065 · 16/08/2024 13:57

I use Jo Malone bar soap my DH uses Pears. These are in our bathroom. Downstairs both in the loo and kitchen I have liquid soap.

Btw, the JM soap doesn't crack and lasts ages.

Sausagenbacon · 16/08/2024 14:04

Even if bar soap was worse (which I don't find true) I'd still use it as I couldn't live with the unnecessary plastic waste of dispensers.

CherryVanillaPie · 16/08/2024 14:08

I've got a green Pears bar on the go. Its nice. Smells of lemon flower and not drying. Ive got a Nesti Dante one in the kitchen. I think it's lilac and wisteria.
I find some hand wash drying, such as the antibacterial ones. I have both out as I have friends and family that prefer hand wash.

It’s very easy to have a metal and ceramic dispenser and only buy refill pouches (recyclable) or fill up in one of those bulk places.

Bar soap allows your evil Lady’s Maid to induce a fall in the bathroom and the loss of your longed-for male heir,
reducing your daughters to penury if they can’t inveigle the next in line into marriage…

How ill informed of that plumber.
People used bar soap for literally hundreds of years. Growing up in a family of 8 that's all we used. Same with neighbours and friends. I only saw liquid soap as an adult.
Never any clogged pipes.

Well it did cause a clog in their pipes. Just because you've not experienced it doesn't make it untrue. They live in a flat. Different pipes, different plumbing, different soaps...who knows? But they must only use liquid now.

OneBadKitty · 16/08/2024 15:06

YABU! Bar soap is disgusting- it looks nice displayed in a glass jar and unused but in reality it's impractical.

It's always got a soggy wet bit underneath it, it's not as good once it starts to get small, it gets pubes stuck in it, it makes skin feel dry, it leaves a line of scum around the sink, it's been touched by everyone who visits the bathroom and probably has bits of skin, poo, etc. stuck in it...yuck!

Give me a nice glass bottle filled with some L'occitane or Neils Yard hand wash any day!

Which bar conditioner do you use please? I use soap and shampoo bars but haven't found a conditioner I get on with yet

I use kinkind, the one that is made with cinnamon. I like it as it’s less heavy than liquid conditioners I’ve tried, and it has a nice but not overpowering scent.

It was these people who popularised the famous Salem painting most older Welsh people have on their wall.
Salem (painting) - Wikipedia

I was thinking of the wedding morning. He was astute in the power of advertising and product placement, coupons etc.

It's not about my experience. I never said that. I said people used bar soaps for 100+ and pipes were not routinely clogged. So. Something of perhaps an exaggeration by the plumber?

You're right about the waste. It really is shocking, all that unnecessary plastic.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 16/08/2024 16:46

MagneticSquirrel · 16/08/2024 06:18

Bar soap is horrible, looks ok to begin with but leaves a slimy mess in the soap dish and looks messy and loses shape as you use it up. You constantly have to rinse the soap dish and soap after use. No way would I go back to it. Just extra cleaning effort compared to liquids.

This genuinely never happens to ours. It stays firm and smooth and solid until it is a tiny scrap. No mush. It just sits on a ceramic soap dish. Different soap types?

Nor do we get cracks and seams, but I’ve seen soap like that, I know what people mean. I think if it’s left for ages between uses it might dry out in that way?

Genuinely, sharing a bar of soap wouldn’t bother me at all. As soon as you run water on it and turn it once in your hand, the entire outer surface is refreshed so 🤷‍♀️

I use a lot of L’Occitane stuff and take the empties back to the shop for recycling.

"This genuinely never happens to ours. It stays firm and smooth and solid until it is a tiny scrap. No mush. It just sits on a ceramic soap dish. Different soap types?"

Every soap dish I've ever had (with every soap I've tried) has been like that.

KimberleyClark · 16/08/2024 17:29

I don’t dislike soap, but it seems very difficult to get hold of soap dishes/holders/boxes for travel that are big enough for bath sized bars.

Morrisons have them and cheap too. Think they were £1.

I would prefer guests to use liquid I don't want their germs all over my soap.

As a guest I would never use someone’s bar of soap because it will have all the hosts germs on 🤢

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 16/08/2024 17:36

I’ve got a foaming soap dispenser that uses 1/4 the amount of liquid soap, so it does help reduce plastic waste.

Fizbosshoes · 16/08/2024 17:41

I started using bar soap instead of shower gel or soap a few years ago. It made much harder work of cleaning the bathroom, everywhere seemed to get scummy. Then people said that's because it was cheap soap and recommended lovely bars of soap that were about £8/bar or more that wouldnt be grimy or scummy. While it might be better for the environment, I wasn't convinced it was a cheaper option.....so I'm back to liquid soap and shower gel!

AcceptanceElephant · 16/08/2024 17:43

I have liquid soap in the kitchen and bathrooms as I have two young dc, and it’s just more hygienic and easier for them to use independently.
I do use bar soap in the shower though as I agree it gives that super clean feeling compared to shower gel.
