To think these domestic things make sense and I’m not being lazy?

There are various things that I do at home that just make sense to me and I can’t understand on a domestic level why anyone would put themselves out further? This has come up in a conversation with friends who found it hilarious and ridiculous that I do this. I can see the funny side (sort of!) but surely others do this too?

Carrots… I just snap the ends off by hand and put them in the pan rather than chopping with a knife. Why use a knife when you can snap it off?! Same for other veg where it works.

The dishwasher… why empty and put in cupboards? With the exception of mugs, I never ever empty the dishwasher as I just take what is needed then when it’s dirty put it back ready for the next wash?

Clothes… hang them on the two clothes airers and never put them away. I don’t have loads of clothes so that probably helps but literally why put them away?! They are in the spare room perfectly accessible once dry.

There’s other things but this is the general idea. I just don’t get why you would make more work for yourself? Surely others do the same?!

@Apileofballyhoo surely you just end up with crumbs everywhere if you don't use a plate?

dellay · 13/08/2024 19:25

@ReadWithScepticism yes just cook them whole! Why chop them up? You can do that on your plate?

I don’t have a dishwasher and don’t have space to keep my clothes on a dryer the whole time so can’t relate to that. I like to wash and put things away so things are clean and tidy.

The carrots, I can relate to and improve upon. When I was single I used to eat a lot of raw and minimally prepared food as it seemed a lot easier to simply eat raw carrots, beetroot, cheese, nuts etc straight from the fridge than chop it all up to make elaborate meals with. Raw veg is more nutritious too. I cooked too but enjoyed those minimal meals when I had them. My bf now likes to always have proper meals which I find a bit stressful as it’s a lot of work to do this everyday.

RawBloomers · 13/08/2024 21:46

If I lived alone I might follow your dishwasher habit, but I wouldn't use anywhere near enough stuff to stick it on everyday so would have to see how that went. Top shelf stuff dripping onto bottom shelf would be my main issue.

I wouldn't do the clothes thing because I like my clothes in my bedroom for getting dressed and wouldn't want to see a clothes horse out all the time. If my bedroom was right next to a utility room, or I had a walk in wardrobe with good ventilation, I might. Makes a lot of sense to me.

The carrot thing I do unless I'm already chopping other veg. If the knife and board are out, I find cutting faster.

Bunnycat101 · 13/08/2024 21:48

I’m a bit slovenly in the housework department but the dishwasher thing really is grim and you shouldn’t be mixing the dirty and clean.

If it’s only you and your daughter I can see why the drying rack for clothes might work so that wouldn’t bother me other than it just being in the way all the time. The carrot thing I can’t work out as I’ve never snapped a raw carrot nearly at the end- I’ve snapped a very long one in half but they’re normally so hard I can’t work out how you’d just snap a few cms off one.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 13/08/2024 21:50

Where do the dry clothes go when you need to dry the next load of washing?

Greenbananasoup · 13/08/2024 21:54

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 13/08/2024 20:56

There’s four people in my house and it goes on every other day/ every three days.

Dishes/pans etc are scraped off and dunked in water and then put in. Once it’s full, it goes on. Once it’s dry, it’s emptied

I’d never manage that, mine is like the washing machine- if it doesn’t go on every day there’s dishes (and laundry) everywhere!

Jhun · 13/08/2024 21:55

Well I imagine in this ideal world you gradually move from clean to dirty, the dirty gets full, goes on and becomes clean. The one that was for cleans is now for dirties . Hopefully the whole washing up eco system is in perfect balance. I haven’t done the maths mind!

NonsuchCastle · 13/08/2024 21:55

Absolutely nothing wrong with what you're doing.

Sunshineandpool · 13/08/2024 21:56

Catza · 13/08/2024 19:43

hm.. there are probably many things I don't do because of "what's the point" argument but nothing on your list, I'm afraid. Carrots are notoriously time-consuming to cook. As my French friend used to say "if you want a quick dinner, take time to chop your carrots". I am not sure if this is a French saying but she is not wrong.
I don't have a dishwasher but if I did, I don't think I would take your approach. Seems more time-consuming to me.
And I don't like visual clutter so clothes are being put away, albeit it may take me some time to "build up" to it. Not my favourite job.
Things I do do, which I am sure many will find equally horrifying - I get out a knife in the morning to do my breakfast and this knife lives on my chopping board and is being used throughout the day for all other cooking without washing.
I don't rinse my tea cups. I use the same cup for the whole day and then wash it up the following morning and start again.
I don't iron my bedsheets.
I don't flush the toilet at night (if it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown - flush it down). This is mostly because of sensory issues.
I think this is probably as far as my horrifying habits go.

