Bar soap is superior to liquid soap

  • feel you have it in your for hands longer and have to scrub longer to get the squeaky feeling off the skin- thus feels cleaner
  • less waste of packaging
  • less waste of product. I feel you use so much more than needed with liquid soaps and bar soap lasts an age
  • much much cheaper than liquid soap (standard bar soap vs standard liquid soap, not the fancy stuff)
  • looks pretty in a soap dish
  • can get really beautiful smelling and looking handmade bars
  • hands feel softer

I do keep liquid soap in the bathroom too (for guests to use) but I never see bars in peoples bathrooms anymore.

Yorkshire Soap Company glycerine soaps don’t crack, don’t dry out your skin and the scent lasts until the last sliver. They are my bath time treat.

Soap in the shower leaves a film, liquid body wash doesn’t, the shower is much easier to clean if you wash using body wash. Dr Bronner is pricey but lasts ages.

Love bar soap in my bathroom where it doesn’t get shared with anyone else. Mine doesn’t go slimy, mushy or cracked, and no problems with the pipes either.

Had a bottle of shower gel in a beauty box recently and it did smell lovely but I really noticed that slimy/filmy feeling. I really don’t see how ‘just water’ would get you properly clean.

We have hand wash and soap at the sink in this household. I also have a bar of soap by the kitchen sink. I use it on the most greasy pans as it works really well. Again I use laundry soap bars on stains before going in the wash. My Great Aunt never had any detergents in her house only pure soaps. She was a botanist and said they were more harmful to plants. A spray of slightly soapy water sprayed on greenfly is a great way to get better roses. But you couldn’t use washing up liquid.

I've gone back to using Shield bar soap in the shower as perimenopause has turned me back into a stinky teen done something weird to my BO, and the antibacterial ingredient is the only thing to make me feel properly clean.

I only use bar soap in my shower but have liquid soap elsewhere in the house because, living on my own, I find bar soap cracks through lack of use in the other sink. I remember when liquid soap first became a thing - we had it at work alongside the bar soap (Wrights Coal Tar!!). One day I washed my hands in liquid soap then straight afterwards in bar soap and the muck that came off my hands!! The liquid stuff hadn't cleaned them at all!

Twistybranch · 16/08/2024 08:38

Lots of bar devotees, wasn’t expecting that.

As I say, I never see it in peoples homes anymore.

I use scallop shells for my soap dishes. Keeps it try and drains the water. You can pop them in the dishwasher too.

Bar soap all the way. Even for showering. Shower gel is horrid for my skin.

I read somewhere that bar soap lasts five times longer ( liquid soap contains lots of water) and also bar soap is packaged in paper, not plastic bottles.

I agree. I swapped back to bar soap a few years ago and wouldn’t change again. But it’s increasingly hard to find in shops.

Sparklesandbeer · 16/08/2024 08:40

Yanbu. I switched to nabuksi soap and hamam glove (glove 2x a week). Amazing, no irritation, much cleaner imho

It's odd that there are threads about this so often.

UnaOfStormhold · 16/08/2024 08:41

I make our own bar soap and it's lovely - makes amazing lather and has a subtle honey scent (from honey and beeswax). It takes half an hour to make enough to last 6 months and it's very satisfying to make it and watch oils and lye transform into something solid. And it's gentle on the skin because it retains the glycerine which gets removed from most commercial bar soap. I'd never thought about visitors preferring liquid soap but I use dishes with racks and it doesn't crack so I hope they've not had a problem with it!

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 16/08/2024 08:42

i like bar soap but it blocks my plug hole, scums up the sink and goes mushy. So all needs more cleaning

I went back to using bar soap because it’s better for the environment. Glad I did because I much prefer it.

KimberleyClark · 16/08/2024 08:47

FFS your skin doesn’t need to be “squeaky clean”, it has a natural protective barrier protecting you from various environmental aggressors including bacteria and scrubbing away at it just makes you more vulnerable to damage.

What to Know About Your Skin Barrier and How to Protect It

The epidermis, especially its outermost thin layer called the stratum corneum, acts as a skin barrier and is the first line defense for your body. Here’s what you need to know.

Oh, I didn't realise this, we have to use bar soap in the touring caravan and I did think the outlet pipe from the plughole might be a bit blocked but then thought that's not possible as only soap, toothpaste and water goes down there.

Just regularly run hot water tap with soda crystals, all sorted .

menopausalmare · 16/08/2024 08:50

You're more likely to find a random pube on bar soap.

eotchs · 16/08/2024 02:15

hands never feel properly clean with bars

you also get those grimy seams of bacteria

I suspect that is scientifically inaccurate due to the action of the said soap on the bacteria. It effectively cracks it open. Doubt any survive.

PickAChew · 16/08/2024 08:52

We have both. The liquid stuff shreds my hands. DS2 (with LD) finds it much easier. To use, though.

I used to love the Camay ads when I was a kid. Do they still make Camay?

https://retrotvads.com/1980-camay-soap/

Also you used to be able to get magnetic soap holders to fit to your bathroom wall, happy days.

I always roll my eyes when I go into a downstairs loo and see a bottle of Aesop, so pretentious and overpriced.

I have magnetic soap holders and soap at all three sinks. You can get them on eBay and Alibaba. I have seven in total for different soaps (one is a hair soap bar holder in the shower).

I use the moisturising bar (soap) from tropic and I find it makes my skin much nicer. I just leave it on the basin and take it in the shower with me when I go in, otherwise it just washes away when my dh uses the shower 🙄

Have just treated myself to a l’occtaine one on holiday though so looking forward to using this.

I think I will get one of the soap dishes up thread to drain it off though because I must admit the soggy soap does put me off using it.

Havent been able to convince the rest of the family on to soap though, they’re all still on shower gel.
