To think that people shouldn't go over their bin allowance and should just do a run up to the tip instead.

Next door neighbours are retired and often are away for several weeks at a time. We currently have a 3 weekly black bin collection (2 black bin bag allowance) and weekly recycling and food waste collections with unlimited bags.

Scummy people further down the street have put bags of recycling and 4 black bin bags outside their house as they know they are away. Surely the point of limits is so that people recycle weekly and shouldn't need to have so much in their black bins at all. Tip local to us is a 10 min drive maximum.

YABU - Mind your own business and don't look out for your immediate neighbours
YANBU - Tell the bin men and report to the council as dumped waste.

Genuinely couldn't get worked up over this. People often ask/offer spare bin space on our street WhatsApp.

Thedogscollar · 15/08/2024 00:08

This wouldn't bother me. Let it go.

MooseBreath · 15/08/2024 00:09

Many people don't have cars.
People with young children will have nappies to go in black bins.
People with disabilities often have single use medical items that need to go in the black bin.
Some homes have large families, which would produce more rubbish than a couple or single person.

There are many reasons why people may exceed two bags every three weeks. Mind your own business and find something better to occupy your time.

DadJoke · 15/08/2024 00:09

It’s not your business and it’s nothing to worry about.

MrsBobtonTrent · 15/08/2024 00:09

Choose your battles. If this is your biggest issue, life is good.

LiterallyOnFire · 15/08/2024 00:10

"Just" do a run to the tip?

You know not everyone has a car or a license? Better in bins than flytipped or sitting around.

I'd find something else to worry about than other peoples refuse arrangements.

LiterallyOnFire · 15/08/2024 00:11

Refuse collections three weeks apart is pretty disgusting and a two bag limit every three weeks is asking for trouble.

JulianFawcettMP · 15/08/2024 00:13

It's totally unreasonable, I accept that without excise, but I think saying scummy people makes you sound thick

XenoBitch · 15/08/2024 00:15

YABU, you need a car to go to the tip, and believe it or not... not everyone has one!

I can't get worked up about other people's bins. It is not in my garden so I don't care.

Excuse. Hoist by my own petard

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 15/08/2024 00:15

3 weeks apart?

Bloody hell, 2 weeks here and that is pushing it

If the neighbours haven't used their bin allowance then why not?

Maybe they've even spoken to your neighbour and have an agreement to use the bin space....

That’s what I thought too, am I really reading that correctly??? I’ve never heard of a bin bag limit either.

Lovelysummerdays · 15/08/2024 00:17

I think YABU. Obviously the neighbours are arses and should of asked but I’ve worked for the council and this is an expensive pita. They can’t just take your word for it, unless you have video evidence?

So someone needs to come out to go through the bags to try and find evidence of address. Anyone with a bit of common sense doesn’t tend to leave this and without evidence nothing happens.

What is it you want to achieve a fine? For them to recycle?

Caterina99 · 15/08/2024 00:18

I think it’s a bit rude (assuming the holidaying neighbours don’t know and haven’t offered their spare bin space!), but does it make any difference to them at all?

So noone is being disadvantaged by this, and a trip to the tip has been saved? Can’t get myself worked up about it at all!

Maybe the neighbours are quite happy to have their bin capacity used as it makes it less obvious that they’ve gone away for however many weks

wwyd2021medicine · 15/08/2024 00:22

I tell my next door neighbour to fill my refuse or garden bin if I am away
The only problem with what you say is if absent neighbours get penalised for leaving too many black bags out surely?

GrandHighPoohbah · 15/08/2024 00:23

I can see where you're coming from OP, in that lots of people go over the limit because they can't be bothered with recycling, squashing boxes etc. And I agree that these people could solve the issue by paying more attention to it. But in this case, they are ensuring the rubbish is taken, which is a lot better than flytipping it or leaving it lying around their property. It's rude not to ask first, so hopefully they have.

WhycantIkeepthisbloodyplantalive · 15/08/2024 00:24

2 bin bags in 3 weeks?!

Why should they have to go to the local tip, presumably they are paying their council tax? Clearly the services they are paying for are not fit for purpose if people are finding themselves in a position where their only option is to regularly visit local disposal centres to rid themselves of general household waste.

Shawdee · 15/08/2024 00:26

2 binbags in 3 weeks, that's an absolute joke!! I'd be trying to put mine outside vacant houses too, as if we always have the time to keep running the bloody tip.

LikeWeUsedToBe · 15/08/2024 00:28

I'm with you OP. not enough people care about the planet.

Bellamari · 15/08/2024 00:28

Even if you have a car, you often don’t want to put dirty rubbish in it because it’ll wreck the car interior.

MoosakaWithFries · 15/08/2024 00:28

We have 3 weekly collections and have an elderly neighbour that lives alone and creates very little waste. Her bin goes out late evening (collected at 6am) and myself or other neighbours will add a bag or two and use her bin space.

For me to take that to the tip would mean booking online and then a 10 mile round trip in my car at the allotted time. Which is the best part of an hour of my precious day off.

We recycle as much as we can, including soft plastics. We do enough.

An unnecessary drive to the tip is far more harmful for the environment than doing a bin drop in my neighbours bin.

And if I'm on holiday they can crack on and use mine.

Topseyt123 · 15/08/2024 00:29

Not your business.

Not everyone can just drive to the dump or really wants bags of potentially stinky rubbish in their car.

Here in Essex you now have to make an appointment to get into the local dump. Yes, really. I believe too that it is a policy that was rolled out across the entire county, not just in our district. Often there are no same day appointments so you could have to wait a day or two, which wouldn't sit well with your ten minute run assumption.

If you want to complain about anything at all then complain to your local council about the two bags every three weeks limit. That's what is so ridiculous here, not your neighbours sneaking out an extra bag or two that has built up over that time

I think that council policies such as these probably contribute to the increase in fly tipping that we are currently seeing in various areas.

TheOriginalEmu · 15/08/2024 00:30

Mind your own business. Maybe they are unwell or disabled or having a hard time and caring overly about the rubbish isn’t top of their priorities at the moment.
you sound like my neighbour who came to have a go because I had two bags for plastic waste out and I shouldn’t be generating that much plastic waste. I recently had a leg amputated and I’m on chemo. I have a lot of single use plastic waste because of it. Piss off with your judgement.
