To think that people shouldn't go over their bin allowance and should just do a run up to the tip instead.

Next door neighbours are retired and often are away for several weeks at a time. We currently have a 3 weekly black bin collection (2 black bin bag allowance) and weekly recycling and food waste collections with unlimited bags.

Scummy people further down the street have put bags of recycling and 4 black bin bags outside their house as they know they are away. Surely the point of limits is so that people recycle weekly and shouldn't need to have so much in their black bins at all. Tip local to us is a 10 min drive maximum.

YABU - Mind your own business and don't look out for your immediate neighbours
YANBU - Tell the bin men and report to the council as dumped waste.

What?!

We recycle as much as we can at home. But taking soft plastics to the supermarket is a hassle we can't be dealing with.

General waste can have things in that attract vermin - unwashed packaging that isn't recyclable, tissues/kitchen roll that's been used to clean spillages, items damaged by food spillages, someone tossing food into the bin without thinking, even things like sanitary towels can attract them due to the smell of blood (and can these go in the nappy bin or do you have to keep stinking, blood soaked sanitary items at home for weeks as 3 weekly collections would include at least one, if not two, period cycles)

Friendofdennis · 15/08/2024 01:30

Three weekly general waste collection is ridiculous. We have it here. It so unhygienic

chaosmaker · 15/08/2024 01:39

Sorry I was talking about this specific situation that is local to me and involves none of the issues mentioned.

That wasn't what your thread title implied at all, "people shouldn't" and "should just". It came over as generally judgy about anyone who uses more than your local, exceptionally stingy, limits.

The wording "just do a run to the tip" really doesn't show any consideration for people for who that would be a real pain either. OK so you "clarified" (i.e. drip fed) some other info about your local set up later down the line, but only in response to other poster's comments.

So maybe think about either a) giving all the relevant details (local tip doesn't need appointments and is available when most of us plebs don't have to be in work, "scummy" people have a car, your council has special bins for nappy/medical waste etc) or b) being a little less generalised in the thread title - no wonder loads of people have jumped on this!

In my case, "just" running to the tip means a) booking well in advance IF I can get a Saturday slot, and b) causing myself plenty of pain as lugging bags into the car, then out again at the other end wouldn't be appreciated by my back. And due to this, I have virtually all my household shopping delivered so don't go to the supermarket very often (where I've not seen a "soft plastics recycling" place).

You come over as very insular in your view of how people live - learn to look outside your cosy little bubble before commenting on how others behave!

Yes I'm being a bit ratty, and it's 2am, but I'm awake because my back is screaming at me and I can't sleep. I need to be up in 4 hours, and reading your OP made me think how much worse it would be if I had to "just run to the tip" every couple of weeks.

Catza · 15/08/2024 08:19

We recycle everything we can but we struggle with fortnightly bin collection. I don't think we'd be able to cope with just two bin bags every 3 weeks. Our bin fits three bags and we have it full with another bag already on the go by week 2.
Not a problem on weeks I live alone as I barely fill up half a kitchen bin a week. But there are 4 of us in the house (3 adults and a teen) and a lot of the food packaging is not recyclable anyway.
We take larger items and garden waste to the tip but for many years I was not driving so there wouldn't be any way for me to take my rubbish to the tip.

Longsight2019 · 15/08/2024 08:23

As a household with three young kids we generate a lot of non recyclable waste. My neighbour across the street allows me to use his available bin space with no issues and for that I’m grateful. The refuse situation in any areas is diabolical and given the rates we pay we should do all we can as a community to ensure we utilise the services.

Universalsnail · 15/08/2024 08:24

I can't drive so I can't do a tip run. Sometimes I pop a bag in neighbours bins if there is space once they've put them out. Tbh aslong as all the rubbish gets taken I don't know why you would complain.

Putthefanon · 15/08/2024 08:26

I honestly could not care less what my neighbours have in their bins. Do they even have bins? The only bins I pay any attention to are my own.

CheeseWisely · 15/08/2024 08:27

YANBU - Tell the bin men and report to the council as dumped waste.

With kindness OP, get a hobby.

Unless the reason for your extraordinary level of interest in this is because you had designs on their empty bins for yourself and are pissed off that someone beat you to it?

