To think that people shouldn't go over their bin allowance and should just do a run up to the tip instead.

Next door neighbours are retired and often are away for several weeks at a time. We currently have a 3 weekly black bin collection (2 black bin bag allowance) and weekly recycling and food waste collections with unlimited bags.

Scummy people further down the street have put bags of recycling and 4 black bin bags outside their house as they know they are away. Surely the point of limits is so that people recycle weekly and shouldn't need to have so much in their black bins at all. Tip local to us is a 10 min drive maximum.

YABU - Mind your own business and don't look out for your immediate neighbours
YANBU - Tell the bin men and report to the council as dumped waste.

2 bin bags every 3 weeks!!! I'd be doomed! I recycle everything I can but with 2 adults half the time, 2 teens, cat litter and a geriatric dog that gets through at least 6 puppy pads daily and LOTS of kitchen roll as there's a lot of cleaning to do daily, I'd be totally screwed. Why do you assume everyone can use only TWO BLACK BAGS every 3 weeks just because you can?

Edited

We had that issue, a lot of extra waste from having cats, two elderly, and the council gave us a roll of purple bags and allowed us to put out one extra a fortnight - as it was then, we have three weekly collections now, but it's three bags (four if we put out a purple bag), rather than two when it was fortnightly.

"Just" do a run to the tip?

You know not everyone has a car or a license? Better in bins than flytipped or sitting around.

I'd find something else to worry about than other peoples refuse arrangements.

This.
Put a note on your fridge telling you to Mind your OWN Business. Then get on with life.

Topseyt123 · 15/08/2024 00:29

Not your business.

Not everyone can just drive to the dump or really wants bags of potentially stinky rubbish in their car.

Here in Essex you now have to make an appointment to get into the local dump. Yes, really. I believe too that it is a policy that was rolled out across the entire county, not just in our district. Often there are no same day appointments so you could have to wait a day or two, which wouldn't sit well with your ten minute run assumption.

If you want to complain about anything at all then complain to your local council about the two bags every three weeks limit. That's what is so ridiculous here, not your neighbours sneaking out an extra bag or two that has built up over that time

I think that council policies such as these probably contribute to the increase in fly tipping that we are currently seeing in various areas.

Yes I'm also in Essex and know about booking for tip. Also our council have given us black bins to put black bags into which are collected fortnightly and hold 2 or 3 bags max. If bin lid doesn't shut they won't take nor take any extra bags not in bin

CreativeOriginalUsername · 17/08/2024 23:29

We have one rubbish bin. Not even a black bin - it’s a 3/4 size bin. And it’s emptied once every 4 weeks. So two large refuse sacks to last a month. Been like that for 5 years.

It is fucking ridiculous.

@TheOriginalEmu

i am so sorry to hear about your leg & chemo. How are you doing now?

WTF does your neighbour think she is policing your waste??

I hope you gave her what for & made her feel bad telling her you'd rather still have your keg than using lots of plastic to cope with your amputation/chemo?!?!

i'm steaming on your behalf!

Ah thanks lovely, I’m ok. I’m pretty much healed from surgery and chemo isn’t as bad as I’d feared. My hair is coming out so that’s going to need shaving soon. The hair has upset me more than the leg weirdly!
my neighbour is a dick of a human with the empathy levels of a rock. She also is claiming my cat trod in her newly laid cement on her drive and left a footprint in it. A) there are at least 4 other people in our immediate neighbouring houses with cats, how she can tell if was mine from a paw print I’m not sure. B) it’s clearly a dog print.
crazy woman 😂

We also have to book slots in South Wales. It started during lockdown which made sense, but now it’s staying. We are allowed 3 black bags per fortnight, and the can refuse to take them if judge them as too heavy 😒

BonifaceBonanza · 18/08/2024 05:40

Everyone’s complaining about your bin bag limit but I totally understand why you are miffed.

Also it reads like you can only put out 2 bags per 3 weeks, then you say neighbour put out 4 bags, which is confusing.

Anyway if everyone else can manage then what’s this neighbour’s problem, clearly the limit isn’t the problem otherwise the street will be piled high with surplus bags.

It is actually fly tipping to put your rubbish in someone else’s bin without permission but op you just need to ignore this problem and move on.

Arrivapercy · 18/08/2024 05:43

Refuse collections three weeks apart is pretty disgusting and a two bag limit every three weeks is asking for trouble.