Edited

I do the same with my tea mug. I use the same one for the day then it goes in the dishwasher at night.

GoldenLegend · 13/08/2024 21:57

I think of myself as lazy and a bit of a slob but on days when I've done a lot of cleaning I like the way everything looks, shiny, tidy, smells nice. You must waste a lot of carrot by snapping the ends off and if I dried my clothes indoors on an airer they'd smell musty and so would the room.

Hippomumma · 13/08/2024 21:57

The dishwasher thing is so weird. I cooked fresh chicken tonight and the thought of putting the knife I used in with clean utensils makes me feel a bit ill….

MistyGreenAndBlue · 13/08/2024 22:00

I'm going to channel my dear old gran (rest her soul) and just say: don't be such an idle bugger! 😂

Also, I don't believe the carrot thing at all - which does call into question the veracity of the entire post tbh.

Snapping carrots like that? Wow. Can you rip a telephone book in half?

lalaloopyhead · 13/08/2024 22:04

heymammy · 13/08/2024 21:23

I don't do any of your examples op but I do get weird looks in the supermarket when, instead of taking each item out of my basket and placing it on the conveyor belt, I just gently (and carefully) tip the basket contents onto the belt all at once.

What?? 🤣🤣 I think I'm going to try this just to see what happens....

NonsuchCastle · 13/08/2024 22:04

twojumps · 13/08/2024 19:38

It's called having standards!

You could apply your logic to anything if your standards can go that low.

Don't flush the toilet, do it once at the end of the day. I mean, really?

Be careful not to keep sliding into living with little care.

She has said nothing about the toilet, so don't jump to conclusions.

She is clean - she uses her dishwasher and she cleans her clothes.

Madamecholetsbonnet · 13/08/2024 22:05

It sounds incredibly wasteful to me. Wasting food, wasting water and wasting energy.

If you used the dishwasher normally you wouldn’t have to run it every night. And having clean and dirty stuff in together then using the “clean” stuff that’s been dripped on is vile

LoveBluey · 13/08/2024 22:06

I'm all for the easy approach but these actually sound harder work to me.
Carrots couldn't bend them by hand, easier to chop.

Dishwasher - dirty drips on to clean plates. No thank you.

I do know someone with 2 dishwashers - one clean, one dirty which seems a good idea if you have space.

Clothes - I do sometimes have a pile of clean clothes taken off the washing line on top of the ottoman and don't always get round to putting them away but wouldn't like leaving them on the airer/line. I don't bother ironing.

tolerable · 13/08/2024 22:06

seriously..its your house.do what suits you.
no right wrong. clean ,fed= all good
asking gony cause sniders tho.

MassiveOvaryaction · 13/08/2024 22:07

Two dishwashers is the answer imo. Had it in a work kitchen/common room once, laminated notice for clean or dirty. Take something out of the clean one, use it then put in the dirty one. Obvs notices swapped over once dirty one had been filled up/put on.

Carrot thing is weird but your dishwasher thing is unsanitary imo.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 13/08/2024 22:09

Yes that is lazy and I say that as someone who is pretty lazy themselves 😂

melmos · 13/08/2024 22:09

This has really made me laugh - cheers op and the Popeye commentator

And yes these are lazy and also weird, it's like those met Dan videos of ' life hacks' that aren't helpful or needed - brilliant

MassiveOvaryaction · 13/08/2024 22:10

dellay · 13/08/2024 19:25

@ReadWithScepticism yes just cook them whole! Why chop them up? You can do that on your plate?

I mean if you're doing this, why bother expending the energy snapping the end off? Just cut it off when it's on your plate 🤷🏼‍♀️

Nanny0gg · 13/08/2024 22:11

dellay · 13/08/2024 19:20

I’m so surprised other people don’t do these things 🤦🏼‍♀️

Well I have never ever heard of anyone doing what you do.

Ever

steff13 · 13/08/2024 22:12

I mostly only cook carrots in soup. I don't think people would like to spoon a whole carrot out of their bowl of soup.

As an aside, is anyone else getting this "bent carrot" ad? Well played, MN.

To think these domestic things make sense and I’m not being lazy?