Sleephound · 15/08/2024 08:28

We don't have black bags, but a small black wheely bin for general waste. Most weeks it's more than adequate, my parents barely use theirs at all, but if one of us is having a clear out, we'll use the other's bin space rather than go to the tip. The bin men are coming anyway, it's probably more efficient and less costly for the council, as well as for us, to do it that way.

The extra bag people probably agreed it with your neighbours before they went away. Some neighbours are actually nice to each other, rather than looking for fault.

Jarstastic · 15/08/2024 09:32

“Scummy people”
for wanting to get rid of rubbish? (What if they couldn’t get to the tip and had their shed or garage full of rubbish or things in their garden?! Goodness knows what you’d call them then)

thank heavens we don’t have limits.
3-weekly collections is what I’d be more likely to call scummy. I think I’d organise private collections, or move.

Blackcats7 · 15/08/2024 09:44

I have never come across Bin Police before.

Peonies12 · 15/08/2024 09:44

I can't believe how much rubbish some households have. We have one small bin bag a week, if that. People should have to pay based on their amount of waste, it needs to be incentivized.

gamerchick · 15/08/2024 09:58

chaosmaker · 15/08/2024 01:09

Also to the people talking about rats, what do you put out? We have a weekly food waste collection that is in a green bin. Everything in recycling should be rinsed out and then doesn't attract rats.

seriously dude.

You're assuming everyone is the same. We don't get food waste collections. Recycling is every 2 weeks, so is the main waste. Well it was, bin men have been striking on and off since Christmas. Skip runs have to be booked and then it's certain days going on your reg plate. That's if you have a car

2 bags every 3 weeks is a joke. Giving a shit what your neighbours are doing is a bit glum man. Why don't you do them a kindness and take their rubbish to the tip if it's so convenient.

Tmpnmc86 · 15/08/2024 10:26

Maybe the 'scummy' people are avoiding the emissions from an extra car trip. Assuming they have one and can 'just' pop to the tip.

Theweepywillow · 15/08/2024 10:29

How is 9t looking out for your neighbours 😂

chaosmaker · 15/08/2024 01:39

No. You were assuming that everyone has to follow the same systems as you and that MN as a whole would agree with your judgemental "scummy" comment.

Now that it (the obvious) has been pointed out to you that refuse collection varies everywhere and that you were therefore implying that most of us are scummy, you are trying to backpedal.

Do you really have nothing better to do than curtain twitch to count how many rubbish bags your neighbours have put out?

123456abcdef · 15/08/2024 10:51

I understand why there are limits because it does encourage recycling but the 3 weeks is excessive and it's very arbitrary because it's 2 bags per house. Easy if you are a couple but harder if you've got a 5 people in your family and a couple of pets.

no you shouldn't put your rubbish out in front of someone else's house without asking.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 15/08/2024 10:52

Depends whether the provision is sensible or not. For example (when my DDs are at Uni) we have the same size black bin provision for two adults that our neighbours have for a household of five adults and two children, which is ridiculous.

toomuchfaff · 15/08/2024 11:43

So the scummy neighbours have just fly tipped a load rubbish outside elderly neighbours house that won't even get collected because it's not in a bin, and everyone telling you to mind your business... glad I don't live in their neighbourhood.

Yes you're right to think the neighbours are scum and right to try to protect the vulnerable elderly neighbours and right to report to try to solve the problem before it becomes an issue.

Headinthesand21 · 16/08/2024 12:52

You are being unreasonable
At least it’s saved a trip to the tip
I think you have too much time on your hands TBH

SunnyHedgehog · 16/08/2024 13:27

You're being unreasonable, sometimes I see that people have put bin bags in my wheelie bin (once I've already put it out for collection the next day). It's affecting no-one adversely, the refuse is already due to be collected so surely it's a non-issue?

1offnamechange · 16/08/2024 13:38

If it was 2 bags I'd say you were unreasonable because what difference does it make? The neighbours on holiday aren't using their 2 bag allowance so why shouldn't someone else.

however as they've put 4 bags out then it depends what will happen to the 2 extra ones. If your on-holiday neighbours will get fined for putting extra bags out or they'll just sit in the street for 3 weeks starting to stink then yes, either report to council or just stick them back by the owners door.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 16/08/2024 13:43

They don't have bins, the bin bags are collected from what I understand

1offnamechange · 16/08/2024 13:45

But as pps have said there is a wider issue in that a 2 bag limit once every 3 weeks is too small for lots of households (albeit not uncommon in more and more councils) and will lead to flytipping etc.