This.

Arrivapercy · 18/08/2024 05:52

Also to the people talking about rats, what do you put out? We have a weekly food waste collection that is in a green bin. Everything in recycling should be rinsed out and then doesn't attract rats.

Not all packaging is recyclable. In fact - recycling are very picky about paper/card packaging. If it has any traces of food on at all, eg oil staining, they won't take it for cardboard waste. Its not practical to wash cardboard and it doesnt get oil off well anyway.

I agree people should produce less waste but it can be extremely difficult and there is no doubt, 3 weekly bin collections increase the level of flies and rodents.

KimFan · 18/08/2024 05:53

This is NOT one of life’s problems.

110APiccadilly · 18/08/2024 06:16

I'd like to see councils challenged on the inherent discrimination of these restrictions to be honest. It makes life much harder for big families and people without cars (who, on average, will be poorer).

Our food waste will also take cardboard/kitchen roll with food on it as I think they compost it anyway and the papery stuff (with food on) helps that process. So things like greasy pizza boxes etc. I'm in South Wales and our local tip doesn't need booking into but I know ones in other council areas that do need it. They are nearer cities. Waste should be everyone's business though and if you get used to what goes where it's not that hard.

Maybe parents can involve their kids in it so they know about it as well. Then again, parents could also teach their kids about littering, although not if they have the attitude of 'it gives someone a job'.

*people shouldn't go over their bin allowance and should just do a run up to the tip instead *not everyone can run up to the tip. It sounds like your council is really strict so I'd expect some people to struggle to meet this limit.

RandomUsernameHere · 18/08/2024 07:45

Maybe they asked the neighbours if they could do this.

PlumpCatIsBestCat · 18/08/2024 07:56

We are having this because one of the flats in our building is empty as it's under contract and taking ages for the sale. The previous tenant had managed to get an extra set of bins (he had his out the back and the other two flats out the front).

People are filling them up over and over which is bad enough but they've dumped open food in the recycle bin.

It's disgusting and smelly and right by our car in the summer.

@TheOriginalEmu

Daft bat, tell her to get forensics out!

shame you hadn't been able to go out when it was wet & sign it 'love woof' 😂

I know it's only one person, but my friend had cancer & a lot of chemo then radio, a couple of operations. She had very thick hair. she had it cut very short when it was coming out in clumps, Mc Millan helped her with wigs & head scarves etc but it grew back very quickly. Just as thick, dark & healthy. So there's hope!

Take care & best wishes xx

We have three weekly collections, have done for about 10 years now. It's a pretty common thing.

@Titsonboard

theyre talking about going back to bags here. I hope they have a chat with the foxes first.

What's the advantages of bags opposed to wheelie bins?

AlarminglyAwful · 18/08/2024 08:19

We recycle everything that it is possible to recycle and two bags every three weeks would be physically impossible? We have a fortnightly wheelybin collection and that’s bad enough!

Clearinguptheclutter · 18/08/2024 08:25

very annoying yes but difficult to get to the tip if you dont have ready access to the car

fwiw we have only ever had a smallish black bins and fortnightly collections and even with two children in nappies never filled it.
always found the size of the recycling bins to be generous and people should just make more of an effort

MouseofCommons · 18/08/2024 08:27

To be fair they might have agreed to it.

Although, if it's anywhere like where I live, they are just scummy people. I spend my life emailing the council about idiots in this estate.

Exactly the same here
One week recycling, the next general
By the end of the second week whichever bin it is is always nearly overflowing

If we have a good clear out then there's no way it's all fitting in either bin as there's general rubbish and also boxes etc.

Luckily we can managed a tip run when that happens

There's also a big flytipping of general household waste like bin bags issue here which is blamed on the bin collection. Rubbish left next to public waste bins so it's at least near a bin to be collected but then the bags gets ripped open.

kirbykirby · 18/08/2024 09:52

Why don't you take it to the tip for them OP as you are the one that is bothered about it?

I tried to use our council's large item disposal service. It was awful and took several weeks and multiple phone calls for them to find the item, which was very clearly in my tiny front yard at the address given to them. Meanwhile the neighbours were probably judging me for having a ratty old sofa in my yard rather than "just" getting the council to collect it. Waste disposal services are often not fit for purpose now.
