Anyone else worried about M pox?

It's been in the news today. Monkey Pox or M pox is spreading they have found a case in Sweden now and hinted it could spread more.
Anyone worried or is it scare mongering.

It seems to be in the news again?😪

To the OP, no, I’m not worrying. Theres a vaccine and, listening to the news, we seem to be prepared here. Of course, there will always be those out there who will try to frighten us into believing there’s another global pandemic imminently on the way - this time M pox. Let’s put this into perspective, and not panic.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 16/08/2024 21:46

Does anyone know whether having had the smallpox vaccination confers any protection to Mpox?

Supposedly around 85% effective against.

exiledfromcornwall · 16/08/2024 21:58

Not remotely, and I will not be taking the vaccine!

Given that the World Health Organisation didn't even know about Covid until December 31st 2019, I think your memory may be deceiving you!

No, there were definitely reports about Covid around the start of December.

Mmhmmn · 16/08/2024 22:42

Nah, not yet and not expecting to.

namechangeforthisi · 16/08/2024 23:43

I feel nervous about it. It's probably already here. It may not be as contagious as Covid but it's lethal in 1 in 25 cases

The scientists are worried…

I bet they are 🤑🤑🤑

Please stop scaremongering. It’s lethal in 1 in 25 cases in severely malnourished children with multiple health problems in parts of the African continent. Potentially devastating for those nations, yes, but unlikely to be so in healthier populations in the more developed world.

CautiousLurker · 17/08/2024 01:41

Not really. Apparently if you’ve had a smallpox vaccination it will offer some protection (these stopped in 1971, but nearly 50% of the population is 53yo and older so will have had this as an infant). The vacc can be mass produced and rolled out to those under 53 very easily. It’s passed person to person from infected people, so I and my family will not be popping to tea with anyone infected. So, no, not worried about this one. The fall out from covid lockdowns means I am more afraid of government over-reaction, really.

On the 12th of December. And it was simply a "pneumonia-like illness" at that point, in an isolated part of China- certainly no suggestion it would become a global pandemic.

I am not worried , yet, but they need to move quick and stop where it started. Now is the time to send emergency vacs to affected areas.
According to some news channel can be spread with
*any close physical contact with mpox blisters or scabs (including during sexual contact, kissing, cuddling or holding hands)
*touching clothing, bedding or towels used by someone with mpox
*the coughs or sneezes of a person with mpox when they're close to you

MilkyWayAtoms · 17/08/2024 08:43

Presumably, as with other viruses, people can be infectious before showing symptoms too. So it isn't that easy to just stay away from infected people.

I really don't understand why we aren't restricting travel now. Much easier to stop it getting into the country in the first place than deal with it when it's here - that's a lesson from covid.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 17/08/2024 10:25

Thanks for that @CautiousLurker I thought I recalled them saying something like that when it was in the news a couple of years ago . I was googling it yesterday evening and I think I've probably had that vaccine as a child.

Where would you suggest restricting travel to and from @MilkyWayAtoms ? Do you mean something like people on flights from affected areas to be quarantined? Or are you suggesting something more radical?

namechangeforthisi · 15/08/2024 23:26

I don't know anyone who goes out to work now

No one?

My dad works in a factory. He goes to work.
My mum works in a school. She goes to work.
My husband works in a bakery. He goes to work.
My friend is a carer. She goes to work.
My doctor goes to work.
The bus drivers go to work.
The police go to work.
The supermarket staff still go to work.

I could go on...

There is a world outside your little bubble, strangely.

thefamous5 · 17/08/2024 10:31

@namechangeforthisi

Obviously you don't know them personally, but this comment combined with your previous one about everyone basically still being in lockdown...no. Not in the slightest.

I live in a busy tourist area and the beaches and town are packed.

Restricting travel is a massive ball ache for all concerned, that’s basically why they don’t do it at a drop of a hat. Huge knock on effects.

Anyone coming into the UK should have to quarantine. If there are cases in Sweden then there are almost certainly cases all across Europe that are yet to be reported.

Additionally, all non-essential foreign travel should be banned from this point onwards.

Mespher · 17/08/2024 10:54

Can't wait for the MPox section on here🤣🤣

I was hoping this was going to be a reasonable discussion. Never mind. Although I'm not sure whether you are serious or not - I do 'get' the user name.

During the covid lockdown there was a troll poster saying very similar things. Probably the same poster.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 17/08/2024 11:30

Yes @Beezknees I wasn't sure whether it was the same poster or someone referencing the user name as a wind up.

Ah I missed the username. Nannyandjohn wasn't it if I remember rightly!

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 17/08/2024 11:51

So the people who are already vaccinated are old people and gay men. Sounds an interesting scenario.

InWalksBarberalla · 17/08/2024 11:53

It seems reasonable to look at some level of travel restrictions from the most impacted areas - ie the DRC - testing at departute and arrivals for eg.
